The matter before the school board was straightforward. The new bus would be larger than the old one, board members learned at the meeting 18 months ago, and also totally free, thanks to a federal grant. But the biggest difference: The new bus would be powered not by a diesel engine but by electricity. The bus didn’t stir up much discussion that first meeting, recalled Christopher Prososki, the superintendent, who’s known around town as Dr. P.“A free bus is a free bus,” he said. The school board president nicknamed it “the Biden bus,” annoying the superintendent.

Have dinosaurs evolved on other worlds? Could we spot a planet of glowing organisms? What nearby star systems are positioned to observe Earth passing in front of the sun? These are just a few of the questions that Lisa Kaltenegger has joyfully tackled. How much is the diversity of opinion and emotion from people around the search for extraterrestrial life top-of-mind in your research?

A ‘Perfect Monolith’ Appears in Wales

Not one to let “horrific” weather stop him, Craig Muir left his house in Hay-on-Wye in Powys, Wales, early Tuesday to take his usual walk up Hay Bluff when he spotted something large, shiny and new. Standing there in the distance, like a beacon, was a silver monolith with no apparent trace as to how it got there or what it was doing in that spot. It looked like it had “just been dropped down from space,” Mr. Muir said during a telephone interview on Tuesday. The sighting immediately captured media attention, calling to mind similar mysterious objects placed around the world in late 2020. “If you didn’t know anything, to look at it, you could have easily thought it had been dropped off by a U.F.O.

I listened to “Motorway to Roswell” by the Pixies a million times, but it’s not exactly where this movie came from. paperbacks I inhaled as a nerdy kid in Lubbock, Texas, and partly it was Lubbock itself. Then I took Robb Moss’s nonfiction filmmaking class at Harvard. For Marker, movies don’t replace our memories, exactly, but they create a little memorial in the place where a memory used to be. So that’s what my movie is for me now, 30 years later: a memento.

The Secret Service had to “adjust our operational tactics” to protect President Biden because the first family’s dog kept biting agents, including one who required six stitches and another whose blood spilled onto the floor of the White House, according to newly released internal emails posted online. Commander was banished from the White House last fall to an undisclosed location. “The recent dog bites have challenged us to adjust our operational tactics when Commander is present — please give lots of room (staying a terrain feature away if possible),” an assistant special agent in charge of the Presidential Protection Division wrote to the team. and military activities, and posted on his website, called The Black Vault. The Secret Service confirmed the documents were authentic.

A report released on Thursday by a panel convened by NASA does not attempt to provide a definitive answer to that question. Instead, it proposes a bigger role for the space agency in collecting and interpreting data on “unidentified anomalous phenomena,” or U.A.P. In response, the space agency announced that it had appointed a director of U.A.P. “NASA will do this work transparently for the benefit of humanity,” Bill Nelson, the NASA administrator, said in a news release. NASA officials said that part of the reason for keeping the identity secret was the harassment and threats received by panel members during the period of the study.

Mexico’s Congress is usually meant to be a venue for solemn presentations on budgets and other serious legislation. researcher who brought with him some unusual objects: two mummified specimens that he claimed were the bodies of extraterrestrial beings. The presentation of the mummies on Tuesday by Jaime Maussan, a journalist who has speculated widely on aliens, caused jaws to drop and memes to multiply around the country. The two specimens, which Mr. Maussan said were found in Peru in 2017, were tiny in stature and chalky in color; each had three-fingered hands and what appeared to be shrunken or desiccated heads. “These are nonhuman beings who are not part of our terrestrial evolution,” Mr. Maussan declared under oath, with a sign-language interpreter at his side.

Local legend has it that Elmwood is a favorite visiting place of extraterrestrials and U.F.O.s, a reputation that inspired the name of the annual festival. The stories go back many decades. One of Elmwood’s most infamous stories is the one about the police officer George Wheeler, whose squad car is said to have been hit with some kind of blue light from a U.F.O. one night in 1976. Six months later, Wheeler was dead, as reported in Howard Blum’s 1990 book, “Out There: The Government’s Secret Quest for Extraterrestrials.”

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. A mysterious cylindrical object found on a remote Australian beach this month is a piece of debris from an Indian rocket, Australia’s space agency announced on Monday. This means that it is not — as some people had speculated online — a piece of a Malaysia Airlines plane that disappeared over the Indian Ocean in 2014, or a U.F.O. “We have concluded the object located on a beach near Jurien Bay in Western Australia is most likely debris from an expended third-stage of a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle,” the Australian Space Agency said on social media. The object is in storage, the agency said, noting that it was working with the Indian Space Research Organization to decide what to do next. A 1968 United Nations agreement requires countries to return recovered space debris to the country that owned it.

“I met a fellow who came in here all the way from Denmark to be here for this meeting. So this is huge.”It is not clear, however, that the hearing provided the gentleman from Denmark much more than what has already been reported. The men first described the incidents to The New York Times in 2017 and 2018 in stories that prompted calls from lawmakers for more government transparency. The sightings were reported to the Pentagon’s shadowy Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, which analyzes radar data, video footage and accounts provided by senior officers. Some of the objects in videos released by the Pentagon have been explained as optical illusions or drones, but others remain unexplained.

