DirecTV and Disney have reached a deal that brings Disney’s ESPN and other channels back to the pay-tv provider’s customers after a roughly two week blackout. On Saturday, DirecTV and Disney said they reached a deal that called for “market based terms” on pricing. DirecTV will be able to offer Disney’s streaming services in its packages and a la carte, the company said in a release Saturday. The amount of customers DirecTV lost during the dispute was not “immaterial,” said DirecTV Chief Marketing Officer Vince Torres at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia & Technology Conference on Thursday. DirecTV offered its customers a $30 credit, financed by stopping payments to Disney as soon as the blackout began, Torres said.

CNN —SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew is beginning its fifth day in orbit, having marked a few record-setting milestones on a historic journey — including the world’s first commercial spacewalk. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule during the first commercial spacewalk on Thursday. The Polaris Dawn mission's Crew Dragon capsule is seen Wednesday 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) above Earth — the farthest humans have traveled since the Apollo program over 50 years ago. The riskiest part of the journey may be over, but the Polaris Dawn crew still has a key milestone ahead: coming home. Disney's networks went dark on Sept. 1 after the two sides could not agree to terms on fees and bundle structures. DirecTV called Disney anti-consumer, and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro called the responses DirecTV made to Disney's package offers "basically hypotheticals." The amount of customers DirecTV lost during the dispute was not "immaterial," said DirecTV Chief Marketing Officer Vince Torres at Goldman Sachs' Communacopia & Technology Conference on Thursday. DirecTV offered its customers a $30 credit, financed by stopping payments to Disney as soon as the blackout began, Torres said. This was the second dispute in a year that left pay TV customers without Disney's networks.

"Our marketing team has done a great job of getting back into what we call the zeitgeist or being relevant again," Kevin Hochman, CEO of Chili's parent Brinker International , told CNBC. A viral social media presence and a push toward value-oriented advertising have propelled sales growth every quarter of fiscal 2024. The brand grew rapidly in the early 2000s, but in the decade that followed the Great Recession, Chili's U.S. locations declined and sales growth flattened. It made Chili's fun again," said Joe Wilson, managing partner of a Chili's in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Watch the video to learn more about how Chili's made a comeback.

Recent comments from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang seemed to revive investment in the turbulent AI sector this week, while leading portfolio managers to recenter attention on the winning trades. Nvidia shares rallied more than 8% on the heels of Huang's remarks, which soothed some recent market jitters over the delayed payoff from AI investments. For the week, AI and semiconductor names such as Advanced Micro Devices, Marvell Technology, Super Micro Computer and Broadcom rallied double digits. Even with recent rotation away from megacap tech stocks, there may still be a case for investing in thematic tech exchange-traded funds. Roundhill Investments runs the Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF (CHAT), which is up 13.8% year to date as of Friday's market close. But despite recent volatility in the group, the firm's CEO Dave Mazza thinks the investment thesis is still intact. Pointing to some of CHAT's under-the-radar artificial intelligence plays, Mazza waived off concerns that thematic ETFs may be too narrow in scope. "There are companies like Dell in the portfolio and others, ServiceNow and Salesforce , who are using AI and integrating AI," he said.

CNN —India’s second nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine joined its naval fleet late last month, a move the government says strengthens its nuclear deterrent as New Delhi casts a wary eye at both China and Pakistan. The de facto border between India and China, known as the Line of Actual Control, has been a longtime flashpoint between the two. India’s next ballistic missile subs could be years away, however, if history is any predictor of the future. Arighaat was launched almost seven years ago, and if that timeline from launch to commissioning applies to the next Indian ballistic missile sub, it won’t join the service until 2030. As one VC partner told Business Insider at the time: "Sam is bigger than Taylor Swift." But the bigger you are, the faster the fall, and a few months later, things began to unravel. Others simply said Altman was overhyped, that he didn't have all the answers that the public and investors seemed to expect of him. Thanks to good old-fashioned capitalism, Altman and OpenAI have enjoyed business win after win and held their positions as the leaders in the aggressive AI race. "I thought Sam Altman did a really good job in the special," she told The Washington Post in a discussion about her TV program on artificial intelligence.

I wanted to work in technology, and I wanted to work in business, so I went to get an MBA, as many people do. Coming out of Cornell's business school in 1999, I had a choice between traditional routes like consulting or brand management. Since then, I've spent 25 years working in leadership roles at tech companies, including Yahoo, Google, and Facebook. Sometimes, a demotion might be the right moveAt various stages in my career, I've had those kinds of crossroad moments. So, I'm teaching people how to scale companies while I'm scaling my own company, and I'm teaching people how to be great leaders while I'm building a company that helps people be great leaders.

