These additives, along with high levels of sugar, salt and fat, help create the overwhelming lure of ultraprocessed foods. Ultraprocessed foods are typically high in added sugars, fats and salt; low in dietary fiber; and full of chemical additives, such as artificial colors, flavors and stabilizers. “There’s a lot of debate about whether or not all ultraprocessed foods are bad for you,” Hall said. Reduce intake of ultraprocessed foods — it’s really that simple.”Unfortunately, advisory committees are instructed to make recommendations using only the strictest science, Nestle added. It takes two overflowing trays of a mix of minimal and ultraprocessed foods to match the same energy density as one trayful of ultraprocessed foods.

Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, said he isn't holding his breath for an Apple TV. Munster said it's still a "painful topic" since he spent a lot of time looking into the Apple TV and was emphatic that it would happen. However, in 2014, another author, Yukari Iwatani Kane, wrote in "Haunted Empire: Apple After Steve Jobs" that Jobs told Apple employees in 2010 that a TV set wasn't happening. The lesson Munster learned about a company assembling a team and putting resources behind projects that may remain on the shelf continues to apply. Still, Munster's lesson didn't stop him from making a plea for CEO Tim Cook to bring the Apple TV to shelves.

Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, was one of 37 people the country’s federal police recommended for charges that include attempted coup d’état after the 2022 election that Bolsonaro lost. In a statement from Brazil's federal police, Bolsonaro and others are accused of violent abolition of the Democratic state of law, coup d’état and being a criminal organization. Once police present their report to Brazil’s Supreme Court, the office of the prosecutor general will decide whether to press charges against Bolsonaro and any former aides implicated. Senior members of Bolsonaro’s government were named by police, including his 2022 running mate, retired General Walter Braga Netto, who was defense minister, and retired General Augusto Heleno, who was national security adviser. Bolsonaro never recognized his October 2022 electoral defeat and he left Brazil days before Lula’s inauguration.

AdvertisementMen far outnumber women as news influencers on social media, per a new Pew Research Center study. That gender skew is showing up again in the latest platform for news: social media. That gender gap stands out for a few reasons:First, there's a much narrower gender divide (51% male and 46% female) among working US journalists, per a 2022 Pew survey. In Pew's analysis, there was a much smaller (and flipped) gender gap in the overall audience for news content on social media among young people. YouTube had the biggest gender gap, while TikTok's was minimalThe gender divide among news influencers was fairly consistent across all platforms in Pew's study.

Steve Jobs had apparently had mixed feelings about Apple entering the TV market before his death. Apple cofounder Steve Jobs reportedly made it clear before he died that Apple wouldn't pursue its own television set, but the company may now be revisiting the idea over a decade later. Jobs reportedly told biographer Walter Isaacson that he'd "finally cracked" how to make TVs simpler to use. In 2014, writer and former Apple beat reporter Yukari Iwatani Kane wrote in her book, "Haunted Empire: Apple After Steve Jobs," that Jobs told top Apple employees in 2010 that the company wouldn't be making a TV set. President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Elon Musk to help spearhead cuts to government spending, and the defense sector could be a prime target. But Musk's past comments hint at one area he could target: defense contracts. Musk built SpaceX's business model around fixed-price contracts. Republicans will keep control of the House of Representatives, NBC News projected Wednesday. Going into the election, House Republicans aimed to expand their razor-thin majority of 220 seats, compared to the 212 held by Democrats. That threadbare GOP majority gave Democrats high hopes to flip the chamber. Despite the massive fundraising effort, Democrats failed to gain the 218 seats needed for control of the House. CNN —Germany is set to hold a snap election on February 23 after an agreement was reached among parties in the country’s fractured parliament on Tuesday, according to reports from public broadcaster ARD. The confidence vote will be held on December 16 following an agreement from all parliamentary parties, according to ARD. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier needs to rubber-stamp the date of the election, but reports suggest this is a formality. Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, said last week, “there is absolutely no reason to wait until January” to call the confidence vote. His government has grown increasingly unpopular in Germany, with Scholz also one of the least popular chancellors ever, according to a September opinion poll.

In terms of the Electoral College, Trump is on track to win 312 electoral votes if his lead in Arizona holds. It would be a better showing than either his or Joe Biden’s 306 electoral votes in 2016 and 2020, respectively. But it would be far short of Barack Obama’s 365 electoral votes in 2008 and 332 in 2012. Bill Clinton never reached 50% in the popular vote because both of his presidential elections featured a strong third-party candidate in Ross Perot. CNN —German Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired his finance minister on Wednesday, leaving the government teetering on the brink of collapse. In a televised address, Scholz said he had dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner saying it “was necessary to prevent harm to our country.”The firing came after days of political negotiation between Scholz, Lindner, and Robert Habeck of the Green party, who is both the vice-chancellor and the economics minister. Scholz told the press conference Wednesday that “Lindner showed no willingness to implement any of our proposals” and, therefore, “there is no trust basis for any future cooperation” with the outgoing finance minister. The Chancellor also accused the finance minister of being “not about serving the common good but about serving his own clientele and party.”According to Scholz, Lindner will also be dismissed by the country’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “After the US elections we need to show we can be relied on,” Scholz said, adding that “great financial room for maneuver” is needed given the challenges that Germany faces.

Here's a look at some of the key counties to watch across the seven presidential battleground states, ordered by the state's final poll closing time (in Eastern Standard Time). Mitt Romney won more than 80% in Forsyth in 2012, but Trump won just two-thirds of the vote there eight years later. In 2020, Joe Biden won this county by only 4 points over Trump, while Hillary Clinton carried it by 13 points in 2016. While Trump won it by 3 points in 2016, Biden won Maricopa by 2 points four years later. And that Democratic gain helped the party flip Wisconsin in 2020, given that Biden won the state by just 20,000 votes.
