CNN —Honda is recalling more than 300,000 vehicles over faulty seat belts. In a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday, the automaker said some front seat belts in 2023-2024 Accords and HR-Vs have missing pretensioner rivets. A pretensioner is the seat belt component that tightens it in place during an accident, preventing the seat occupant from flying forward. Defective pretensioners increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision, Honda said in the notice. In a safety recall report also filed with the NHTSA, Honda said it received the initial complaint about the seat belt issue in May.

The automakers said internal brake fluid leaks can cause an electrical short that could lead to a fire. Kia said the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) in the vehicles may experience an electrical short as a result of brake fluid leaks. Hyundai said the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short. The September recall covered 1.73 million Kia Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Sportage, K900, Optima, Soul Rio, Sorento and Rondo vehicles from various model years for each vehicle from 2010 through 2017.

The recall is the latest setback for GM's Cruise unit that faces growing questions about its technology that GM says it key to its growth plans. Cruise said last month it would halt operations nationwide after California regulators suspended the robotaxi operator's license, saying the Cruise self-driving vehicles were a risk to the public. Cruise is facing two federal investigations over the safety of its cars, including two incidents where the robot cars appeared not to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Cruise, the autonomous vehicle venture owned by General Motors , has issued a recall effecting 950 of its robotaxis following a pedestrian collision in San Francisco last month. The Oct. 2 collision triggered a federal probe. According to the Cruise filing with the NHTSA on Nov. 7, following the collision, Cruise found defects within its automated driving system software, specifically pertaining to its "Collision Detection Subsystem." This issue could occur after a collision with a pedestrian positioned low on the ground in the path of the AV." After Cruise lost its permits in California and faced a public backlash over safety concerns, the company also temporarily suspended production of its Cruise Origin driverless vans.

Adding decorations to a steering wheel can liven up a dull commute, and the internet now offers endless possibilities. Fuzzy steering wheel covers, stickers that look like diamonds or embroidered flowers, and even steering wheel trays with room for electronics and food are all easy to find online. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this week that what may seem like a harmless decoration could cause a serious injury in a crash. A consumer alert issued by the agency on Monday warned drivers not to adorn their steering wheels with decorative emblem decals because in a crash they could come off and hurt someone. “In a crash, the force of a deploying airbag can turn the product into a projectile, resulting in serious injury or death,” the alert said.
