US lawmakers are ramping up their pressure on e-commerce platforms like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress. Representatives for Temu, Shein, and AliExpress did not return Business Insider's request for comment. It added that almost 50% of all de minimis shipments to the US come from China. Shipping consultancy ShipMatrix estimates that Temu and Shein each ship more than a million packages to the US daily. Brown and Scott are not the only US lawmakers to advocate for change as Temu and Shein have gained a foothold.

Uber is adding a new task to its list of services: mailing consumers' return packages. Uber will charge a flat fee of $5 for the service or $3 for its Uber One members. While the service is expected to be used primarily to return packages, Uber drivers will also mail new packages that are sealed and have prepaid labels. Much of that volume involves delivery to businesses that do not return packages often, Jindel said, and he believes many people will continue to return packages themselves, rather than pay Uber $5 to do it. Yet Jindel estimates demand for Uber's return package service could be around 574,000 parcels on business days.

Most online shoppers have come expect free shipping, according to a recent survey. It says companies like Macy's and Abercrombie & Fitch have raised their free shipping minimums online. Free shipping "wasn't going to last, and finally the party is over," Satish Jindel, president of shipping data company ShipMatrix, told the Journal. According to data from shipping technology firm Shippo, nearly two-thirds of Americans said they wouldn't buy something online without free shipping. "Having some type of free shipping option is now a permanent expectation," Krish Iyer, vice president of strategic partnerships at shipping software company Auctane, told Insider earlier this year.

Dec 23 (Reuters) - A severe winter storm gripping most of the United States threatens to delay millions of last-minute Christmas gift deliveries due to shutdowns at major shipping hubs. FedEx (FDX.N), United Parcel Service (UPS.N), the U.S. Postal Service and Amazon.com (AMZN.O) alerted customers that severe weather was disrupting key operations in Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, the Dakotas and other areas hard-hit by strong winds, bitter cold and blizzards. UPS and FedEx told Reuters they have contingency plans in place if severe weather shuts or idles cargo planes and delivery trucks. As a result, shipping companies have ample capacity to handle this year's holiday delivery surge, Jindel said.

The Postal Service expects all priority mail packages shipped by Dec. 19 and express packages shipped by Dec. 23 to arrive at their destinations by Christmas. “The Postal Service has shown an inclination to do whatever it takes to avoid the nightmare that they had in 2020. “I am deeply concerned about the severe delays and interruptions in postal service experienced by Montanans,” Daines said in a statement. Earlier this year, Congress appropriated $107 million to the Postal Service to fund a systemwide overhaul to modernize equipment and facilities. “We expect a very successful 2022 peak holiday season,” said Albert Ruiz, a Postal Service spokesperson.
