Opinion | Sheryl Sandberg Screams Back at the Silence

There is a scene in “Screams Before Silence,” the harrowing documentary about the rape and mutilation of Israeli women on Oct. 7, that I can’t get out of my head. It’s an interview that the former Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, the documentary’s presenter, conducted with Ayelet Levy Sachar, the mother of 19-year-old Naama Levy, whose kidnapping that morning was filmed by Hamas. But then you just see it there.”To have a child seized, savaged and paraded this way goes beyond a parent’s worst nightmare. “You can believe that Gaza is happening because Israel has no choice; you can believe that Gaza is happening because Israel wants to kill babies. And you should also be able to hold the thought that sexual violence is unacceptable, no matter what.”

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 21: Bill Gates, Founder of Breakthrough Energy and Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, speaks onstage at The New York Times Climate Forward Summit 2023 at The Times Center on September 21, 2023 in New York City. Optimism and pessimism are hard to deal with. Optimism and pessimism seem like conflicting mindsets, so it's more common for people to prefer one or the other. Successful people find a balance between pessimism and optimismBill Gates is a great example of how effective this hidden skill is. What Gates seems to get is that you can only be an optimism in the long run if you're pessimistic enough to survive the short run.

"Republicans for climate change action are gold," said Bill Gates, the billionaire climate philanthropist and investor, on Thursday at the Climate Forward event in New York City. The number of Republicans convinced that responding to climate change is a priority has "got to be a number that we manage to increase over time," Gates said. That's because climate change mitigation and adaptation will require sustained investment and support from the public and private sector, Gates said. Almost eight in ten Democrats, 78%, consider climate change a major threat, up from 58% ten years ago. Only 23% of Republicans consider climate change a major threat, almost equivalent to the 22% of Republicans who considered climate change a major threat a decade ago.

loadingThe NYTimes NewsGuild last week had pledged to walk out on Dec. 8 if a contract was not reached by then. The union said the New York Times during a meeting earlier in the day refused to meet for additional negotiating sessions to resolve the contract dispute by Thursday. The New York Times in an emailed statement to Reuters said the union's claims were inaccurate and negotiations were ongoing. The union said that the walkout would be the first full-day work stoppage at the New York Times since the late 1970s. Tech employees of the Times voted last March to unionize and have been trying separately to negotiate their first contract.
