The judge presiding over Donald Trump's New York hush money trial on Friday postponed the sentencing that was scheduled for next week to allow for more time for arguments on whether the case should be dismissed. “Just as a sitting President is completely immune from any criminal process, so too is President Trump as President-elect,” Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove argued in a filing Wednesday. Trump last week said he plans to nominate Blanche and Bove for high-ranking posts at the Justice Department in his new administration. Prosecutors in Manhattan said they would challenge Trump’s efforts to dismiss the hush money case but acknowledged that his sentencing might need to take place after he leaves office. The case was the only one of four criminal cases brought against Trump after he left office in 2021 to go to trial.

Sexual misconduct allegations against Matt Gaetz had drawn scrutiny after Mr. Trump said he wanted to nominate him for attorney general. Mr. Trump moved quickly to replace Mr. Gaetz with another conservative favorite. Federal prosecutors ultimately dropped the case against Mr. Gaetz, but their chart of payments was obtained by the ethics committee, which was investigating whether Mr. Gaetz had sex with the woman when she was underage. After she turned 18, Mr. Gaetz paid for sex with her on at least two other occasions, the person said. Mr. Trump seemed attracted to Mr. Gaetz as attorney general especially because of the former congressman’s willingness to blow things up.

President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday he will nominate Todd Blanche, one of his criminal defense lawyers, to be deputy attorney general. Blanche is the second of two Trump attorneys believed to be targeted by foreign hackers. Chinese hackers have also targeted other top figures in Trump’s orbit, including Trump himself and the vice president-elect, Sen. JD Vance. The sophisticated hacking effort has unnerved national security officials because of the deep access that the Chinese hackers have gotten to prominent Americans’ call and phone records. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, for example, has directed its employees to only use Microsoft Teams and Cisco WebEx to conduct work-related business involving non-public information, a CFPB spokesperson told CNN on Thursday. There is no evidence that the CFPB has been specifically targeted by the hackers, the spokesperson said.

CNN —New York’s highest court has declined to hear Donald Trump’s appeal on the gag order in his hush money case, according to a decision list posted Tuesday. The gag order, issued by Judge Juan Merchan in the criminal case against Trump, remains in effect. Separately, Trump has asked Merchan to terminate the gag order ahead of his sentencing scheduled for July. Once that motion is filed, the court will again make a decision on whether to hear the case. If the Court of Appeals did find the gag order unconstitutional, Trump’s attorneys wrote it would “undermine the justification” for the fines Trump received for his violations.
