Of the 175 key ETFs that we track, just one made a new all-time high on Tuesday – the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) . IGV, thus, was the first major technology ETF to hit new highs after a very turbulent past few months. Before Tuesday, IGV's last all-time high happened way back in November 21 (nearly three years ago), when the ETF hit an intra-day high of $89.76. For some context, while the SPDR Technology ETF (XLK) hit a low on the same day in November 202222, its snapback unfolded much more quickly. XLK hit a new all-time high way back in July 2023 and has kept going.

Why health care could be a winner heading into year-end

Health care may be the answer, if history is any indication. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) has posted a November gain in eight of the last 10 years. Health care trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22.2, while the S & P 500 has a multiple of 24. The optimism around health care comes as the sector lags the broader market. Some health care names poised to do well, according to Krinsky, are Masimo and Viking Therapeutics .

AI investment potential remains high, akin to 1996 in the internet's rise, says Bank of America. Considering how much the web has grown since then, this analogy means the potential gains from AI stocks aren't yet fully priced in. As for the widespread use of AI, the bank forecasts early-stage adoption will begin in 2025 for 44% of S&P 500 companies that discussed AI during their second-quarter earnings. AdvertisementInvestors can also choose to take the stock-picking route or buy ETFs packaged with AI stocks. Even with recent rotation away from megacap tech stocks, there may still be a case for investing in thematic tech exchange-traded funds. Roundhill Investments runs the Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF (CHAT), which is up 13.8% year to date as of Friday's market close. But despite recent volatility in the group, the firm's CEO Dave Mazza thinks the investment thesis is still intact. Pointing to some of CHAT's under-the-radar artificial intelligence plays, Mazza waived off concerns that thematic ETFs may be too narrow in scope. "There are companies like Dell in the portfolio and others, ServiceNow and Salesforce , who are using AI and integrating AI," he said.

The secular megatrend of AI remains strong as Big Tech companies continue to invest billions into developing the technology. Forward earnings estimates for the tech sector are rising to all-time highs, indicating continued optimism. Investor expectations have now become recalibrated after the correction, providing tech stocks with more room to grow, in Lerner's opinion. AdvertisementTruistA cooling macroeconomic environment will also provide a boost to tech stocks as investors flock back to Big Tech, according to Lerner. With the Fed likely to begin cutting rates in September, many of the Big Tech companies are poised to benefit.

Bank of AmericaEven though clients sold off individual small-cap stocks, they're not shying away from that size segment of the market at all. Clients invested more money in small-cap ETFs than large-cap ones, providing small-caps with the biggest boost since May of this year. The best-performing exchange-traded funds in the second half will likely be decided by broader shifts in the markets and economy. Even with mounting uncertainty, however, there are some types of ETFs that could emerge as winners. Equities A handful of stocks were big winners in the first half, and some narrowly focused ETFs were able to ride that wave. Single-stock funds tied to Nvidia have also seen heavy interest, including the GraniteShares 2x Long Nvidia ETF (NVDL) . However, Hougan said he didn't think that omission would be a big hurdle for ETF investors.

But investors focusing on those big three may be missing some compelling breakouts in the sector, according to the charts. Microsoft is up a pedestrian 10% since then, but combined, they've helped propel the SPDR Technology ETF (XLK) to a new all-time high. Indeed, there's nothing wrong with riding a trend, but many times a long uptrend starts with a pattern breakout. And starting in 2023, the following combination has produced the best results: rallying from a higher low as the stock's 14-day Relative Strength Index bottoms near 50. It's never perfect, but this setup has presented favorable risk-reward scenarios more often than not, and each ensuing bounce eventually resulted in higher highs.

The usual rebalancing of the S & P 500 index and the exchange traded funds around it is a quarterly event occurring Friday. There are exchange-traded funds that follow the broad market benchmark and ETFs that track the S & P 500 sector indexes, including technology. The S & P 500 indexes are pure indexes. Nvidia could become 99% of the S & P 500 by market capitalization, and it would be reflected in the index. This trio dominates the S & P 500 technology index.

At stake is one of the top two spots in the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) , whose June rebalance is based on market cap values as of Friday's close. The market caps of Microsoft, Apple and Nvidia were all within $100 billion of each other as of Thursday's close, according to a FactSet calculation. This type of big shift in an index fund is unusual, but not unprecedented. The fund tracks an index from S & P Dow Jones Indices that uses weighting caps to keep the index in bounds. U.S. stocks have been rather volatile in the past month, but in the past week they had a strong run on hopes of rate cuts. Tech stocks, which would be boosted by rate cuts, have been a big part of that rally — with Meta , Alphabet and Amazon in particular having a strong showing over the past couple of weeks. Elsewhere, analysts are getting more optimistic on China stocks, especially those in the tech sector. Kevin Liu, managing director and strategist at CICC Research, said his conviction call would be a structural barbell allocation with themes including tech names "with high-end upgrading opportunities," among others. Wall Street was mostly upbeat about equities heading into 2023, though even the most bullish investment firms thought the S&P 500 would finish this year at 5,100 — a level it has exceeded already. Resisting this rally is a fool's errand, according to David Keller, the chief market strategist at StockCharts.com. Biotechnology stocks have recently shown renewed strength, and improving momentum may just push these names toward the top of the leaderboard. Second, this level also represented a 38.2% retracement level based on the 2021 high and 2022 low, which is a widely followed support level based on the Fibonacci methodology. This week, IBB has bounced off that support level, making a new 52-week high as it briefly pushed above the 50% retracement level around $140. The weekly chart reinforces that biotechnology stocks may still be in the early stages of this advance, with lots of daylight between current levels and the 2021 highs. It's been a bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000, but the overall trend stays with big cap tech. Talk about timing: It launched just as the S & P 500 was recovering from the banking crisis, and MAGS has been one of the star ETF performers of the last year. A bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000 The S & P 500 had been comfortably over 4,000 from mid-2021 into mid-2022, when rising rates pushed the broad index below 4,000. This is true not just this year, but since the S & P went over 4,000 at the end of March, as has international investing. If you own the S & P 500, which has become tech-dominant, you are happy.

Rosenbluth lists the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF and the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Technology ETF as options for investors who want to reduce exposure to the "Magnificent Seven." "You own the same companies that you'd find within the S&P 500 or in the technology sector.
