A lottery is being held on Monday to determine who will be the 16 people who get to witness what happens next in the case of the Menendez Brothers, who are serving life sentences for murdering their parents in 1989. The drawing will take place between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Pacific time, in front of the Van Nuys Courthouse West, the Superior Court of Los Angeles County said. The seats for 16 people, in a county of more than 10 million residents, will be allocated just one hour before the status hearing is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The court occasionally holds public lotteries “when seating is limited and public interest is high,” a court spokesperson said in an email. North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to strip the state’s incoming Democratic governor and attorney general of key powers, passing a sweeping bill before the GOP likely loses their veto-proof supermajority in the Legislature next year. That power currently lies with the governor's office, which will remain in Democratic hands after Attorney General Josh Stein defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Republicans have long sought control of the state Board of Elections, which is historically controlled by the same party as the current governor, but their past efforts have been foiled by the courts. That means they would be unable to override any future vetos from Stein without Democratic support. Stein is succeeding outgoing Cooper, whose administration repeatedly clashed with the Republican-led Legislature in the battleground state.

Riley’s family cried and multiple gasps and sobs were heard in the courtroom when the first guilty decision was announced. The defense questioned the quality of that DNA evidence and its analysis. In addition, a blood-like stain on a navy blue jacket found in a dumpster contained the DNA of Riley and Ibarra, Hinkle testified. CNN —An anonymous male celebrity says he is the victim of an extortion scheme and is suing a high-powered Texas attorney who is representing several people in civil lawsuits that accuse Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual assault. Buzbee has said he is representing at least 120 alleged victims of Combs. The lawsuit filed by the anonymous celebrity claims that Buzbee’s firm is trying to capitalize off the “explosive allegations against Sean Combs” by roping in public figures who have been acquainted with Combs. In an interview with CNN last month, Buzbee explained that his firm initially files cases anonymously in an effort to protect the safety of his clients. “It is a cynical extortion scheme that is dressed up in vindicating victims of actual sexual abuse,” the lawsuit states.

Ukraine can defeat Russia if it and its Western backers learn from America's failure in the Vietnam War, a Ukrainian security expert argues. Danylyuk attributes America's failure in Vietnam to a "protracted multi-dimensional strategy by the Soviet Union, on whose help it was completely dependent." Crucial ways to defeat Russia's invasion can be found in the Soviet Union's multi-pronged strategy in Vietnam, analyst Oleksandr Danylyuk says. AP Photo/John T. WheelerThe first prong of this strategy would be to "stabilize the frontline and to render any successful offensive actions by Russian troops impossible." "The only explanation for the lack of a mass anti-war movement and large-scale protests is the absence of an organized and popular opposition in Russia," Danylyuk said.

PHOENIX — Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego will be Arizona’s first Latino senator next year, NBC News projects, after he defeated Republican Kari Lake amid a protracted vote count in one of the key swing states. Trump won the state in 2016 and won it again this year by what appears to be his biggest margin in any of the core swing states. But he kept his message homed on the issues behind those identities, linking them to border security, comprehensive immigration reform and expanded mental health services for veterans. Gallego focused on his party’s strengths, like reproductive rights, but he also tried to tackle his party’s weaknesses head-on, advertising on issues like border security. Lake tried to tie Gallego to Biden and his administration on a host of issues, but especially border security, a key focus of hers during their lone debate in October.
