AdvertisementI buy most of my kids' school clothes during the after-Thanksgiving sales. Even when buying school clothes for my kids on sale, I don't buy a lot. Keeping a stock of school supplies basics on hand saves both time and moneyI spent more on school supplies when my kids were in elementary school — school supply lists times two with crayons, colored pencils, and so many glue sticks drove my expenses up. That said, my kids still need school supplies, but they're usually the basics, such as paper, notebooks, folders, and pens and pencils. AdvertisementAlso, I never go to the store in person to buy school supplies.

Business Insider has verified his identity and his use of two bots designed for gig delivery apps. I found this guy who writes some articles on gig work, and he talked about having access to bots for Instacart. I then created my own business, teaching others how to make money from focus groups. I noticed that I was consistently bringing in $2,000 to $3,000 a month from focus groups alone, so I eventually transitioned to concentrate solely on doing focus groups. AdvertisementLast month, in March, I participated in 18 focus groups for a total of $2,770 or an average of $154 per focus group. The best free ways to find focus groups are by searching "focus groups near me" or "taste tests near me" on Google, Craigslist, and social media. They were reputable companies with a huge volume of focus groups, so things probably slipped through the cracks.

Gig workers for Instacart, DoorDash, and other apps tend to have their favorite YouTubers. Two gig workers with followings on YouTube told Insider about how they decide what to talk about. Like many gig workers, Sabo started doing gig work full-time in 2020 as demand for delivery shot up. He also sells tools for new gig workers, such as a spreadsheet to help them calculate their earnings. Some gig workers are quitting the industry, citing falling earning potential on many of the apps and slowing demand for delivery.

Instacart, the grocery delivery company that slashed its valuation during last year's market slide, filed its paperwork to go public on Friday in what's poised to be the first significant venture-backed tech IPO since December 2021. In May, Instacart said it was leaning into the generative AI boom with Ask Instacart, a search tool that aims to answer customers' grocery shopping questions. Instacart will try and crack open the IPO market, which has been mostly closed since late 2021. In March of last year, Instacart slashed its valuation to $24 billion from $39 billion as public stocks sank. Apoorva Mehta, Instacart's founder and executive chairman, plans to transition off the board after the company's public market debut, according to a 2022 release.

Drivers from Target-owned delivery service Shipt pick up packages from the extension facility and deliver them to customers' doorsteps. The extension facility is part of Target's effort to offer next-day delivery to more customers. The extension facility adds to that model and expands the radius for faster deliveries. Target said the extension facility will bring next-day delivery within reach of 500,000 more customers near Atlanta. One of its rivals, Walmart , bucked the trend as online sales jumped 27% year over year in the U.S. in the fiscal first quarter.

The company hopes convenient perks like curbside returns will boost customer loyalty and jolt sales. Neither company would quantify the use of curbside pickup or returns, but Walmart said it has seen nearly double the volume of customers using curbside returns from its launch across the chain last fall compared with this month. At Target's investor day in late February, Citibank analyst Paul Lejuez asked if the retailer would ultimately miss out on purchases by adding curbside returns. He said allowing curbside returns also helps the retailer get unwanted items back on the sales floor faster and lowers the cost of mail-in returns. For Target, curbside returns could serve as a differentiator and a complement to the merchandise mix it sells, Hoyler said.
Target is making an additional $100 million investment in speeding up delivery. Adding at least six new "sortation centers" will position the retailer to deliver more online orders in one day. Next-day delivery would make Target faster than many Amazon orders in certain markets. This store-as-warehouse approach has helped Target orders reach customers across the US relatively quickly using the company's existing retail infrastructure. This year, the company expects to move 50 million packages through its sortation centers, doubling 2022's count.
Target Investing $100 Million to Expand Next-Day Delivery

Target is one of several retailers using stores to fill orders to help manage inventory and the high costs of last-mile delivery. A Target worker loads packages for last-mile delivery at the retailer’s Minneapolis sortation center. Despite slowing growth, online orders make up a substantial portion of Target’s sales. The sortation centers are meant to relieve stores of the burden of sorting packages for final delivery, speeding shipments up in the process. The facilities handled 26 million packages last year, and Target expects that number to double this year.
Target said Wednesday it will spend $100 million to build a larger network of supply chain hubs to speed up and lower the cost of delivering online orders. The retailer plans to have at least 15 of the facilities, dubbed sortation centers, by the end of January 2026. But, she added, the delivery hubs will help Target better meet customers' needs, whether they're shopping online, in stores or using curbside pickup. It has opened sortation centers across major markets in Minnesota, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Georgia and Pennsylvania. In the coming year, she said Target expects to deliver 50 million packages through the sortation centers — up from 26 million packages in 2022.
Current gig workers could end up worse off because of the added competition. Many US gig workers are already struggling to earn a steady income. He says it's been very difficult for him to get ahead financially since he began gig work in 2019. If more competition does come, gig workers will have to decide whether the income justifies the hours they're putting in. Some full-time gig workers, who research has found account for roughly 3% of US adults and between 30 and 60% of overall gig workers, are making over six figures.
All of us in the private sector have a responsibility to offer a helping hand. Food insecurity is an issue that can impact nearly every aspect of people's lives. Business leaders across the country took the opportunity of the conference to make promises to help address the national hunger crisis. This is an example of how Shipt — and the private sector at large — can step in to help local communities and nonprofits address food insecurity and scarcity. A critical element toward achieving this goal is reauthorizing the Farm Bill, which would help prioritize healthy food access for low-income families.
