Read previewThe idea to move from New Jersey to Buenos Aires came to me one afternoon while watching the Diego Maradona (famed Argentine soccer player) biopic series on Amazon Prime. Within a year, I had enough to book a one-way United flight to Buenos Aires for 33,000 miles (plus $5 in taxes). AdvertisementMy points took me all around Argentina — and into other South American countriesMy home base for the next seven months was Buenos Aires in Argentina. One of the highlights of my seven months abroad was celebrating Argentina's World Cup win at the Obelisco Buenos Aires and chanting the national song alongside 5 million local fans. They don't pay for everything, but they make massive undertakings (like moving abroad for seven months) more seamless than ever before.

By now, they were supposed to be well into the first leg of the three-year Life at Sea cruise, sailing from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Punta Arenas in Chilean Patagonia. On Tuesday, 78 would-be Life at Sea passengers sent a letter to Markenzy Lapointe, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, asking him to investigate whether Miray, a Turkish cruise company, defrauded them out of millions of dollars. They claim that the company collected an estimated $16 million and used it toward a deposit to acquire a new ship that it did not end up purchasing. Dozens of passengers quit their jobs, sold their homes and withdrew their life savings to pay for what promised to be the adventure of a lifetime: a cruise with 382 ports of call over 1,095 days. But in late November, just days before the cruise was scheduled to depart, the voyage was canceled because Miray had failed to acquire a suitable ship.

If you have a domestic or shorter international flight after landing in Buenos Aires — like my second leg to Ushuaia — it could go out of AEP. So, be mindful of that when planning your travel day. The seats on my Aerolineas flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. Taylor Rains/Insider
CNN —One passenger was killed and four injured when a “rogue wave” hit their cruise ship during a storm earlier this week. The passengers had been taking an Antarctic cruise aboard the Viking Polaris when it was hit by the storm as it sailed towards Ushuaia, Argentina, late on Tuesday evening. The storm caused a giant wave that broke several panes of glass on the cruise ship and these fell onto and killed an American woman. The boat arrived in Argentina Wednesday and had sustained “limited damage” during the incident, Viking Cruises said. The US National Ocean Service describes rogue waves as being “very unpredictable” and says they often come unexpectedly from directions other than prevailing wind and waves.”
One person died and four others were injured after a "rogue wave" hit the Viking Polaris cruise ship while it was sailing toward Ushuaia, Argentina, on Tuesday night, officials said. “It is with great sadness that we confirmed a guest passed away following the incident,” Viking said in a statement Thursday. Rogue waves, or extreme storm waves, are uncommon, unpredictable and "greater than twice the size of surrounding waves," according to the National Ocean Service. “Everything was fine until the rogue wave hit, and it was just sudden. The Viking Polaris’ next departure, the Antarctic Explorer cruise scheduled for Dec. 5-17, was canceled due to the incident.
