CNN —A decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials was met with anger and annoyance at Jerusalem’s bustling Mahane Yehuda Market. Gil Siegal, a legal scholar at the Ono Academic College in Israel, said The Hague-based court’s decision has united Israelis. Most Israelis still support the war in Gaza, he said, seeing it as a just fight and the only means to keep their country safe. The ICC “is saying that Gallant and Netanyahu are equal to Mohammed Deif… this is something that Israelis truly cannot comprehend, truly, truly cannot comprehend,” Siegal said. “Israel’s war machine does not only destroy Gaza but also hurts Israelis – in body and in spirit,” he told CNN.

I'm a Yale student, and I just toured Oxford for the first time while studying abroad. I loved the old-school feel on campus and can see myself being a grad student at Oxford one day. When I first toured Yale, it felt like I encountered the sublime for the first time. However, over the summer, while studying abroad in London, I had the opportunity to spend a day wandering around the streets of Oxford and Oxford University. The city leans toward this impression; many shops play into the medieval university feel, which I loved.

Karnal, India CNN —The sun blisters the arid ground in Karnal, a district in India’s northern Haryana state, where empty houses stand testament to an acute problem that’s driving some residents to take unimaginable risks. Ankit Chaudhary says he paid an agent to help him take the 'donkey route' into the US but lost his money. His account matched that of another smuggling agent CNN spoke to in Haryana. But even if Trump wins the November election, smugglers CNN spoke to in India predict an eventual revival of the “donkey” route. “In my opinion the donkey route will never completely stop,” said the first agent.

The alleys are cast in permanent semidarkness, covered by black nylon tarpaulins to hide the Palestinian fighters there from Israeli drones overhead. This is not Gaza or a traditional Hamas stronghold. It is a refugee camp in Tulkarm, a town in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where the relatively moderate Palestinian faction of Fatah had long held sway. One of Israel’s most wanted men, he and other fighters like him say they have switched allegiances from the relatively moderate Fatah faction, which dominates the Israeli-occupied West Bank, to more radical groups like Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Other video footage showed people running for cover as a powerful airstrike exploded near them. Many of those killed were women and children, the hospital officials said. Israel’s military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, estimated the number of casualties to be under 100, without specifying whether these were dead or wounded or both. Hours later some of the dead had already been buried by their families while others had yet to be claimed, according to Dr. Daqran. “The Apache started to bomb and fire directly at people,” he said, according to Reuters, adding that there were many dead and injured.

The measure, which is expected to take effect in October, will see drinking alcohol forbidden on streets or public places in Shibuya from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day. Shibuya City, which is a self-governed district within Tokyo, can make its own local regulations. Last fall, Shibuya banned Halloween-related activities in the district, with alcohol cited as a main reason behind the prohibition. That included a ban on drinking alcohol outside of bars and restaurants. Local Gion residents have also taken some measures themselves, such as blocking off private alleys.

More Americans are moving to Tuscany, a part of Italy known for medieval walled cities and wine. Some locals say it's keeping their economy alive, but others are starting to grumble. The influx of Americans, locals said, can be at once a booster of fortunes and an irritating imposition. SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean prosecutors have indicted the head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, charging him with contributing through negligence to the Halloween crowd crush in Seoul in 2022 that killed nearly 160 people, according to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors Office. The indictment of Seoul police chief Kim Kwang-ho came more than a year after the crowd crush in October 2022, which killed 159 people on a Halloween weekend in the entertainment district of Itaewon in capital Seoul. Kim is the highest-ranking police official charged in connection with the crowd crush. In January last year, a special investigation team referred Kim and 22 other police, rescue and district office officials to the prosecution on charges related to the government's inadequate response to the stampede. Israel-Hamas war: Four-day truce agreed, 50 hostages to go free
  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Hamas and allied groups captured around 240 hostages when Islamist gunmen rampaged through southern Israeli towns on Oct. 7. Beyond that, the truce could be extended day by day as long as an additional 10 hostages were freed per day. Hamas said the initial 50 hostages would be released in exchange for 150 Palestinian women and children imprisoned in Israel. The truce deal is a first small step towards peace in the most violent ruction of the 75-year-old Palestinian-Israeli conflict. To destroy Hamas, return all our hostages and ensure that no entity in Gaza can threaten Israel," Netanyahu said in a recorded message.

In Shenzhen, a metropolis born of China’s economic prosperity, Paibang Village is a reminder of the city’s modest past and the challenges ahead for reviving the country’s property sector. Paibang is what China calls an urban village, a labyrinth of low-slung apartment buildings and mom-and-pop storefronts connected by a maze of alleyways and narrow roads. There are hundreds of them in Shenzhen, a municipality of 18 million people next to Hong Kong, and thousands of such villages across China. Now with China mired in an unyielding property crisis, policymakers want to revamp aging urban neighborhoods like Paibang to kick-start construction and spur local economies. Seven years ago, Paibang was chosen for an “urban renewal” by city officials, and in 2019 China Evergrande, one of the country’s biggest real estate firms, took control of the project.

GAZA, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The Israeli air strike hit Mohammed Hamdan's Gaza home soon after Islam's evening prayer on Tuesday, he said, killing 35 members of his extended family across three generations from Kamal, aged 70, to Rasmi, aged seven. The Hamdan family is one of many in Gaza eviscerated by an unprecedented air and artillery bombardment that has killed more than 10,000 people according to health authorities in the tiny, crowded, Hamas-run enclave. Israel Defense Forces | ReutersIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned his country that a "long and difficult war" lay ahead. The Israeli Defense Forces, after launching the largest military mobilization of troops in its history, has now entered into the "second phase" of its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Civilians try to reach survivors, dead bodies amid destruction caused by Israeli strikes on Bureij refugee camp located in central Gaza Strip on November 02, 2023. A ground offensive is necessary to achieve Israel's goal of eliminating Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, the IDF says. A prolonged invasion, however — should it become that — will be bloody and costly not only for those living in Gaza but for the Israeli military as well, military veterans and analysts say.

Step back far enough, and you can see exactly what is driving so much geopolitics today: Ukraine is trying to join the West. Or they would have agreed to Lend-Lease assistance for the allies only if President Franklin Roosevelt would eliminate the I.R.S. That’s why today America must help Israel and Ukraine to blunt the Russia-Iran axis in their theaters. But the morning after their wars, Israel and Ukraine are going to have to face some very hard choices. Because while we may write big checks to both today, they will not be blank checks.

Tourists visiting the Sacré-Coeur Basilica, the magnificent snow-white cathedral towering over northern Paris, tend to descend the Butte Montmartre the way they came up. But once they’ve had enough, they’ll most likely make their way down the south side of the hill, following the path of the funicular toward the recognizable sights of central Paris. This Paris exists mostly outside the gaze of tourists, the whopping 12.7 million people who visited the area this summer. But they refuse to abide by the half-theme-park, half-museum ambience that prevails in much of central Paris. Here, another Paris is alive and kicking.

CNN —Hye Minyi can still vividly recall what happened in Itaewon, South Korea, on the night of October 29, 2022. Whether the disaster in Itaewon last year will put a dent in this growing popularity is yet to be seen. “We are extremely concerned that there could be a repeat of the Itaewon tragedy,” said Shibuya mayor Ken Hasebe. The Itaewon crowd crush was South Korea’s worst peacetime disaster since the sinking of a ferry in 2014 killed 304 people – among them 250 students and teachers from the Danwon State High School. Lee is certain of one thing, however – that she is “never going back to the area again.”“For me, Halloween and the Itaewon tragedy are (inextricably) linked,” she said.
