London CNN —British members of parliament have voted to legalize assisted dying, approving a contentious proposal that would make the United Kingdom one of a small handful of nations to allow terminally ill people to end their lives. The bill must still clear the House of Lords and parliamentary committees, but Friday’s vote marked the most important hurdle. Canada, New Zealand, Spain and most of Australia allow assisted dying in some form, as do several US states including Oregon, Washington and California. MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they can support either side according to their conscience, with no political ramifications. Polling indicates that a comfortable majority of the public supports assisted dying.

CNN —A flight packed with vacationers had to be aborted in midair because a technical mistake meant the aircraft failed to pressurize. The investigation revealed that switches that regulate the air pressure inside the plane, known as bleed air switches, were turned off during maintenance work carried out on the air conditioning system before takeoff. The oversight was also not detected by the pilots, either before takeoff or during “after takeoff checks,” the report found. Once the error emerged, the pilots turned the switches back on but the report found that the crew failed to take other actions set out in the Quick Reaction Handbook (QRH) in response to the warning. It can also be the result of carbon monoxide poisoning or breathing in too much smoke from a fire.

CNN —German leaders raised the possibility that a fiery cargo plane crash in Lithuania on Monday was the result of sabotage or hybrid warfare. The cargo plane was flying from Leipzig, Germany, and was due to land at Vilnius Airport when it crashed a few kilometers from the runway. The plane skidded on the ground for several hundred meters before hitting a residential home, authorities in Lithuania said. “Our initial information does not indicate that we need to be investigating more serious actions,” Prosecutor Arturas Urbelis said in a statement, according to Reuters. A DHL cargo plane crashed into a house in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, killing one person on board and injuring three passengers, authorities in the Baltic nation said Monday. "According to preliminary data, a cargo aircraft carrying 4 people crashed near the Vilnius International airport at 5.30 AM local time. The Department of Fire Protection and Rescue said in a statement: "It turned out that a cargo plane had crashed and a residential house caught fire. Six travelers have died from suspected methanol poisoning after visiting the tourist town of Vang Vieng, Laos, this month. A lack of knowledge about methanol poisoning, from the public as well as the medical communities where outbreaks often occur, exacerbates the problem, according to the organization. Where incidents are the highestMost incidents of methanol poisoning occur in Asia, according to Doctors Without Borders. A website by Doctors Without Borders that monitors methanol poisoning says many foreign tourists have fallen victim to methanol poisoning after consuming incorrectly distilled "arak" in Bali, Lombok and Gili Islands. In September, several people were poisoned by methanol in Indonesia after consuming alcohol ordered off the internet, according to the website.

CNN —A ransomware attack has disrupted a third-party software system that Starbucks uses to track and manage its baristas’ schedules, forcing the coffee chain to shift to manual mode to ensure its employees get paid properly, a Starbucks spokesperson said Monday. Starbucks’ store leadership have advised their employees on how to work around the outage manually, and the company will make sure everyone gets paid for all hours worked, according to Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson. Starbucks joins a growing list of companies disrupted by the hack of Blue Yonder, an Arizona-based cloud services provider that serves grocery stores and Fortune 500 firms. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Starbucks was impacted by the Blue Yonder hack. A range of major multinational corporations use Blue Yonder cloud services to manage their supply chains.

CNN —A major software supply-chain company, which counts US and UK grocery stores and Fortune 500 firms as clients, said it was hit by a ransomware attack this weekend. A Blue Yonder spokesperson did not answer questions about which clients were affected, including those in the United States. “On November 21, 2024, Blue Yonder experienced disruptions to its managed services hosted environment, which was determined to be the result of a ransomware incident,” Blue Yonder said in an initial public statement on Friday. Some of the biggest US grocery chains use Blue Yonder, including Albertsons — the parent company of chains like Safeway and Jewel-Osco — and Kroger, the parent company of chains like Ralphs and Fred Meyer. Russia has fired about 60 North Korean KN-23 missiles at Ukraine this year, according to a Ukrainian defense official. These less-sophisticated missiles are part of North Korea’s growing support to Moscow, which also includes about 11,000 North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia’s Kursk region. Strikes using North Korean missiles have killed at least 28 people and injured 213 this year, the Ukrainian prosecutor general told CNN. Ukrainian investigators found evidence that crucial components used in the North Korean missiles are produced by at least nine Western manufacturers. There are more than 250 companies whose components have been identified in North Korean missiles, according to CAR.

CNN —A Norwegian man working as a security guard for the US Embassy in Oslo was arrested this week on allegations of spying for Russia and Iran. According to Norway’s public broadcaster NRK, the man is in his 20s and was arrested at home in his garage on Wednesday. He is charged with attempted aggravated intelligence activities against state secrets and admitted to having collected and shared information with Russian and Iranian authorities, according to NRK. The arrest comes amid ongoing concerns about Moscow and Tehran’s espionage and influence operations around the globe. Western officials have disrupted plots from Tehran to harm or kill individuals, including an alleged assassination plot against President-elect Donald Trump.

London CNN —The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla held in May last year cost British taxpayers £72 million ($91 million), an amount some have labeled excessive. The £72 million spent on the coronation could have paid for 24 million free meals for schoolchildren in London, based on the city government’s current budget of £3.00 ($3.75) per meal. Some additional spending came from the Privy Purse, the monarch’s private source of income, a royal source told CNN. “Plans (for the coronation) were scaled back,” the royal source told CNN. The culture department, in its accounts, said it had underspent its budget on the coronation by £2.8 million ($3.5 million).

Foreign tourists kayaking and tubing on the Song River in Vang Vieng, Laos, on November 19. “(We are) aware of a number of cases of suspected methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng, possibly through the consumption of methanol-laced alcoholic drinks,” the US Embassy in Vientiane said in a health alert Friday. The warning came after the US State Department confirmed to CNN that an American citizen had died in Vang Vieng.
