Yet the energy sector climbed 22.9% under Biden as of Nov. 19, despite the administration's push for renewables and sustainability. As president, Trump is expected to embrace crypto more than any of his predecessors. When Biden won in 2020, there was a lot of panic about the outlook for energy, oil and gas.

CVS Health , UnitedHealth Group and Cigna sued the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday, claiming that the agency's case against drug supply chain middlemen over high insulin prices in the U.S. is unconstitutional. The FTC's in-house administrative process initiates a proceeding before an administrative judge who would hear the case. FTC commissioners then vote on that opinion. The Tuesday complaint argues that the FTC's process violates the companies' due process rights under the Fifth Amendment. The complaint comes a month after CVS, UnitedHealth Group and Cigna demanded FTC Chair Lina Khan and two other commissioners recuse themselves from the agency's in-house suit.

Financial and energy stocks have jumped since last week's election, but there's another area of opportunity that investors could be missing out on, according to Janus Henderson. The market has rallied since President-elect Donald Trump' s victory, although it took a breather on Tuesday. However, financial stocks may have "gotten in a bit ahead of themselves," said Jeremiah Buckley, a portfolio manager at Janus Henderson. In addition, there is great research and development happening in health care right now, especially in health-care services, Buckley added. Due to this, Piper Sandler has unveiled a list of stocks that it views as most sensitive to government spending. "If Trump wins, these stocks are likely to be hurt by cuts in government spending," Piper Sandler's chief investment strategist Michael Kantrowitz said in a recent note to clients. The company was the top recipient of defense contracts from the Department of Defense in fiscal 2023, being awarded $61.4 billion in defense spending. During September's presidential debate, Trump clashed with Harris over funding efforts, with Harris accusing Trump of being prepared to abandon consistent U.S. support for Ukraine . What kind of influence will Nvidia have on the 30-stock index when it joins before the bell this Friday? Instead, share price determines how much a single stock can move the Dow on a daily basis. A $1 move in any Dow stock translates to roughly 6.6 points on the index. By considering both share price and historical volatility, we can estimate each stock's potential influence on the index. According to a CNBC analysis of FactSet data, Nvidia would rank as the eighth-largest influence on the Dow based on its share price and recent volatility.

Nvidia, on the other hand, recently leapfrogged Intel as the biggest chipmaker by revenue, creating a clear one-for-one swap opportunity. With Intel being the only chipmaker in the index, the sector is underrepresented relative to its position in the economy. Nvidia positioned itself to join the Dow in May, when the company announced a 10-for-1 stock split. Amazon joined the Dow in January, giving the internet sector greater representation in the index. Meta's price of almost $562 would currently give it the heftiest weighting in the Dow, just ahead of UnitedHealth Group .

Here are some of the ways Bank of America analysts think the upcoming election results could affect the stock market. Harris presidency, split government A victory for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the White House, plus a Republican-controlled Congress, could be "the best outcome" for online media companies, according to Bank of America analyst Justin Post. He noted that Harris is likely to enforce a potential ban on TikTok — which could boost Meta Platforms and Snapchat . Trump president, split government A win for Republican candidate Donald Trump and a split government would be the best-case scenario for bank stocks, per analyst Ebrahim Poonawala. On the other hand, a Trump presidency would be viewed positively by gig-economy companies, including Uber and Lyft, according to analyst Post.

Zeroing in on cyber insurance as a key area for reform comes as the U.S. government scrambles to find ways to disrupt ransomware networks. For many organizations, deciding whether to pay a ransom is a difficult and urgent decision. The hacker group allegedly demanded a ransom to return the stolen data, though it remains unclear whether NPD paid it. Darren Williams, founder of BlackFog, a cybersecurity firm that specializes in ransomware prevention and cyber warfare, is firmly against paying ransoms. UnitedHealth Group experienced this firsthand after its subsidiary, Change Healthcare, was hit by the ALPHV/BlackCat ransom group in April 2023.

Dividend stocks could be poised to get their moment in the sun as interest rates fall – and investors only need to take a simple step to boost their long-term returns in these positions. "As rates fall, we might see people looking for longer-term alternatives and, in turn, dividend-paying stocks," he said. For starters, it's a form of dollar-cost averaging into a position, meaning you're buying the stock at regular intervals regardless of the price. "It allows them to reinvest this dividend on a regular scheduled timeframe and have a great opportunity for a larger total return over the long term." UnitedHealth Group provided a 2025 profit forecast below Wall Street estimates on Tuesday, saying it expects pressure across its government-supported health insurance businesses, and its shares fell 9%. The largest U.S. health insurer forecast a profit of as much as $30 per share. UnitedHealth's third-quarter medical costs also exceeded Wall Street estimates as the insurer paid out more due to persistently high demand for healthcare services while receiving lower reimbursements on government-backed plans. The company also trimmed the higher end of its 2024 adjusted profit forecast by 25 cents to $27.75 per share. Despite the rise in medical costs, UnitedHealth beat Wall Street estimates for adjusted profit by 15 cents due to increased memberships across its businesses.