Top bosses at Berkshire Hathaway are usually tight-lipped about their market outlook, but recent investment actions from the executives are saying a lot. News broke earlier this week that Ajit Jain, the conglomerate's insurance chief for nearly 40 years, sold more than half of his Berkshire stake worth $139 million. That marked the biggest sale of Berkshire stock by the 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations since he was hired by Warren Buffett in 1986. He believes it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. But the magnitude of the sales could also suggest a bearish attitude toward the market and stock valuations.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump lashed out at Nasdaq over a routine trading halt in shares of his social media company and even threatened to move the listing to the New York Stock Exchange. “Why is NASDAQ halting the sale of DJT?” Trump said Friday on Truth Social, referring to the ticker symbol of Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group. For Trump Media (DJT), the first halt occurred at 2:26 p.m. Nasdaq explained the halts were caused by what’s known as limit up-limit down, rules designed to “protect investors and the public interest.”Even though all of this appeared to be routine, Trump threatened to punish Nasdaq. “I am going to hold NASDAQ, and maybe the SEC, liable for doing what they are doing,” he said in his Truth Social post.

Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.

During Tuesday’s presidential debate, former President Donald Trump repeated unfounded claims that Haitian immigrants “are eating dogs and cats … eating people’s pets” in Springfield, Ohio. “The fact that Donald Trump wants to double down on something so ridiculous just breaks my heart again,” Smith said. The rumor follows years of insults hurled at Haitians and Haitian Americans, including unfounded claims of cannibalism, and Trump’s hostility toward Haitian immigrants during his administration. “I work every day with Haitian immigrants, and no one works as hard as them,” he said. “It’s really unreal.”On social media, Haitians have expressed disgust about the depiction, while others “won’t even entertain something so crazy,” Smith said.

The Justice Department plans to file criminal charges in the hacking of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, two law enforcement officials told NBC News. The Trump campaign announced in August that it had been hacked. Later that month, federal officials said that Iran was behind the effort, which was part of an apparent hack-and-leak operation to spread files stolen from Trump’s campaign. Federal officials reiterated in a press call last week that the U.S. intelligence community believes Iran wants to hurt former President Trump’s campaign, whereas Russia wants to boost Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. Google was more specific, and said that the hackers had gone after both the Trump campaign and President Joe Biden’s before he dropped out of the race.

And when that happens, he’s got another project, Worldcoin, in the works to help fix it. To do that, it’s using its proprietary, basketball-ball sized “orbs” that scan people’s eyeballs and create a unique, immutable code based on the pattern of their irises. The pilots of a FedEx cargo plane couldn’t see the runway or the airfield at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. On Thursday, another near-miss was added to the list when an Alaska Airlines plane and a Southwest plane nearly collided in Nashville. In some cases, hero pilots such as Bradeen and Carvajal have kept collision courses from turning deadly. But about three miles out from landing, they grew uneasy when an air traffic controller cleared the Southwest flight to take off in front of them. The pilots’ awareness was heightened, but Bradeen said he didn’t realize a collision was imminent until about 100 or 150 feet away.

Aytug Can Sencar | Anadolu | Getty ImagesLONDON — The U.K. government has had "constructive" talks with Elon Musk's social media site X over the spread of misinformation and other harmful content, technology minister Peter Kyle told CNBC Friday. Multiple social media users at the time spread false information about the alleged perpetrator, who has since been charged with murder and attempted murder, claiming he was an asylum seeker. The minister also told CNBC he is assessing whether he needs additional powers to regulate social media companies over the dissemination of harmful content online. A government spokesperson told CNBC earlier this year that its "immediate focus is getting the Online Safety Act implemented quickly and effectively." For the past year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been trying to convince the world that he can be trusted to lead the people to the next frontier of artificial intelligence. In it, she speaks to key figures of the tech industry, including Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, about the impacts of AI. AdvertisementThroughout the interview, Altman could be seen listening intently to Winfrey's simple but direct line of questioning. One of the points Winfrey pressed Altman on was that of public trust. Winfrey also asked Altman how he feels about being billed "the most powerful and perhaps most dangerous man on the planet."

The First Matabele War, fought between 1893 and 1894, foretold the future. The brutal era of trench warfare the Maxim gun ushered in only became fully apparent in World War I. Like other unmanned vehicles that aim for a high level of autonomy, these Russian drones don’t rely on large language models or similar A.I. Hezbollah’s alleged use of explosive-laden drones has displaced at least 60,000 Israelis south of the Lebanon border. And in the attacks of Oct. 7, Hamas used quadcopter drones — which probably used some A.I.
