CNN —Syrian rebels have launched a large-scale attack on regime forces in western Aleppo, according to a Free Syrian Army source and local residents, marking the first major flare-up in years between both sides. Rebels seized 13 villages, including the strategic towns of Urm Al-Sughra and Anjara, as well as Base 46, the largest Syrian regime base in western Aleppo, according to a Wednesday statement by opposition factions. It added that 37 people from the regime forces and allied militia were killed in the offensive. Wednesday’s surprise attack marks the first significant conflagration between Syrian rebels and the regime since March 2020, when Russia and Turkey mediated a ceasefire agreement in the country. The opposition factions conducting the offensive range from Islamic groups to the moderate Free Syrian Army, which was previously supported by the US and Turkey.

TEL AVIV — The Israeli government failed in its “primary duty to protect its citizens” in the lead-up to and during the Oct. 7, terrorist attacks, according to an Israeli civilian report released Tuesday. Some 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage during the attacks as Hamas fighters infiltrated Israel from southern Gaza and launched thousands of rockets. An ethnic minority army that is part of a formidable rebel alliance fighting Myanmar’s ruling military has announced its willingness to hold talks with the junta after a yearlong battle along the Myanmar-China border. So, we need to find a way out,” TNLA spokesperson Lway Yay Oo said. The other two groups in the alliance, the Arakan Army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The rebel alliance had previously reached a ceasefire in January with Myanmar’s military during China-mediated talks, but the deal collapsed in June and fighting resumed. Myanmar’s parallel administration, the National Unity Government, said Beijing must consider the desires of Myanmar’s people when getting involved in the country’s crisis.

A senior Russian commander who was responsible for troops fighting in eastern Ukraine has been removed from his position, according to reports from several Kremlin-aligned news outlets. Anashkin’s appointment as commander of the army's Southern Group had never been officially announced by the ministry. The Russian news outlet RBC reported that Anashkin was dismissed as part of a “planned rotation,” citing anonymous sources within the Defense Ministry on Saturday. However, Rybar, a popular Telegram channel close to the ministry, reported that Anashkin was “removed from his post for false reports in the Seversk direction,” using the Russian version of the region's name. CNN —Russia has removed a senior commander from his post for making false claims about the progress of the war in parts of eastern Ukraine, according to military bloggers and Russian media. Ukrainian forces are facing “one of the most powerful Russian offensives” since the start of the war on the frontlines, according to Ukraine’s army chief. Some bloggers claim that false reports made by several commanders about the situation on the ground have led to heavy losses among Russian units. Military bloggers have become a key source of information since Russian’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Many have deep sources within the state’s armed forces or among pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

CNN —President Vladimir Putin said Friday that Russia will continue to test and start mass-producing the hypersonic ballistic missile that it fired at Ukraine Thursday. The firing of the missile came after the White House authorized Ukraine to fire its long-range missiles into Russia. In a televised meeting with the leadership of Russia’s defense ministry, Putin claimed the missile could not be intercepted by air defenses and said Russia will begin serial production of the new weapon. Putin added Russia was developing “several similar systems” for further testing. Putin’s comments come a day after Russia fired the “Oreshnik” missile – which contains multiple warheads – at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

Some major tech companies including Meta are taking steps to combat “pig butchering” scams, which trick Americans out of billions of dollars each year through fake online friendships and romances. Pig butchering scams are elaborate and often take months to unfold. Meta on Thursday announced it has taken its first major steps into addressing the scams, including dedicating staff to identify where scammers operate, sharing that information with international law enforcement, and taking down more than 2 million accounts this year. The announcement reflects how more tech companies are recognizing the severity of pig butchering scams. Calling themselves the Tech Against Scams coalition, the companies pledged to share scammer information with each other and better educate users.

Ukraine on Thursday accused Russia of launching an intercontinental ballistic missile as part of an overnight attack, in what would be the first use of such a weapon during the conflict. Ukrainian forces also used British-supplied long-range Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia for the first time on Wednesday, the Kremlin said. Moscow on Thursday launched an intercontinental ballistic missile at Ukraine for the first time, Kyiv said. But this kind of a strike might have a value as a signal,” said nuclear forces expert Pavel Podvig. Russian forces have seized the momentum in recent months and eked out a succession of territorial gains, particularly on the eastern front lines.

