Flood warnings are in effect Wednesday night for parts of Broward, Miami-Dade, Collier and Hendry counties through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service, which warned “life-threatening flooding” was ongoing. “Many areas are inundated with water w/ stalled cars & more rainfall is on the way,” the weather service said Wednesday night. @Signia70/ XWhile the state is no stranger to drenching rain, heavy rain events are getting even heavier as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution. A boomer and her husband moved to southwest Florida from Minnesota to start her clothing business. They moved to southern Minnesota, then northern Minnesota to an off-the-grid cabin an hour north of Duluth. They knew northern Minnesota was not conducive to starting a business, so they considered Florida an ideal location. Such recruitment-based adoptions are the most difficult to carry out, social workers say. Gonzaga, who worked with his wife Heather Setrakian at eharmony and then on the Family-Match algorithm, referred questions to Ramirez. Social workers say Family-Match works like this: Adults seeking to adopt submit survey responses via the algorithm’s online platform, and foster parents or social workers input each child’s information. Adoption-Share is part of a small cadre of organizations that say their algorithms can help social workers place children with foster or adoptive families. “It’s wasted time for social workers and wasted emotional experiences for children.”___Contact AP’s global investigative team at Investigative@ap.org or https://www.ap.org/tips/

CNN —Spirit Airlines says its flight schedule could be impacted for days as it scrambles to perform “a necessary inspection of a small section of 25 of our aircraft.”As of 2:45 p.m. EDT, the ultra-low-cost carrier has canceled 98 flights, or 11% of its schedule for Friday, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. The site also showed that Spirit has canceled another 81 flights, or 9% of its schedule, on Saturday. “While this action is being taken out of an abundance of caution, the impact to our network is expected to last several days as we complete the inspections and work to return to normal operations,” Spirit said in a statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to take care of affected guests.”Spirit has not specified the type of inspections that needs to take place, though FlightAware data shows almost all the cancellations involve Spirit’s Airbus A319 aircraft. Flights departing from airports such as Atlantic City, Hartsfield-Jackson, Nashville, Boston Logan, Baltimore/Washington, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston Bush, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Orlando, Chicago O’Hare, Southwest Florida, and Tampa have been impacted.

Researchers analyzed global flood hazard datasets and annual settlement footprint data covering the three decades between 1985 and 2015 to understand the populations most affected by flood risk. They found over this period, as the world’s settlements grew by 85%, urbanization happened much more rapidly in high-hazard flood zones than in areas with low flood risk. In 2015, more than 11% of built-up areas globally faced high or very high flood risk, meaning areas at risk of flooding depths of at least 50 cm (17 inches) during 1-in-100-year flooding events, according to the report. Upper-middle income countries had the largest proportion of new human settlements in the highest flood risk zones, the report found. “This is concerning as development patterns are enhancing risk without climate change – climate change will further exacerbate these risks in the future.”

Just down the island’s main road, the Red Coconut R.V. For most homes in Fort Myers Beach, this means that rebuilding what was there before Ian isn’t an option. For a hotel development like Margaritaville, the building codes helped it weather Ian with damage from which it could recover. That means existing property owners like those of the Silver Sands, Red Coconut and countless private homes end up cutting their losses and selling. They’re also banking on the infinite desirability of the beachfront, as are the state authorities responsible for the building codes that allow redevelopment after hurricanes and floods.

He acknowledged he doesn’t have “stellar credit,” which is known to impact car insurance rates. Darnell Coates-Clark saw his monthly car insurance rates double over the past two years.

How Burmese pythons got from Asia to FloridaThe first definitive recording of a Burmese python in the Florida Everglades was in 1979. "Then I just developed this mantra over the years of don't underestimate the Burmese python," he said. Pythons have invaded the Florida Everglades and proven a formidable invasive species that may never be fully eradicated. While state-regulated programs have removed over 13,700 snakes from the Florida Everglades, they're usually the ones found near roads and canal levees. The biggest question researchers need to answer is how many Burmese pythons are actually in Florida at the moment.

She became intrigued by land use changes, and then, gradually, by the links between climate change and sustainable food systems. Kolman, who grew up in Savannah, Ga., majored in physics and political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “I spent my time in undergrad searching for a career where I could use my analytical skills to improve society,” he told me. A trip to South Africa, which has dealt with successive droughts exacerbated by climate change, brought home “the impacts of water insecurity.”He considered working in public policy but those plans changed after the 2016 election. Kossoff, who calls herself the “most recent climate convert,” grew up mostly in southwest Florida and studied business and chemistry at Emory University.

The modern car shopping experience, from initial research to final purchase, can now be done online — and the pandemic accelerated that shift. Others are emulating firms like Carvana and moving some parts of the buying process online. We don't exactly know how the car business is going to look going forward with this EV shift, and how much the EV shift is actually going to take place." Ford has set stringent requirements for its dealers to sell EVs — though some dealers have called its EV certification program unfair and dropped out. Some dealers are having a hard time committing to changes when the return on investment — especially with EVs — isn't yet clear.
Researchers also estimated the U.S. could experience an annual loss of $18.5 billion from hurricane-force winds that would eventually rise to $20 billion in 2053. The mid-Atlantic region will experience the largest rise in maximum wind speeds, the report found. Inland states including Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee could see wind speeds rise from 87 mph to 97 mph during strong hurricanes. Residents in these states will likely be less prepared for future hikes in wind speeds, the report added. The projections also show that areas of Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia are at greater risk of destructive storm winds.
