Republican Tim Sheehy has defeated Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in Montana, NBC News projects, deepening the GOP’s projected Senate majority after the party's wins in West Virginia and Ohio. Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, defeated the three-term senator by consolidating Republican voters in a state that has turned a deeper shade of red in recent years. Sheehy and his allies cast Tester as a liberal Democrat who votes with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, undercutting the incumbent’s reputation as a centrist. But Democrats were cautiously optimistic that Montana voters would look at the presidential race and the Senate race through different lenses. While Sheehy had said he would respect Montana voters’ decision on the issue, he appeared open to supporting federal action on abortion, which Democrats exploited on the campaign trail and on the airwaves.

Mitt Romney won more than 80% in Forsyth in 2012, but Trump won just two-thirds of the vote there eight years later. In 2020, Joe Biden won this county by only 4 points over Trump, while Hillary Clinton carried it by 13 points in 2016. While Trump won it by 3 points in 2016, Biden won Maricopa by 2 points four years later. And that Democratic gain helped the party flip Wisconsin in 2020, given that Biden won the state by just 20,000 votes.

And some specifically panned the the racist and demeaning rhetoric from Trump allies at last week's rally at Madison Square Garden, criticizing them for alienating Americans instead of bringing them together. Other voters derisively mentioned Harris' laughter, called Trump more "transparent in what he's looking to do," and cited their support for Trump economic policies like tariffs and not taxing overtime pay. For the Harris supporters who briefly, seriously, considered Trump, the former president's tone and demeanor looms large. Again, a handful of voters brought up the rally comments about Puerto Ricans when voters describing something that made them view Trump more negatively.

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and our retail stocks are well-positioned to thrive, according to Wall Street research firm Telsey Advisory Group. Telsey Advisory expects value-seeking to be a key theme among shoppers this year, which puts companies with reputations for good deals on solid ground. Overall, the firm expects holiday retail sales up between 3% to 3.5% this year, compared with 4.6% growth last year and a 5.4% increase in 2022. In NBC News’ early October national survey, just 4% of registered voters said they didn’t want to make a choice between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. One said they plan to vote for Trump, another that they are likely to vote for Harris, and another plans to not vote at all. How anyone could still be undecided a week out from a critical election can be difficult to fathom for supporters of either Trump or Harris. Eric Bush, a systems administrator from Florida, said he’s waiting until he is in the voting booth to make his final choice. But he is still weighing backing Harris, acknowledging a vote for Harris could lead to bigger-government policies that could help others.
