CNN —Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday launched a Senate investigation into working and safety conditions at Amazon warehouses, adding to federal scrutiny on the labor practices of one of the country’s largest employers. In 2018, following heavy criticism from Sanders, Amazon announced it was raising its minimum wage for US employees to $15 an hour. In his letter Tuesday, Sanders argued that Amazon warehouses “are uniquely dangerous,” and cited recent citations from the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration against Amazon. After inspecting three Amazon warehouse facilities, OSHA issued hazard letters in January related to injury risks from workers lifting packages. An Amazon spokesperson at the time said the company “strongly” disagrees with OSHA’s claims and intends to appeal.

Amazon's warehouse working conditions, which have come under increased scrutiny in recent years, are now at the heart of a congressional probe that's being led by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Steve Kelly, an Amazon spokesperson, told CNBC in a statement that the company has received Sanders' letter and is in the early stages of reviewing it. The HELP committee posted a form on its website seeking testimonials from current and former Amazon employees about their experiences at the company. Amazon faces ongoing federal probes into its safety record beyond the Senate's actions. Amazon says it's made progress on reducing injuries across its U.S. operations, and continues to invest in safety initiatives, projects and programs.

Amazon has started charging a fee to return some products to UPS Stores. Amazon joins a growing list of retailers starting to charge customers to send products back. "We always offer a free option for customers to return their item," Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly told Insider by email. Retailers are losing millions of dollars every year processing all those returns, which has made several companies rethink the standard of free returns — a standard that, ironically, some experts attribute to Amazon. Now, with its new fee, Amazon joins the growing list of retailers starting to charge customers to ship their stuff back.

Syed was convicted of killing 18-year-old ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, whose body was found buried in Baltimore’s Leakin Park in 1999. Family attorney Steve Kelly said Lee's survivors do not believe Baltimore prosecutors will opt for another trial. “The family has very little hope at this point, they are not hopeful that anybody will ever face justice for Hae’s murder,” Kelly said Tuesday. Mosby's hedged comments belie court action moments earlier when her own prosecutor eviscerated the state's successful murder case against Syed. Trial prosecutors did not properly turn over evidence to defense lawyers that could have helped them show someone else killed Lee, Phinn said. Judge Phinn gave the state 30 days to decide whether to seek a new trial or potentially stop the case. "I was kind of blindsided," Lee told the court. After Syed, now 42, was sentenced to life behind bars in 2000, his case gained national notoriety from the 2014 podcast "Serial."

City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn said prosecutors made a compelling argument that Syed's convicted was flawed. She vacated murder, kidnapping, robbery and false imprisonment against Syed. Maryland prosecutors last week asked to vacate Syed's conviction and for a new trial, saying they lacked "confidence in the integrity" of the verdict. "This is real life, of a never ending nightmare for 20-plus years," the brother told the court via Zoom.
