CNN —The holiday season always reminds Tyler Perry of his late mother Maxine. She also died 15 years ago this month, a grief Perry said still visits him this time of year. “Grief shows up when it wants to,” he told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on this week’s episode of his “All There Is” podcast, now in its third season. It took around nine years for Perry to “turn the corner” after his mother’s death. Steve Mensch, the president and general manager at Tyler Perry Studios, was killed when a single-engine plane he was piloting crashed Friday night in Florida. The Citrus County Sheriff's office identified Mensch as the sole occupant of the single-engine fixed-wing airplane that crashed Friday around 8 p.m. in Homosassa. Florida Highway PatrolTyler Perry Studios confirmed that Mensch had died. “We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Steve Mensch. Our heart goes out to his family as we all send them our prayers.”The crash closed parts of Highway 19 and Longfellow Street, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

In an email to CNN on Saturday, Tyler Perry Studios said: “We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Steve Mensch. Our heart goes out to his family as we all send them our prayers.”Mensch managed the day-to-day operations at Tyler Perry Studios, a 300-acre studio lot in Atlanta, according to his LinkedIn profile. “I was incredibly sad to learn about the tragic passing of Steve Mensch, the President and General Manager of Tyler Perry Studios,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement. “His loved ones and the entire Tyler Perry Studios team will be in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn this loss.”CNN’s Lisa Respers France and Kia Fatahi and Chris Boyette contributed to this report.
