An American citizen has died at a popular adventure spot in Laos where alcohol tainted with methanol has been blamed for a spate of poisonings in recent days. The State Department said the U.S. citizen died in Vang Vieng, a town popular with backpackers to the north of the South East Asian country’s capital. Citing confidentiality, it would not comment when asked whether they died of methanol poisoning. One of South East Asia’s poorest countries, authorities in Laos have long cautioned foreign travelers about tainted drinks at nightclubs and bars. Delta Air Lines will begin shaking up its menu by serving Shake Shack cheeseburgers on flights departing from Boston this December, part of a new partnership with the New York-based burger chain. Almost 80 million people will hit the roads and airways this Thanksgiving, with traveler numbers surpassing pre-pandemic levels, the AAA predicts. Journeys of 50 miles or more will be made by 79.9 million people in the holiday period — an increase of 1.7 million from last year and 2 million more than in 2019. "Thanksgiving is the busiest holiday for travel, and this year we’re expecting to set new records across the board, from driving to flying and cruising," Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel said in a statement. The majority of trips, 71.7 million, will be by car, meaning 1.3 million more travelers will be on the road compared to last year. A record 5.84 million plan to fly, a 9% increase from 2019, with international flight bookings up 23%, the AAA said.

Spirit Airlines said Monday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after struggling with losses, growing debt and a failed merger during the post-pandemic travel lull. The deal comes with a commitment of $350 million in equity investment from bondholders, which it said equates to $795 million of outstanding debt. The company's share price fell from £3.22 to $1.15 last week after the Wall Street Journal reported it was preparing to file for bankruptcy protection, closing on $1.07 on Friday. Spirit said last month it would cut jobs and sell 23 older planes in a bid to save $80 million. Industry analysts said at the time that the court's decision left Spirit with few options but to face a likely restructure and bankruptcy.
