The results of the study, published Thursday in the journal Science, surprised whale researchers because they suggest the creatures can hear at much higher frequencies than expected. Scientists had never captured baleen whales and tested their hearing before because the animals are so large it could be dangerous to both the whales and researchers. Scientists know, from recordings and other observations, that baleen whales rely on hearing for social communication and that it’s important to their survival. Minke whales were a good target for audio testing because they’re the smallest baleen whale and a species whose hearing scientists don’t understand very well. He said the Minke Whale Hearing Project is on hold, but he’d like to pursue the topic further if he could secure funding.

CNN —For Donald Trump, every defeat is just the catalyst for his next battle. The Gaetz disaster suggests that despite his big election win, some laws of political gravity still apply to Trump. This may explain why two-and-a-half weeks into his transition, several of Trump’s Cabinet picks are embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct, ethics or legal controversy. The bipartisan House Ethics Committee deadlocked Wednesday on whether to release a report on its investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and other wrongdoing by former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz. Ethics Chair Michael Guest, R-Miss., told reporters after the closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill, "There has been no agreement to release the report." She stressed that the vote in the 10-member committee, which is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, fell along partisan lines. In September he said he would no longer voluntarily participate in the ethics probe, while revealing that the committee had asked him whether he ever "engaged in sexual activity with any individual under 18." Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee urged the FBI earlier Wednesday to turn over all the evidence it had gathered from its investigation into Gaetz.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Susan Smith, who shocked the nation 30 years ago when she rolled her car into a lake with her two children inside and watched them drown, will ask a parole board Wednesday to release her from prison. Almost 30 years ago to the day, Susan Smith made international headlines when she said she was carjacked late at night near Union, South Carolina, by a Black man. Smith, now 53, has had an eventful three decades behind bars in South Carolina, including multiple disciplinary actions.