Some of the videos released by the Pentagon have been explained as optical illusions or drones, but others remain unexplained and the object of much speculation. Under pressure from Congress, the Pentagon and intelligence agencies have gathered hundreds of reports of unexplained phenomena. Officials have said most of the unexplained incidents are airborne trash, Chinese spying efforts or errant weather balloons. American officials have repeatedly said that none of the videos or other material they have collected appears to be evidence of alien visitation. But in cases in which no formal conclusion has been reached, officials have been reluctant to share information on their deliberations or theories.

Download the audio app here. Earlier this month, a news outlet called The Debrief published a story that included, to put it mildly, some explosive material. The story centered on David Grusch, a decorated former combat veteran who has worked in multiple government intelligence agencies and served on the Pentagon’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force. The novel’s emphasis on the limitations of any attempted secret government, finally, connects specifically to our peculiar U.F.O. discourse, where we suddenly have a government whistle-blower claiming knowledge of a 90-year conspiracy and, apparently, a chorus of anonymous sources encouraging belief. If there were an alien cover-up, though, I would imagine it would look more like the secrets held by N.I.C.E. in “That Hideous Strength.” Crucially, almost nobody in Lewis’s invented organization has any idea that in the inner ring they’re contacting the dark powers. In his account, and the one that’s implied by other anonymous leaks, you don’t have to get that far up the chain of command before somebody will take you aside and say, Look, we’ve got alien ships, lots of alien ships, you wouldn’t believe how many alien ships.

The Lazar story is a useful backdrop to the latest round of claims about secret U.S. programs involving alien technology, which just appeared in the technology website The Debrief. Useful, first, because of the familiarity — once again we have a whistle-blower claiming knowledge of long-hidden work on otherworldly crafts. My general view is that the U.F.O.-encounter phenomena seems in continuity with supernatural experiences reported across the long pre-modern past — abductions into faerie realms, especially. First, that inhuman species cross oceans of space or leap interdimensional barriers using unfathomable technology and yet somehow keep crashing and leaving souvenirs behind. Second, that human governments have been collecting evidence for generations without the truth ever being leaked or uncovered or just blurted out by Donald Trump.

Tucker Carlson, the sidelined prime-time Fox News host, on Tuesday released the first installment of what he said would be his new show on Twitter, potentially setting up a confrontation with the cable network, where he remains under contract until early 2025. The 10-minute video, Mr. Carlson’s first extended commentary since Fox took him off the air in April, was similar to a stripped-down version of what his roughly three million Fox viewers would have seen on his nightly program. There were no guests or produced segments — only a monologue from Mr. Carlson, in which he hit some familiar themes. He expressed sympathy for President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and mocked President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. He wrapped up by declaring that U.F.O.s and extraterrestrial life are “actually real.”“As of today, we’ve come to Twitter,” Mr. Carlson said in the video.

CNN —Tucker Carlson is back — sort of. He wrapped up by declaring that U.F.O.s and extraterrestrial life are ‘actually real.’”“As of today, we’ve come to Twitter,” Carlson said in the video. Regardless, whether the Twitter show has the same influence and reach as Carlson’s one-time Fox News time slot is far from certain. Carlson faces an uphill climb if he hopes to reclaim the power he once enjoyed through Twitter videos. The first episode of “Tucker on Twitter” didn’t help.

Many in the public are invested in the idea that some of the anomalous phenomena could be extraterrestrial. NASA officials said many panel members had been subjected to online harassment. Throughout the meeting, many commentators on NASA’s YouTube feed accused panel members of lying or covering up evidence of extraterrestrials. Despite such hostility, the panel tried to explain some of the material that has fascinated the public. Many military videos of these phenomena appear interesting at first, but only later do ordinary explanations emerge.

Another world existed in Wellington, where the crowd was as boisterous as the South Beach tent but more patrician. On the other, the members of the private Polo Club at the National Polo Center drank rosé and Kentucky whiskey and sampled from a buffet with a caviar and blini station. The tables were filled with players, families and patrons who own enormous polo enterprises. “We are highly competitive,” said Daniel K. Walker, the chief executive of F&M Bank in California, and a respected polo patron who owns about 50 ponies that he and his sons use. (He referred to the cost of running a polo enterprise as his “money pit of choice.”)Mr. Walker was visiting a table with a raucous Argentine group.

The master key to understanding Tucker Carlson’s programming wasn’t ideology; it was suspicion. Then something changed — after the Iraq war, after Jon Stewart helped kill “Crossfire,” he gradually became disillusioned, radicalized. But Carlson wasn’t like the right-wing personalities — a Mark Levin, say — who surrendered to Trumpism reluctantly because that’s where their listeners wanted them to go. Which is why his show was the farthest right on cable news but also sometimes the farthest left. These forays were not in tension with his willingness to entertain the far right’s “Great Replacement” paranoia about immigration or fixate on a possible F.B.I.

That hearing discussed an unclassified report issued by a Department of Defense task force in 2021. There is precedent for the Defense Department, scientists and the media playing down reports of UFOs rather than prioritizing truly open scientific inquiry. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Air Force established a UFO task force named Project Blue Book and commissioned an independent scientific study of the phenomena. There is now a danger that the NASA study, which is also supposed to be objective, may not live up to this scientific ideal. If government and academia don’t do so with UFOs, we may end up with another independent scientific panel in another 50 years, but be no closer to the truth.
