Former President Donald Trump has won Pennsylvania, NBC News projects, securing 19 Electoral College votes in the most hotly contested battleground state of the race. Trump was the only other Republican nominee to carry the state when he won it in 2016. Carrying Pennsylvania puts Trump one step closer toward reclaiming the White House four years after he lost the state to Joe Biden. NBC News exit polling showed Trump winning 57% of Latinos in the state after exit polls in 2020 showed him winning just 27% of Pennsylvania's Latino vote. Meanwhile, officials on both sides of the aisle, particularly in Pennsylvania, felt Harris would secure her win in Pennsylvania by tapping Josh Shapiro, the state’s popular governor, as her running mate.

The yen carry trade unwind in August led to a temporary market pullback and recovery. AdvertisementThe foreign exchange market has been eerily quiet since the yen carry trade unwind. Much of the moves from the yen carry unwinding witnessed in August happened at this layer, Barrett said. But what we've seen in the yen carry trade is only the beginning, Barrett said. CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet at Trump Tower on Friday morning, according to Trump, giving the Ukrainian leader the chance to make a personal pitch to a GOP presidential nominee openly skeptical of continued US security assistance for Ukraine against Russia. Still, it’s unclear whether Zelensky can say anything to convince Trump to change his position on the Russia-Ukraine war and US security assistance. Zelensky said this week that Trump doesn’t know how to end Russia’s war on Ukraine. But an in-person meeting while Zelensky, who was in town for the UN General Assembly, appeared unlikely earlier this week. “Those cities are gone, they’re gone, and we continue to give billions of dollars to a man who refused to make a deal, Zelensky.

You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

A few days ago, Donald J. Trump said vice-presidential nominees have “virtually no impact” electorally. By selecting Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz, as her running mate on Tuesday, Kamala Harris put Mr. Trump one step closer to being proved right. A few days ago, it wasn’t so obvious Mr. Trump’s claim was on safe footing. While it’s true that most vice-presidential nominees don’t have a major impact, they often help the ticket in the vice-presidential nominee’s home state. Instead, she selected someone from Minnesota, which is not a top-tier battleground.

Former President Donald Trump on Monday continued a streak of appearances with controversial influencers, this time in a 90-minute livestream with Adin Ross. When it comes to investing in sectors such as financials and energy under Trump, Bianco believes that size matters. A Harris presidency would benefit the renewable energy industry, according to Amanda Rebello, head of Xtrackers ETF sales at DWS. That's primarily because a Harris presidency would result in more stringent fiscal policy than a Trump one. Trump's trade policies would be "recessionary" and could make inflation worse, according to Kenneth Rogoff. The Harvard economist pointed to Trump's proposed tariffs on imports, including a 60% tariff on Chinese goods. AdvertisementDonald Trump's proposed tariffs on imports would have "recessionary" effects on the US economy and could end up sending inflation higher again, according to top economist Kenneth Rogoff. Rogoff said that Trump's proposed policies and Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act make them both the "most protectionist" presidential candidates the US has seen in a while, Rogoff said to Bloomberg on Wednesday. That could hamper economic growth and stoke inflation, making Trump one of the biggest threats to the global economy, "Dr. Doom" economist Nouriel Roubini recently argued.

President Joe Biden clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, NBC News projects, winning a majority of the necessary delegates and setting up what is expected to be a bitter, closely contested rematch with Donald Trump. By clearing the field for the 81-year-old Biden, Democrats have gambled that he remains the party's best shot at defeating Trump one more time. The general election campaign opens with Biden an underdog against an opponent who historians have ranked as the worst president in the nation's history. He ran for the party's nomination in 1988 and again in 2008 and never made headway with rank-and-file Democratic voters. Through sheer persistence, he is now finishing a presidential term while wrapping up his second party nomination in a row.

