An embattled legacyUS Navy crewmembers boarding USS Beloit at Veterans Park in Milwaukee. Diana SalgadoThe Navy operates two types of littoral combat ships: the Independence-class and the Freedom-class. For example, USS Milwaukee, a $750 million Freedom-class ship, was decommissioned last year after just eight years in service. It's one of about half a dozen littoral combat ships — most being from the Freedom class — that have been pulled from active service. The Navy has since put some of its hopes for the LCS into the new class of frigate in development.

The US has sent Ukraine and Israel billions of dollars worth of ammunition in recent years. The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East show the US how much ammo it will need for its next big war. Beyond the ammunition, the US has also sent Ukraine a significant amount of armored vehicles, air-defense systems, drones, anti-tank weapons, small arms, and more. Given Beijing's formidable arsenal of anti-ship missiles, Navy vessels would need to be well-armed with interceptors to take down these threats and defend American assets in the Pacific. The US has transferred Patriot batteries and their associated interceptor missiles to Ukraine, where they have gotten a workout against Russian missiles.

The CMSI study makes clear that a US invasion of Taiwan in 1945 — or a Chinese invasion today — would be difficult and risky. Earlier this month, the US and allies practiced taking out a large surface ship with long-range weapons, including, for the first time, a US Air Force B-2 bomber. It showed the US military can use one of its most survivable weapons platforms, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, to sink a major surface ship with a low-cost guided bomb. The Air Force says its stealthy characteristics allow it to penetrate heavily defended areas and also fly with a small chance of being detected by radar at high altitudes. Mating it up with relatively cheap and demonstrably effective precision-guided bombs with warheads of up to 2,000 pounds could give the Air Force bombers the “anti-ship lethality” of a submarine-launched torpedo without the liabilities of a submarine, according to a US Air Force website. The Air Force first tested QUICKSINK in 2022, when an F-15 fighter jet released a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that destroyed a full-scale surface target in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an Air Force statement.
