AdvertisementHigh tariffs on China could prevent the US defense industry from getting needed supplies, a Beijing advisor said. "If those military enterprises do not have supply from China, they will not be able to continue with their production." The US defense sector will face big repercussions if Donald Trump launches tariffs against China, an advisor tied to Beijing's government said. AdvertisementTo be sure, it remains to be seen how Trump's tariff ideas actually pan out. So far, the defense sector appears distracted by other developments tied to Trump's presidency.

BEIJING — China on Monday reported its consumer price index rose by 0.6% year on year in August, missing expectations as transportation and home goods prices, as well as rents declined. Food prices climbed by 2.8% year on year in August, the first positive print since June 2023, according to Wind Information data. Pork prices surged by 16.1% in August, while vegetable prices climbed by 21.8%. Pork, a food staple in China, has an outsized weighting in the country's consumer price index. Core-CPI, which strips out food and energy prices, climbed by 0.3% in August from a year ago, a slower rise for a second-straight month.

While it might look like the stuff of nightmares, this tiny robot covered in living skin could mark a step forward in the quest to make robots more human-like. It’s the work of researchers in Japan, who say they have discovered a new way to bind living skin tissue to a mechanical robotic surface. Previously, he developed a “living” robot skin — using collagen, a fibrous protein in human skin, and human dermal fibroblasts, the main cell type in connective tissue — that could be applied to a robotic finger and bend without breaking. The new method uses V-shaped holes on the robot's surface to attach the living skin securely. However, ensuring the consistency and quality of the living skin might not be so easy, says Takeuchi.

BANGKOK (AP) — A Nasdaq-listed Chinese technology company that makes parts for self-driving vehicles is threatening to sue the U.S. government after it was included in a list of companies the Pentagon says have links to the Chinese military. It was among 17 companies the U.S. Department of Defense recently added to its list of companies it considers “Chinese military companies.”The revised list also includes Megvii, a Beijing-based artificial intelligence company and IDG Capital, a major private equity investment company with holdings in many Chinese technology companies, and major Chinese energy, telecoms and aviation companies. In a statement issued last week, the company said its LiDARs were not designed to conform to military specifications. Under Biden, the U.S. has further limited China’s access to advanced U.S. technology, limited U.S. investments in strategically sensitive Chinese industries and expanded sanctions on leading Chinese companies like Huawei Technologies. The Defense Department periodically updates its list of now nearly four dozen Chinese military companies to counter links between Chinese military and companies and other entities that it says appear to be civilian.

Some Chinese factories, saddled with overcapacity in a struggling economy, are trying to export their way out of trouble and stoking new trade tensions in the process. Makers of electric vehicles, solar panels and other products are cutting prices and trying harder to muscle into overseas markets as they face weakened demand at home, upsetting competitors who see threats to their bottom lines.
Weak inflation was mainly driven by a steeper decline in food prices. Photo: Raul Ariano/Bloomberg NewsHONG KONG—China slipped back into deflation in October after a brief reprieve, highlighting how hard it is for Beijing to reinvigorate domestic demand in the world’s second-largest economy. In contrast to the U.S. and many advanced economies where taming inflation remains a high priority for central banks, China has struggled to revive inflation through most parts of the year—the latest evidence that a string of stimulus measures so far have failed to boost consumer confidence in the midst of a drawn-out property downturn.

A record number of Chinese college students graduated this summer, but landing their dream job may be a long shot. WSJ takes a look at why China’s youth unemployment is at all-time highs. Photo illustration: Adam AdadaChina ramped up efforts to stimulate its beleaguered economy, issuing additional sovereign bonds and raising its budget-deficit target, the first time it revised its budget outside the regular legislative session in more than a decade. The country’s top legislative body approved on Tuesday a plan to raise 1 trillion yuan, equivalent to around $137 billion, in additional sovereign debt, half for use before the end of this year and half for next year, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Policy makers said the bond issuance was intended for infrastructure projects in the wake of severe flooding and other natural disasters, Xinhua reported.

Huawei's Ascend AI chips are comparable to Nvidia's in terms of raw computing power, analysts and some AI firms such as China's iFlyTek (002230.SZ) say, but they still lag behind in performance. "This U.S. move, in my opinion, is actually giving Huawei's Ascend chips a huge gift," Jiang said in a post on his social media Weibo account. Huawei and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Huawei's partners in China so far include iFlyTek, a leading Chinese AI software company which is using the Ascend 910 to train its AI models. Other partners include state-owned software firms Tsinghua Tongfang and Digital China.
