CNN —The United States announced new individual sanctions Wednesday on more than 20 officials aligned with Venezuela’s authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro, to put pressure on Maduro to accept the results of Venezuela’s July presidential election, senior administration officials said in a briefing with reporters. Thursday marks exactly four months from the July election, and senior officials believe the new sanctions will put pressure on Venezuelan officials to break ranks from the Maduro government and facilitate a democratic transition in that country. His profile on X lists his location as “Make Kindness Cool Again.” Last week he smiled for every photo and shook hands with every fan who followed him to a county commissioners’ meeting in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The meeting itself was less chipper, with Presler’s acolytes repeatedly shouting “TRAITOR!” at a Democratic official, but Presler himself stayed upbeat. “For the first time in modern history, there are more registered Republicans than Democrats here in this county,” Presler said as he addressed the commissioners. According to the UNESCO study, 62% of surveyed creators said they don’t vet the accuracy of content before sharing it with their followers. The study comes in the wake of the 2024 US presidential election, in which social media influencers played a key role as an information source for voters. During the campaign, President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris harnessed social media influencers and podcasters with millions of followers, including Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper, to appeal directly to voters. And a separate survey from Pew found that more than half of American adults “at least sometimes” get their news from social media. As the Democratic Party debates where to go after its 2024 drubbing, we’re going to spend the next two episodes of the show featuring two very different perspectives on the way forward. After Trump won the election, Bernie Sanders released a blistering statement saying, “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them.”And Bernie’s advisers and allies have been making their own versions of this argument and jockeying for the positions that would help them rebuild the Democratic Party around this vision. Some have floated Bernie’s 2020 campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, to be the next chair of the Democratic National Committee. And the fact that they refuse to see it says something very telling about the party.