At one point, Mr. DeSantis lacerated Mr. Trump’s record as president, saying he had failed to deliver on many campaign promises. “I was in Congress the first two years when Trump was president,” Mr. DeSantis said. One supporter asked Mr. DeSantis if he was afraid of being marginalized by Mr. Trump. Mr. DeSantis urged caution on such news reports but appeared to address years-old bad blood between him and one of Mr. Trump’s top aides, Susie Wiles, who had once worked for Mr. DeSantis. Johnson’s Trump began delivering laughs by answering questions from random South Carolina voters, including one that asked “Trump” what made him think he could defeat President Joe Biden. Haley then raised the issue of Trump’s mental fitness, asking, “Are you doing OK, Donald? Then there is Haley’s demand that Trump debate her, a matter which in my view is not unrelated to the issue of Trump’s mental acuity. Trump’s refusal to debate during the GOP primaries so far has deprived the nation that opportunity. It’s a far lesser transgression, but Trump’s refusal to debate Haley should be viewed by all Americans through that prism.

The person of whom I speak is, of course, Donald Trump. So when I came across a fledgling satirical magazine, Spy, that articulated precisely what I was thinking, I was smitten. In its inaugural issue, Spy named Mr. Trump one of the “10 Most Embarrassing New Yorkers,” noting his tackiness, his shady tactics as a landlord and his “hustler-on-his-best-behavior manner.” Yes! I joined the staff full-time in 1989 and we continued to chronicle Mr. Trump’s offenses against taste and decency. We came up with a slew of epithets for him, including the one that stuck, “short-fingered vulgarian.” Then, as now, Mr. Trump was thin-skinned, and obsessed with his press coverage.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s huge win in the Iowa caucuses on Monday enshrines one of the most astonishing comebacks in American political history. His MAGA-hat wearing crowd greeted him with chants of “Trump, Trump, Trump” beneath two vast screens reading “Trump wins Iowa!”But the ex-president’s rebound is more stunning for another reason. Trump’s Iowa victory also sharpens the collision between the 2024 election and his legal imbroglio. His unhinged behavior, incessant shattering of rules and challenges to the law reinvigorated a brand perfectly tailored to Republican voters who despise “elites” in politics, government and the media. Trump’s victory will also give Russian President Vladimir Putin another reason to prolong the bloody war in Ukraine.

President Biden, perhaps Amtrak’s most famous advocate, announced $16.4 billion in funding for rail projects on Monday, exhibiting a business-as-usual approach as polls show him trailing former President Donald J. Trump one year before Election Day. Speaking at a maintenance warehouse where Amtrak trains are serviced in Bear, Del., Mr. Biden made no mention of the polling from The New York Times and Siena College polls. Instead, he offered familiar anecdotes about his days as a senator, when a conductor named Angelo would call him “Joey, baby!” and squeeze his cheeks as he made the 90-minute ride between Washington and his home in Wilmington, Del. “This is not about whether I like the language Mr. Trump uses,” U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan said in announcing the decision. But Molly Gaston, who argued for the prosecution, underscored that the Justice Department isn’t seeking to prevent Trump from campaigning. Notably, the judge’s order deals Trump one of the first major consequences he’ll have to reckon with in relation to his ongoing trials. It remains to be seen how the order will impact his daily social media presence and campaigning tactics. Trump did not immediately respond directly to Chutkan’s order, but a spokesman called it the work of “weaponized and targeted law enforcement.”

The Michigan charges were announced on the same day that Mr. Trump said he received another so-called target letter from Jack Smith, the special counsel for the Justice Department who is investigating his efforts to hold onto power after he lost the 2020 election. Both investigations are part of a reckoning over the conspiracy theories Mr. Trump and his allies have promoted about the election. Outside of Michigan, supporters of Mr. Trump, then the president, pushed to convene slates of fake electors in six other swing states that Mr. Biden actually won. One of those states, Georgia, is the site of a separate criminal investigation involving Mr. Trump himself, who pressured state officials to help him overturn his loss.
