An Arizona man has been arrested after he allegedly posted videos online that showed him brandishing an AR-15-style rifle and threatening to kill President-elect Donald Trump and members of Trump's family, authorities said. Manuel Tamayo-Torres posted videos on a "near-daily basis" in which he accused Trump and the president-elect's family members of kidnapping and sex-trafficking his children, according to charging documents filed in federal court in Arizona. The documents don't identify Trump by name but they describe "Individual 1" as a former president and current president-elect. Tamayo-Torres also posted a video on Nov. 21, saying Trump's "whole family is going to die," according to the charging documents. Last year, he was served with an order of protection by his ex-wife, the court documents say.

Elon Musk, whose Starlink satellite constellation is the biggest, wields power in the new Trump administration. Millions of travelers on Tuesday will battle severe weather and congested highways to reach loved ones for Thanksgiving. The National Weather Service (NWS) said in an update early Monday that a pair of weather systems were expected to bring an "Arctic outbreak" across the Central U.S. Wednesday and into Thanksgiving Thursday. Temperatures in the Northern Great Plains will only reach the high teens and 20s Tuesday and Wednesday, 15-25 degrees lower than the seasonal average. The NWS office for the Twin Cities said that Thursday could see lows of zero to 13 degrees Fahrenheit. TuesdayA quick-moving storm is bringing rain to parts of the East Coast while a few snowflakes fall around the Great Lakes. High elevation snow will bury areas from California’s Sierra Nevada to the Colorado Rockies while rain falls at lower elevations. Conditions will ease throughout the day for California and Nevada but sloppy weather will persist farther east, especially in Utah and Colorado. Dreary weather will extend from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast as the storm that formed late Wednesday pushes east. The Thanksgiving day storm will largely be out of the East by sunrise but lake-effect snow will start up for areas downwind of the Great Lakes as Arctic air rushes over the record-warm lakes.

Torrential rain and snow across the country this week could disrupt the record number of travelers expected to be on the roads and in the skies for the Thanksgiving holiday. Waves of storm systems are expected to move through the East Coast this week, threatening to disrupt some Thanksgiving travel on Tuesday and bringing rain and potentially snow on Thanksgiving Day. Forecasters expect it to bring mostly nuisance rain that may slow down some travelers. This week’s event should be weaker, affecting areas farther south in Central and Southern California, rather than in places that are still saturated from last week. Any rain that falls in Los Angeles should be lighter, while the heavier rain of a few inches is likely to fall over areas farther north, like Santa Barbara.

In 2022, 69.3% of Americans reported some alcohol consumption in the previous year, a slight increase from 69% in 2020 and 66.34% in 2018. Though the researchers couldn’t answer exactly why alcohol consumption was so high among the US adults surveyed, Lee has a few hypotheses. The height of the pandemic also saw an average of about 488 deaths per day due to excessive alcohol consumption; there was an increase of more than 29% from 2016-17 to 2020-21. “We’ve shown in studies that liver transplants for alcohol have increased fivefold in the last 20 years. We’ve also shown that alcohol deaths due to liver disease are surging,” he said.

Covid Can Raise the Risk of Heart Problems for Years
  + stars: | 2024-11-22 | by ( Nina Agrawal | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Since nearly the start of the pandemic, scientists have known that a Covid-19 infection increases the risk of heart problems. A growing body of research now suggests that this risk can last until well after the infection has cleared. What’s more, the study found that infections severe enough to require hospitalization increased the likelihood of cardiac events as much as — or more than — having previously had a heart attack did. “A lot of people are at even greater risk of heart attack than they were before,” said Dr. David Goff, director for the cardiovascular sciences division at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which provided funding for the study. So this is really concerning.”Given the volume of evidence now linking Covid-19 to heart inflammation, heart failure, arrhythmia and other cardiovascular issues, experts said, doctors should be taking a closer look at patients’ Covid history.

If Steel wins, that number would be 151, the same number of women serving in Congress on Election Day, and the first stall in progress since 2016, when President-elect Donald Trump won his first term. Both scenarios mean the number of women in the next Congress will also fall short of the current record of 152 women, following Texas Democratic Rep. Erica Lee Carter’s special election win this month. Senate Republican women will also meet their current record, with nine in the chamber. The number of House Republican women will decrease because of some losses and retirements, falling from 34 in the current Congress to 31 or 32, depending on Steel and Miller-Meeks’ races. After Trump’s first election in 2016, Democrats did see a surge in women running for Congress in 2018, and a wave of Republican women stepped up to run two years later in 2020.

Kennedy will likely have some influence over who the president-elect chooses for those roles, health policy experts said. Ultimately, Kennedy's influence over immunization policy could lead to an increase in diseases preventable by vaccines, several health policy experts told CNBC. Investors are already bracing for a crackdown on food policy, with shares of processed food companies, such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola , falling on Friday. Seigerman said "there is little precedent in recent history for HHS policy dictating or affecting FDA regulation or approval of drugs." Uncertainty among U.S. shippers is escalating into 2025 with the expectation of new Trump tariffs and the possibility of a new ports strike that could begin in mid-January. The earliest new tariffs could be in effect is in late February or early March, according to an alert from C.H. Travel time for ocean freight from China to the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports is 40-55 days. “So, I paid it.”On online baby message boards and other social media forums, pregnant women say they are being asked by their providers to pay out-of-pocket fees earlier than expected. In some cases, they may cause women to forgo prenatal care altogether, especially in places where few other maternity care options exist. When a pregnancy ends, OB-GYNs typically file a single insurance claim for routine prenatal care, labor, delivery, and, often, postpartum care. In addition, many people are opting for high-deductible health insurance plans, leaving them to shoulder a larger share of the costs. Of the 100 million U.S. people with health care debt, 12% attribute at least some of it to maternity care, according to a 2022 KFF poll.

PhD candidate Alison Laferriere from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego discovered the nearly 10-foot-long oarfish on a beach in Encinitas, in southern California, last week. A convicted identity thief who admitted to posing as a nurse in Virginia nearly a decade ago is accused of impersonating nurses in at least two hospitals in Southern California this year, authorities said. Porter, who does not have a nursing license, was charged with identity theft, false impersonation and grand theft, the department said. Prior to her arrest in that case, the department said, Porter was in custody over similar allegations linked to a hospital in nearby Santa Clarita, California. During her first five shifts at the hospital, she was under the supervision of a training nurse, the facility said. The hospital added that Porter, who is not named in the hospital's statement, was under the supervision of a nurse and there was no indication of compromised care.
