What we learned from the 2024 World Series
  + stars: | 2024-10-31 | by ( Grant Brisbee | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +9 min
You’re the winner, friend, because you’ve learned something about baseball during the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series, four games to one. They might have played the sloppiest inning in World Series history, if not the sloppiest game in World Series history. It was certainly the sloppiest game from a World Series team facing elimination, and I’m not fact-checking that. The World Series was promoted like “Godzilla vs. Kong,” except one of the monsters got hurt before he could do anything.

Never before had a team rallied to win the World Series after losing the first three games. These Yankees made history, but not the way they wanted – they are the only team to blow a five-run lead while facing elimination from the World Series. Then came something that’s always trouble: a little roller along first by a guy named Mookie in a World Series game in New York. AdvertisementIt was only the seventh game in World Series history in which a team lost after leading by five or more runs. And that no team in 54 years had won even once after losing the first three games of a World Series.

The Dodgers got their looks against the Yankees in this series, even if there were times when they struggled to capitalize. Volpe gave the Yankees a lead in this series for the first time since Game 1. From there, the bullpen hung tough and held off the Dodgers long enough to force Game 5 on Wednesday in the Bronx. CNN —Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani stole his 49th base of the season on Wednesday night to move to within one steal and two home runs of an unprecedented 50-50 season. “I was hoping for a bad throw because a good throw gets him,” said Roberts after the game, according to MLB.com. Ohtani is also just one home run away from matching the Dodgers franchise record of 49, set by Shawn Green in 2001. Once Knack was replaced with Dodgers debutant Zach Logue, the Marlins struck back with three runs in the fifth. Ten regular season games remain for Ohtani to reach the unprecedented 50-50 mark, and the Dodgers can confirm their ticket to the postseason with a win against the Marlins on Thursday night.
