But after an agonizing Achilles injury that resulted in numerous surgeries, bolts in his foot and two years off climbing, Caldwell, then in his 40s, was worried about his future. Caldwell explains that the cycling portion of the trip helped with his rehabilitation and contributed to the adventure. A man died after trying to parachute off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on Thursday, officials said. The man tried a BASE jump around 7:30 a.m. from Yavapai Point in Grand Canyon National Park, and his body was found around 500 feet below the South Rim along with a deployed parachute, park officials said. The wildfire shut down the main highway to Yosemite National Park as red flag fire warnings and high temperatures continue throughout the state. Wildfires are blazing across western U.S. and Canada, prompting thousands to evacuate, shutting down highways and fouling the air quality over several states. In the U.S., wildfires are raging in Oregon, California and Washington, illuminating skies with bright orange flames and haze. In California, the Apache fire sparked Tuesday evening near Highway 33 and Apache Canyon Road in Ventura County in the Los Padres National Forest. The blaze, estimated to be 250 acres, led the county to order evacuations for residences on Apache Canyon Road, local fire officials said.

Nikolau was the first major female rooftopper and caught the eye of Beerkus, who was looking to partner for social media content. In 2022, when Beerkus and Nikolau made their plans, the “supertall” skyscraper had topped out but was still under construction. With the urban “sport” emerging as one more of the more extreme ways to get likes on social media, several harrowing deaths have followed. "We've been to Yosemite a couple of times, and there are areas where you're sitting in traffic literally in a national park for an extra 45 minutes." About 41% of the total cost of attending all national parks came from traveling to Alaska, Hawaii, and other American territories. A professional rock climber who repeatedly sexually assaulted a woman during a weekend trip to Yosemite National Park in 2016 was sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison, prosecutors said. Mr. Barrett “used his status as a prominent climber to assault women in the rock-climbing community,” Mr. Talbert said. Three other women testified that he had sexually assaulted them, though their cases were not federally charged because they fell out of the prosecutors’ jurisdiction. “Barrett’s long history of sexual violence supports the imposition of a life sentence,” Mr. Talbert said. Timothy Patrick Hennessy and David A. Torres, the lawyers for Mr. Barrett, said in a joint statement on Tuesday: “We believe that imposition of a life sentence was excessive.

Several park visitors were swept off the bridge to their deaths in recent years during periods of high water. The crew members were among thousands of mostly youthful workers who labor to maintain the trails that thread through America’s public lands. The National Park Service recorded 325.5 million visits to its parks last year, up 4 percent over the previous year and the second busiest year on record. But the 236,000 miles of trails that wend their way through the parks, forests and deserts are often neglected and are certainly undervalued. That poses dangers to hikers and impedes access to the wonders that can be found on public lands.

I've visited nearly every US national park and love hiking. However, many national parks can be enjoyed without hiking. In fact, the National Park Service saw over 325 million visits in 2023 — the highest visitation since 2017. Although most national parks offer a variety of activities, some are definitely more hiker-friendly than others. As someone who's been to almost every US national park, I've found that many have incredible hiking opportunities as well as some of the best views from viewpoints or parking lots.

In central Chile, not far from where the Andes Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, a vast swath of pristine wilderness is changing hands under the most unusual circumstances. Roberto Hagemann, a Chilean businessman who owns the 325,000-acre property, has agreed to sell the land to his longtime adversaries, a band of upstart environmentalists who spent years thwarting his efforts to develop the property. It is a landmark transaction that will preserve some of the most ecologically significant territory in South America. The deal is also a case study in modern-day conservation. At a moment when ecologically sensitive lands are under threat around the globe, it takes a unique confluence of legal, financial and political resources — plus a bit of luck — to protect them from relentless development.

Interest in high-end camping has remained strong since its boom during the COVID-19 pandemic. No word yet on whether it will include the high-end hotel brand's 12 other luxury camping resorts. But the addition of these glamping resorts to its booking channels isn't Hyatt's first venture into glamping. National Park Week runs for nine days, from April 20 to April 28. The National Park Service oversees 429 park sites in the U.S. Of them, 63 are national parks. While still a small minority, campers are more likely to own an electric vehicle than those who don’t go camping, according to a survey by Kampgrounds of America, the nation’s largest campground operator. Only about 1% of Americans currently have an electric vehicle, according to KOA, but about 4% of regular campers do. “We’ve had customers cross coasts, all the way up to Canada, all the way across Canada and back down, all with an electric vehicle,” said Bowlus CEO Geneva Long. I don’t know what time it was when my husband at the time, the rock climber Tommy Caldwell, finally scrambled over the summit. He had just completed the second free ascent of the Direct Route on the northwest face of Half Dome, a 2,000-foot climb in Yosemite National Park. The climber Todd Skinner spent 61 days in 1993 working to establish the Direct Route, then considered the most difficult big wall climb in the world, before reaching the top.
