DETROIT — Stellantis is delaying the launch of its Ram electric pickup trucks from this year until the first half of 2025, as the trans-Atlantic automaker continues testing the vehicles. CEO Carlos Tavares on Tuesday declined to disclose details about what caused the delays or specific timing on the electric trucks, which include an all-electric “REV” model and an extended-range “Ramcharger” that’s equipped with an electric generator and a gas engine. Stellantis’ upcoming electric pickups are the first that will be built on the company’s new “STLA Frame platform” for its larger trucks and Jeep SUVs. It is expected to be a “multi-energy platform” that’s capable of internal combustion engines and hybrids, as well as electric models using batteries, fuel cells and range-extended electric propulsion systems. Doing so would deliver on Trump’s campaign comments about removing such incentives and EV initiatives.

Stellantis' Ram 1500 Revolution battery-electric concept pickup truck is introduced during a keynote address by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavaras during CES 2023 at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas on January 05, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. DETROIT — Stellantis is delaying the launch of its Ram all-electric pickup truck from this year until the first half of 2025, as the trans-Atlantic automaker continues testing the vehicle. CEO Carlos Tavares on Tuesday declined to disclose details about what caused the delay of the electric truck, which was expected to be followed by an extended-range "Ramcharger" that's equipped with an electric generator and a gas engine. It's better to take a few weeks more to validate properly than to rush and then to make mistakes in terms of quality. The all-electric pickup was expected to go on sale by the end of this year, followed by the Ramcharger during the first quarter of 2025.

Analysts said tariffs on cars imported from Mexico would have dire consequences for US automakers. Tesla announced in March 2023 that it was planning to build its seventh gigafactory near the industrial hub of Monterrey, Mexico. Trump vowed to clamp down on automakers building cars in Mexico on the campaign trail, and the prospect of new tariffs could force US automakers such as Tesla to make some hard choices about operational or planned factories in Mexico. Analysts told BI that the tariffs floated by Trump would deter automakers such as Tesla from investing in Mexico. Other automakers have expanded their presence in Mexico, despite the uncertainty of the election and the prospect of tariffs under a second Trump term.

DETROIT — Automaker Stellantis plans to indefinitely lay off up to 2,450 U.S. factory workers later this year as it discontinues production of an older version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck in Michigan. It is produced alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, located near Detroit. The current Ram 1500, which was recently updated for the 2025 model year, is produced at a nearby plant. “With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren [Michigan] Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year,” the company said in an emailed statement. The discontinuation of the Ram 1500 “Classic” vehicle is not unexpected, but the company has not announced a vehicle to replace the truck.

Southern California boasts the highest concentration of chrome plating shops in America and regulators in that state have been requiring those methods for years. But California is now moving toward an outright ban on chrome plating using hexavalent chromium while offering funding for chrome platers to transition to other methods. In 2019, green slime oozing out onto a highway near Detroit was found to be hexavalent chromium leaking from a nearby business. “We are also using light as the new chrome,” VW said in a statement shared with CNN. “Chrome peaked in the ’50s with the big American land yachts and stuff with giant chrome bumpers and giant chrome grills.

NEW YORK – Jeep plans to grow U.S. sales of its plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by as much as 50% this year as it leans into the technology as a bridge between its traditional gas-guzzling SUVs and all-electric vehicles amid a slower-than-expected sales pace of EVs. The Stellantis brand expects to sell 160,000 to 170,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs, in the U.S. this year, an increase of 40% to 50% from last year, Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa told CNBC. "One of the pillars of growth for the market is going to be freedom of choice." CNN —Jeep, widely known for making rugged off-road vehicles, has unveiled its first fully electric SUV for the North American market. The Wagoneer S will test the appetite of Jeep customers for a fully electric model. It comes at a time of waning interest in electric vehicles, even as regulatory requirements for them become more stringent. The new Wagoneer S has a sleeker, more aerodynamic shape than the Jeep Wagoneer models sold today. Jeep is working on putting the Wagoneer S Trailhawk into production, Filosa said in an interview with CNN.

Only the driver can hear the call and the person on the other end of the call can’t hear the music playing in the SUV. That’s not a new idea, but headrest speakers are usually found in convertibles where music, phone calls and navigation instructions have to overcome buffeting wind noise. CEO Carlos Tavares says the company's new large platform is flexible enough to handle batteries and electric motors, gas-electric hybrids and internal combustion engines. The company can also build midsize to large vehicles on those underpinnings, including sedans, crossover vehicles, SUVs and even off-road Jeeps. Electric vehicle sales growth is already slowing in many countries with consumers balking at the added cost as well as limited range and too few charging stations. On Friday, Ford said it was cutting production of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup after weaker-than-expected electric vehicle sales growth. A midsize vehicle platform announced by the company last year has similar flexibility, the company said.

At Stellantis, workers at the large Jefferson North factory that makes Jeep Grand Cherokees voted 70.7% in favor of the agreement. Ford envisions at least three new electric vehicles that will preserve jobs at several factories. Those and other closely held production plans by Detroit's automakers have emerged in details of the tentative contract agreements that ended the six-week strikes by the United Auto Workers union. The UAW's success in gaining commitments from the companies to build new electric vehicles at several factories represented a particular achievement. The automakers have all embraced the transition to electric vehicles as a large-scale and long-term commitment. And not all the companies’ production plans under the contract, of course, involve electric vehicles.

And Jeep has more inventory sitting on lots right now than many of its peers. JeepWhile competing automakers are operating rather lean and intentionally keeping lighter levels of supply at dealerships, the number of cars Jeep has on lots is considerably higher. (This number isn't always a red flag, depending on how popular a car is or how an automaker handled supply shortages in recent years.) Jeep had 77 days' supply at the end of June, according to Cox Automotive — higher than the national average of 53 days. Ford isn't far off, at nearly 76 days, but GM's GMC and Chevrolet sat at 63 and 50 days' supply, respectively, in the same period.

Stellantis told workers at both facilites the plants will be in “critical status” from July 5 through October 2. In the past, automakers have built up inventory of their most popular vehicles ahead of the UAW contract deadline and possible strike action. Headed into this year’s talks, Detroit automakers had lean inventories compared to the past. Production cuts forced by semiconductor shortages and efforts by all three Detroit automakers to keep prices high mean they have thinner cushions going into the fall. Formal contract negotiations between the Detroit Three automakers and UAW leaders are set to begin on July 13.

Automakers from Sony Honda to Hyundai are introducing ways at the CES 2023 technology trade show this week to reshape the in-car entertainment experience, including offering video games during the rides. "This is a field which can be deployed very quickly," Dirk Hilgenberg, head of Volkswagen AG's (VOWG_p.DE) CARIAD software unit, told Reuters at CES. In December, Tesla issued a "holiday update" to its software to add access to 1,000 PC games through the Steam platform. Still, these are features that consumers are demanding, so VW is at CES seeking partnerships. "We will see the content ... which is provided by software enabled functionality will be a decisive factor for buying."