AdvertisementOfficials in two Russian regions have said public bodies won't be holding New Year's parties this year. The regions said that they're planning to redirect funds to the war in Ukraine instead, per reports. The governments of several Russian regions have decided not to hold New Year's parties, with many proposing to allocate savings to funding the war in Ukraine, according to multiple reports. The Buryatia region's Telegram account proposed using the saved funds for those participating in the war, and encouraged others to do the same. There are signs that Russia's public sector is under strain, with large layoffs planned in 2025.

Ukraine says Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile overnight targeting Dnipro city in the central-east of the country, which, if confirmed, would be the first time Moscow has used such a missile in the war. It said an intercontinental ballistic missile was fired at Dnipro city along with eight other missiles, and that the Ukrainian military shot down six of them. The attack comes two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a revised nuclear doctrine that formally lowers the threshold for the country's use of nuclear weapons. Ukraine on Tuesday fired several American-supplied longer-range missiles and reportedly fired U.K.-made Storm Shadows on Wednesday into Russia. While the doctrine envisions a possible nuclear response by Russia to a conventional strike, it is formulated broadly to avoid a firm commitment to use nuclear weapons and keep Putin's options open.

CNN —Ukraine’s military has accused Russia of firing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into its territory for the first time, marking what would be another significant escalation in the 1,000-day-old war. Despite Kyiv’s accusation, two Western officials said that the missile launched by Russia was a ballistic missile, but not an ICBM. Ukraine’s air force accused Russia of launching an intercontinental ballistic missile at Dnipro at around 5 a.m. local time, from the Astrakhan region of southern Russia. The United States said Wednesday that its embassy in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, had closed after receiving "specific information of a potential significant air attack." "Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy will be closed, and Embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place," it said in a security alert, recommending U.S. citizens take shelter if an air alert is announced. Shutting the embassy is not an unprecedented move amid the war, which reached its 1,000th day Tuesday. Searchlights look for Russian drones in the skies over Kyiv, in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Moscow could justify a nuclear strike if subject to an attack by a nonnuclear country that is supported by a nuclear country, according to the revised doctrine.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —It is a very specific and high-profile warning, so you would expect the information behind it to have been quite precise. The US Embassy in Kyiv has not closed since it relocated during the opening months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But on Wednesday, it announced a one-day closure, citing “specific information of a potential significant air attack.” Kyiv endures air attacks on an almost nightly basis – but the US step suggested a fear of being potentially targeted. Ukrainian defense officials even derided a fake warning circulated widely on Telegram claiming a massive Russian air attack, as being crude Russian-produced misinformation. Residents in Kyiv struggled to reconcile the specific nature of the US warnings, with the quotidian daily threat they face.

CNN —Ukraine launched the British-French-made Storm Shadow missiles at targets inside Russia for the first time on Wednesday, according to a Russian military blog and Reuters, a day after Ukraine fired US-made ATACMS missiles into Russia. When Umerov was asked if Ukraine used the Storm Shadow missiles to hit a target inside Russia, he replied, “we are using all the means to defend our country, so we’ll not go into detail. A weapons expert who reviewed the video for CNN said there are no indications the explosions are from a different type of munition, but it’s not possible to definitively say they are from Storm Shadow missiles. The UK and France have previously supplied the long-range Storm Shadow missiles for Ukraine to use inside its own borders. Ukraine used eight long-range US missiles to successfully hit an ammunition depot deep inside Russia, according to two US defense officials.

Investigators in Russia are looking into the death of Vladimir Shklyarov, a principal dancer at the world-famous Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, after he fell from an apartment block balcony and died at the age of 39. Police in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second city, say initial information suggests his fall, which was discovered early on Saturday morning, was the result of an accident, state media have reported. Shklyarov was famous outside Russia too, having danced at the Royal Ballet in London and at the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich. “He went out onto the balcony to get some air and smoke, lost his balance (it’s a very narrow balcony) and fell (from the fifth floor). The father of two young children was reportedly divorced from his ballerina wife Maria Shirinkina, a first soloist at the Mariinsky.

But price rises in Russia are eye-watering by comparison – and just one symptom of an economy that is overheating. “Prices are rising because of the war,” Alexandra Prokopenko at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin told CNN. The military budget will rise by nearly a quarter in 2025, amounting to one-third of all state spending and 6.3 per cent of gross domestic product. Analysts don’t see the Russian economy as tumbling over a precipice but instead as a slowly gathering crisis. Russia has traditionally turned to central Asia for unskilled labor, and Putin recently suggested more foreign workers are needed.
