CNN —British tennis player Jack Draper won a grueling five-set match against American Marcos Giron at the Australian Open on Tuesday, then immediately raced to a courtside bin to throw up. It was Draper’s first-ever victory in the main draw of the Australian Open and set up a second-round match against another American – 14th seed Tommy Paul. It all started with a simple text message that, if Bryan Shelton’s memory serves him, went something like this:“That coulda got really interesting,” wrote his then-20-year-old son, Ben, moments after he won a fifth-set tiebreaker against Zhizhen Zhang at last year’s Australian Open, clinching that first-round match. Shelton did, however, recall the unreturnable serve he hit at 4-5, 30-40 down in the fifth set. Shelton left last year’s Australian Open, his first trip abroad, as a quarterfinalist after succumbing to his friend and fellow American Tommy Paul. By season’s end, Shelton had reached the semifinals at the United States Open alongside the world’s top three players — Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev — and cracked the ATP’s top 15. The young American had begun 2023, his first full year on tour, ranked barely inside the top 100.

CNN —About this time last year, Ben Shelton was an up-and-coming tennis player taking his first-ever trip outside the United States. It figures, then, that Shelton enters his second full season as a professional tennis player with weighty expectations. “There’s not one path for everybody, and I don’t think that my path is perfect, but it really worked for me,” says Shelton. I don’t feel like I have too many miles on my body yet.”On the court, Shelton is physical and powerful. I think I’m also more comfortable taking away time and coming forward to the net.

Insider Today: Big Tech goes on trial
  + stars: | 2023-09-12 | by ( Dan Defrancesco | )   time to read: +10 min
Speaking of Big Tech, it's a big day for the industry as the DOJ's antitrust trial against Google starts today. It's also a strategy the Department of Justice argues is "anticompetitive and exclusionary" in a landmark trial for Big Tech kicking off today. The trial is the biggest to hit the tech industry since the government sued Microsoft in the late 1990s. AdvertisementAdvertisementMore broadly, the case is a bellwether for how the government could argue future cases against Big Tech companies in the modern era. Each case is unique, but their focus on monopolistic behavior means the Google trial could set precedents followed by both sides.

The veteran Djokovic held off a late-match surge from the 20-year-old to reach his 10th U.S. Open final before he mimed answering the phone - and hanging up - to subvert the viral post-win gesture that Shelton has used in New York. "I just love Ben's celebration," Djokovic told reporters with a grin. "I think if you win the match, you deserve to do whatever you want," said Shelton. "It's kind of like I'm saying I'm dialed in," Shelton explained earlier in the tournament, when asked about the celebration. A lot of positives to take away for the rest of the year and going into next year," said Shelton.

For the first time since 2005, three Americans have progressed to the quarterfinals of the men’s draw. Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are the trio still harboring dreams of winning a home grand slam. I’m not going to do anything different because I’m playing Novak,” he told reporters after reaching the quarterfinal. “He’s going to come after me, and I’m going to come after him.

CNN —Jessica Pegula advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a hard fought 6-4 4-6 6-2 victory over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, continuing the impressive performances of American players at their home tournament. 3 seed will now face her compatriot Madison Keys for a place in the quarterfinals after Keys completed a 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory over Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in her own third-round match. She really picked up her level and forced me to go after that third set.”Remarkably, Pegula has also reached the fourth round in both the doubles and mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows. Robert Prange/Getty ImagesPeyton Stearns will also join her compatriots in the fourth round after she defeated Britain’s Katie Boulter to reach this stage of a grand slam for the first time in her career. But with Pegula, Keys, Stearns and Coco Gauff all reaching the fourth round and with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton all still in contention in the men’s draw, American tennis seems to be flourishing again.

She's still a really fit player," Gauff said of the 33-year-old former world number one before their fourth-round match. I know she's watched tennis when she was retired. But I kind of accept that all these players they're going to play the best tennis against me." It is the first time since 2011 that four American men have reached the U.S. Open fourth round. An all-American clash kicked off the action on Arthur Ashe with 14th seed Paul taking on 20-year-old Shelton in a rematch of their Australian Open quarter-final. Down two sets and 4-1 in third and staring at the exit, Paul fought back to prevent a rout but Shelton would not be denied, avenging his four set loss in Australia. Paul would use two late breaks to win the third but there would be no way back against Shelton who held steady, breaking his compatriot to take the fourth set 6-4 and seal the win.
