That’s the premise behind global listing guide Time Out’s latest roundup of the “world’s coolest” neighborhoods. “Our bookshop is 19 years old and we have seen the neighborhood change a lot and that’s so great,” owner Nadia Champesme told CNN Travel. “This is the neighborhood where everything happens,” Dijon told CNN Travel, adding the cultural diversity of Notre-Dame Du Mont helps make it special. LONDON — Princess Kate has made her first public appearance since announcing that she had completed chemotherapy and would be returning to some public duties. Joined by her husband, Prince William, she was seen attending a Sunday service at Crathie Kirk, a church near the family's royal Balmoral estate in Scotland. In early September, Kate released a deeply personal video message saying she had completed treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer that was detected after abdominal surgery earlier in the year. Kate had already appeared in public since she revealed she was undergoing cancer treatment in March, including at Trooping the Colour, an annual military parade to celebrate the birthday of the British monarch. He has also returned to public duties after temporarily stopping most of his engagements following the diagnosis.

A California firefighter was arrested on suspicion of arson in a series of small fires that burned in wine country in recent weeks, officials said Friday. Robert Hernandez, 38, was accused of setting five fires between Aug. 15 and Sept. 14 while off-duty, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said in a news release. Hernadez, a Cal Fire apparatus engineer, allegedly ignited the blazes around Geyserville, Healdsburg and Windsor, the department said. More than 4 million acres burned across the state in 2020, setting a record for the largest number of acres burned in California in modern times, the department said. So far this year, nearly one million acres have burned, including fast-moving blazes in Southern California that threatened tens of thousands of homes and prompted thousands of evacuations in the foothills of San Bernardino County.

A 60-year-old woman received third-degree burns while walking in a thermal area in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming this week, according to park officials. Visitors are urged to practice “extreme caution” in hydrothermal areas by staying on boardwalks and trails. Pets are prohibited on boardwalk and hiking trails in the backcountry and in thermal areas, according to the park service. And in March, actor Pierce Brosnan, best known for playing James Bond, was fined after he posted photos of himself standing on off-limits thermal areas of Yellowstone in the previous year. In August 2023, a Michigan man was charged with two federal misdemeanors after he burned himself in one of Yellowstone’s thermal areas, federal prosecutors said.

Officials in North Carolina are searching for an inmate convicted of killing a 1-year-old girl after he escaped while being taken to a medical facility Tuesday in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Alston was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018 and sentenced to life behind bars, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. The department said in a statement that Alston arrived about 7 a.m. Tuesday in a prison transport van to the University of North Carolina Medical Center's gastroenterology unit, where he had a medical appointment. Keith Acree, communications director for the Department of Adult Correction, told NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh that Alston was wearing a waist chain and handcuffs when he fled. CNN —One of the largest ever collections of Princess Diana’s possessions to hit the market smashed estimates and sold for a total of $5.5 million, alongside other royal memorabilia, Los Angeles auction house Julien’s Auctions announced. Composed of more than 50 items, the collection featured several of Diana’s evening gowns, suits, shoes, hats and handbags, as well as personal letters and photographs. Its designer, Victor Edelstein, also created the famous off-the-shoulder, midnight blue velvet evening gown Diana wore while dancing with John Travolta at the White House.
