New York CNN —The longest US auto strike this century is over after a pretty clear win for the United Auto Workers union at all three unionized automakers. “I don’t like what I’ve seen in my work career with the UAW leadership, where they were too damn close to the companies,” UAW President Shawn Fain told CNN earlier this month. The three contracts, if approved by 146,000 union members, would dramatically raise pay for autoworkers, with increases and cost-of-living adjustments that would translate into a 33% wage gain. Top assembly plant workers would earn roughly $42 per hour when the contracts expire in April of 2028. Several smaller facilities were still voting, many of them parts warehouses or component factories where workers got big pay raises and were expected to approve the contract. Full-time temporary workers liked the large raises they received and the chance to get top union pay, he said. In the deals with all three companies, longtime workers would get 25% general raises over the life of the contracts with 11% up front.

DETROIT (AP) — Voting on a tentative contract agreement between General Motors and the United Auto Workers union that ended a six-week strike against the company appears too close to call after the latest tallies at several GM factories were announced Wednesday. However a factory in Arlington, Texas, with about 5,000 workers voted more than 60% to approve the deal in tallies announced Wednesday. In most cases the vote tallies ranged from 55% to around 60% against the contract. But in Arlington, production workers voted 60.4% in favor and nearly 65% of skilled trades workers approved the deal, making the tally tight. The union's vote tracker shows that 79.7% voted in favor with many large factories yet to finish.

GM said it was disappointed by the UAW strike at Spring Hill and that it still seeks "to reach an agreement as quickly as possible." Spring Hill Manufacturing, an assembly and propulsion plant, is the largest GM facility in North America with nearly 4,000 total employees. The company’s earnings per share rose to $2.28, up from $2.25, in the past quarter. The company said that the strike cost it $200 million in its first two weeks of the quarter. The UAW has been on strike against GM as well as rivals Ford and Stellantis since September 15. The targeted strike started with work stoppages at one assembly plant for each of the automakers and 12,700 on strike but has grown since then. There are now more than 40,000 autoworkers on strike, with 9,200 members on strike at GM alone.

New York CNN —Three weeks into the United Auto Workers strike, signs of progress have emerged in talks between the union and General Motors. Another source familiar with negotiations said Wednesday that there has been active talks and progress in negotiations this week. But General Motors has yet to have significant progress in talks before now, and the union has twice expanded its strike against GM. GM had 46,000 UAW members on its its payroll at the start of the year. GM is the only automaker the UAW struck in 2019, a six-week strike that cost it $2.9 billion.

The strike cost at GM reflects 16 days in which production was stopped at one GM assembly plant, a mid-size pickup truck and van factory in Wentzville, Missouri. The UAW ordered a strike at a GM SUV assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan, on Sept. 29. Against that backdrop, GM said in a securities filing that it has locked in a new, $6-billion line of credit through October 2024. The additional liquidity will require GM to maintain at least $4 billion in global liquidity and $2 billion in U.S. liquidity. DETROIT – General Motors secured a new $6 billion line of credit as the automaker braces for additional strikes by the United Auto Workers union. The targeted strikes already cost the automaker $200 million during the third quarter, GM said Wednesday. A GM spokesman said the $200 million strike cost is due to lost production on wholesale volume, largely due to the UAW's initial Sept. 15 strike at GM's midsize truck and full-size van plant in Wentzville, Missouri. The strike has since expanded to GM's parts and distribution facilities nationwide and, as of last Friday, a crossover plant in mid-Michigan. New York CNN —General Motors and Ford are laying off 500 additional workers between them, blaming the expansion of the strike announced by the United Auto Workers union at those companies on Friday. General Motors said it was laying off 164 workers at stamping plants in Parma, Ohio, and Marion, Indiana. Ford said it laid off 330 workers at its Chicago Stamping Plant and Lima Engine Plant following the union’s decision Friday to strike its Chicago Assembly plant, which made the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs. It had previously laid off 600 hourly workers at the Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan who were not on strike. Those benefits for both strikers and laid-off UAW members will cost the union about $14.3 million a week, but it went into the strike with $825 million in its strike fund.

Those three struck plants are a Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan, a GM plant in Wentzville, Missouri and a Stellantis plant in Ohio. A week ago, Fain announced that there had been progress at Ford toward a settlement, and that it would not expand the strike there. But he said the lack of progress at GM and Stellatis meant that the union would expand the strike to 38 parts distribution centers at those two companies. The union had said from the start of the strike that was retaining the option to expand its walkout as a way of increasing pressure on the companies. New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike against GM and Stellantis but said that progress in negotiations with Ford means it won’t expand the number of Ford workers on the picket lines. “At noon Eastern today, all parts distributions centers at General Motors and Stellantis will be on strike,” he said. Still the announcement of progress at Ford raised hopes that the strike, at least at there, could be brought to a relatively quick end. But the UAW’s expanded strike is now targeting the parts distribution centers for GM and Stellantis. As of 10:30 am ET, Stellantis (STLA) is up 0.98%; Ford (F) is up 3.57%; and GM (GM) is up 0.7%.

General Motors and Stellantis said they have laid off additional workers because of consequences related to the United Auto Workers strike. The plants make parts for Jeep vehicles built at the automaker's Toledo Assembly Complex, where workers are also on strike. GM's Fairfax Assembly plant builds the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Cadillac XT4 crossover. "We have said repeatedly that nobody wins in a strike," GM said in a statement. Nearly 13,000 GM, Ford and Stellantis workers are on strike at the Wentzville, Toledo and Wayne plants.

Unifor’s talks with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Jeep and Ram, started on Aug. 10 but have been overshadowed by the U.A.W. Ford has an assembly plant and two engine plants in Canada. Unifor selected Ford as the “target” of its talks, meaning it focused on securing the best deal it could from the company before turning to the other two automakers. Ford’s deal in Canada appears to have little bearing on the U.A.W. ; a Ford truck and sport-utility vehicle plant in Wayne, Mich.; and a Stellantis S.U.V.

More layoffs are anticipated at Kokomo Transmission and Kokomo Casting in Kokomo, Indiana, impacting an additional 300 employees there, the company said. Ford and General Motors already laid off or warned of idling employees at two of their plants because of the targeted strikes. General Motors idled 2,000 employees at the company’s Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas due to the UAW’s targeted strike on its Wentzville Assembly Plant in Missouri, the company announced Wednesday. Due to the specific circumstances of this situation, impacted employees are not eligible for company-provided SUB-pay,” the company said in a statement. GM said it continues to bargain in good faith and is scheduled to be at the main bargaining table with the UAW today.

The United Auto Workers union is on strike, targeting a select few Detroit 3 car factories. After years of a pandemic-driven supply-and-demand car crunch that jacked up new and used vehicle prices and shrunk dealership supply, car buyers had just started to see a little respite. The used car market has been trickier to generalize, but even used vehicle listing prices finally dropped slightly in July. "Pricing may well go up just because of scarcity, and if that happens, then the consumer that potentially was buying a new car would move to the used car market," Russell Hensley, partner in McKinsey's global automotive and assembly practice, said. "Prices will likely go up in the used car market."
