President Joe Biden might be a lame-duck president, but he spent Monday sparing the lives of two birds. Biden kicked off the ceremony by cracking a joke about the big crowd present to witness the two turkeys’ second chance at life. “They tell me there’s 2,500 people here today…looking for a pardon,” Biden joked. The National Turkey Federation posted photos of the feathered pair in the hotel and even a “Get Ready With Us” video of the two arriving at their turkey-proofed accommodation. Following their pardons, the two turkeys will become agricultural ambassadors and enjoy retirement on a farm in Southern Minnesota, the National Turkey Federation said Sunday.

Someone at the National Turkey Federation once had an idea: Let’s send a live turkey to Harry Truman for a presidential holiday feast! Previously, some individual turkey producers had sent their products to the president to promote them, but the greater resources of the National Turkey Federation meant that the story could be promoted more effectively. The turkey sent to President Truman was killed and eaten, as were turkeys subsequently sent to President Dwight Eisenhower. The turkeys pardoned by President Biden last Thanksgiving were supplied by America’s largest turkey producer, Jennie-O Turkey Store, part of the giant Hormel Foods Corporation. Other turkey producers also received many millions of dollars, part of a huge subsidy for U.S. turkey and chicken producers.

I hereby pardon Liberty and Bell. Even though Liberty and Bell are from Minnesota, they’re named for a famous Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. These birds have a new appreciation for the word, “let freedom ring.” So I’m told by the Turkey Federation and the Liberty Bell — Liberty and Bell — they love honeycrisp apples. Ice hockey. I sure as hell would like to see them play ice hockey.

The 4.6 million birds killed this year compares to the nearly 58 million birds the U.S. Department of Agriculture said were slaughtered last year in the first year of the outbreak. Retail turkey prices aren't tracked the same way, but USDA reports show that wholesale frozen turkey prices averaged $1.15 per pound in October, down from last year's $1.79 per pound and the previous year's $1.35 per pound. “I think there should be a lot of relief coming in the holiday season.”A combination of factors contributed to the sharp drop in bird flu cases this year. Officials say bird flu doesn’t represent a significant health threat. Bird flu vaccines are being developed and might help in the future, but at this point they remain impractical.

Biden quipped that there had been "no ballot stuffing" and "no fowl play" during the midterms. He also said the "only red wave this season" would be if his dog, Commander, knocked over cranberry sauce. "The votes are in, they've been counted and verified, there's no ballot stuffing, there's no fowl play," Biden said on the White House South Lawn, according to a transcript of the speech. "The only red wave this season is gonna be if German Shepherd, Commander, knocks over the cranberry sauce on our table." Biden's quips came after a widely-touted "red wave" for the Republican Party failed to materialize during the midterms.
CHICAGO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Cooks may have to put away their oversized platters for serving turkey this Thanksgiving. If a farm has an outbreak, producers must disinfect their barns after culling turkeys and wait about six months before restocking. The National Turkey Federation acknowledged that cooks in some geographic areas could see limited supplies of big turkeys. On the U.S. East Coast, Baldor sees a shortage of the bigger sizes as large Thanksgiving celebrations make a comeback, Lindgren said. Shoppers are resuming traditional purchases of turkeys around 18 pounds, after downsizing their birds for smaller gatherings over the last two years, he said.
