Advocates for abortion rights caution that opportunities to protect those rights through ballot measures may be dwindling. And while former President Donald J. Trump has most recently said he would leave abortion laws to the states if re-elected, abortion rights organizations are bracing for federal action on abortion under his presidency.

3States Certify VotesAfter local officials review and certify results, states must finalize them by Dec. 11. Election officials and experts worry that false claims about fraudulent votes and electors could spark protests and put the electors’ ability to vote at risk. 5Congress Performs the Final CountOn Jan. 6, a newly elected Congress meets at the Capitol to finalize the electoral votes, overseen by the vice president. It is possible that some members of Congress could object to a state’s certification of electoral votes. If no candidate wins a majority of electoral votes, the House would vote to choose the president.

It’s just a decisive move toward America First on foreign policy.”Trump’s selection of Vance is one of the clearest barometers of the former president’s tightening hold over the GOP. Those included Christian conservatives, the business community, congressional insiders and traditional Republican foreign policy hawks shaped by Ronald Reagan’s vision of the US as the muscular leader of the free world. Instead, with Vance, Trump chose an acolyte and potential successor who could deepen and extend the direction the former president has set for the party. Vance has been most unequivocal in criticizing the internationalist approach to foreign policy centered on robust alliances. With the selection of Vance, Trump has broadcast his belief that he has conclusively won the internal GOP debate over all aspects of US interactions with the world – foreign policy, immigration and trade.

Access to Aid in Gaza Was Dire. Israel closed that crossing as well as the Rafah crossing, where a majority of aid had been coming in. Nearly 300 aid trucks had crossed there in a single day just before the incursion. COGAT, the Israeli military agency coordinating aid delivery, has said that increasing the amount of aid going into Gaza remains a priority. But just a quarter of that amount arrives on average each day since the closure of Rafah crossing, according to U.N. data.

The publicity stunt turned out to be a promotion for the film “Argylle,” which would be released a few weeks later. “That may be fine in U.S. sports,” Pat Nevin, a popular Chelsea player in the 1980s who worked for the club until the end of last season, told me. “But to a football fan, that hurts.” A few months after leaving Chelsea, Nevin went on the BBC to warn against the prospect of adopting a popular feature at many American sports venues. “I told them, ‘No, no, don’t do a Kiss Cam,’” he says. “ ‘Such a small thing, but you can’t imagine the reaction you’re going to get.’”

The Daily Hunt for Food in GazaFor two million hungry Gazans, most days bring a difficult search for something to eat. Amany Mteir, 52, scours the streets north of Gaza City, where people sell or trade what food they have. The war, including Israel’s bombardment and siege, has choked food imports and destroyed agriculture, and nearly the entire population of Gaza relies on scant humanitarian aid to eat. Most food shops in northern Gaza are damaged or closed, so vendors set up informal street markets to sell food and other items. An average of just six commercial trucks carrying food and other supplies have been allowed to enter Gaza each day since early December.

It’s crowded and overlit, thanks to a high-wattage vanity mirror situated near a 1970s-era mini sink. “Quirky” is a word that turns up in articles about her, and quirky is rarely a mass-market trait. In 2004, it was adapted into a film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and its feverishly passionate dialogue (“It wasn’t over. It still isn’t over!” Gosling shouts, in the middle of a rainstorm.) Wielding a double-barreled shotgun in his review for The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden dismissed Sparks’s book as “treacly” and called the film “a high-toned cinematic greeting card.”

There are several key flashpoints where the Israel-Hamas war could escalate into a regional conflict that has a material impact on oil, according to the firm. Those flashpoints are the Red Sea, Lebanon and Iraq, analyst Helima Croft wrote in a note to clients this week. Crude prices fell Tuesday despite renewed attacks by Houthi militants in the Red Sea over the weekend. Maersk stopped shipping through the Red Sea again and is rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Some 12% of global trade and about 3 million barrels of crude oil pass through the Red Sea per day, according to RBC Capital Markets.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

Oct 23 (Reuters) - Outflows from exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking Israeli stocks accelerated in the last two weeks, tracking a sharp slide in share prices as the conflict between Israel and Palestinian group Hamas widens to other fronts. The iShares MSCI Israel ETF posted net outflows of $2.5 million between Oct. 9 and Oct. 20, leaving it with assets of $111.62 million, according to Lipper data. "The market doesn't like uncertainties," said Sammy Suzuki, head of emerging market equities at AllianceBernstein. Israel ETFs were underperforming most of their peers prior to Hamas' attack, said Steven Schoenfeld, CEO of Market Vector Indexes, who created the index behind the $78.4 million BlueStar Israel Technology . ETFs tracking Israeli technology stocks such as the BlueStar Israel Technology ETF and the $75.4 million ARK Israel Innovative Technology ETF recorded net outflows of $1.9 million and $7.2 million, respectively, in the last two weeks.

New York CNN —Growing unrest in the Middle East has cast a shadow on global financial markets. Israeli stocks listed in New York and Tel Aviv have sunk to recent lows, underscoring the growing economic uncertainties in the war-torn region and leaving investors unsure of where markets go from here. Funds in the US hold more than $43 billion in Israeli stocks and bonds, according to a Bloomberg tracker. Big names, big exposure: As the war continues, businesses with headquarters, factories and inventory in Israel appear increasingly at risk to geopolitical turmoil. “If the war remains confined between Israel and Palestinians, it’s likely that the markets will forget about it after a few days,” he wrote.

Data was not collected from the 14 states with abortion bans in effect in the first part of the year. Range of 2023 estimates 2020 count Low Median High 20,000 40,000 60,000 80,000 Calif. N.Y. Ill. Fla. N.J. N.C. Both reports show significant increases in abortions in states without abortion bans, a change that anti-abortion advocates and legislators are watching closely. Guttmacher researchers collected abortion data before legislatures enacted bans and restrictions in Indiana, North Carolina and South Carolina.

After the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade last year, it looked like the number of abortions would soon plummet across the country. The number of legal abortions has held steady, if not increased, nationwide since 2020, our colleagues Amy Schoenfeld Walker and Allison McCann reported today. The increase in use of those options has offset the decrease in abortions resulting from new state bans, Amy and Allison found. As you can see, states bordering those with bans largely saw increases in the number of abortions in the first half of 2023 compared with the same period in 2020. In Illinois, for example, estimated abortions rose 69 percent.

“People tell me they don’t exist.” The next morning, she would fly to Chicago on federation business. Her predecessor, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned under pressure in March 2020 while struggling to manage a dispute with the U.S. women’s national team. U.S. Soccer was being sued in federal court by players on the U.S. women’s team. “She recognized that U.S. Soccer was going through an almost existential crisis,” says one of those advisers, Don Garber, who is the Major League Soccer commissioner and also a board member. “Soccer looks a lot different today than it did when she took over,” says Kyle Martino, who played in M.L.S.
