CNN —Ryan Borgwardt, a Wisconsin kayaker accused of faking his own drowning and fleeing the country, is alive somewhere in Eastern Europe and has been talking to investigators, officials said. “Great news: we know that he’s alive and well,” Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Matthew L. Vande Kolk said Thursday. Borgwardt told investigators that he thought they would stop searching for him after about two weeks, officials said. He chose Green Lake, in part, because it is the deepest natural lake in Wisconsin. The FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations are assisting investigators, Vande Kolk said.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on criminal charges in federal court in Manhattan, a source familiar with the matter told CNBC on Wednesday night. The indictment, which remains sealed for now, at least in part accuses Adams of criminal conduct related to donations to his 2021 mayoral campaign. Adams, a 64-year-old former police captain, is at least the second New York mayor to be criminally charged while still in office. If Adams resigns before his first term in office ends, he would be replaced by New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams as acting mayor.

Last year, a criminal court found East Java-based drugmaker Afi Farma guilty of negligence and jailed officials for not testing the ingredients sent by its supplier. Reuters could not immediately contact CV Samudera Chemical, an Indonesian soapmaker, whose toxic ingredient made its way to Afi Farma, according to the court document of the Afi Farma criminal case in 2023.
