The 12-team College Football Playoff that will eventually crown a national champion was unveiled Sunday, with top-seeded Oregon, Georgia, Boise State and Arizona State earning the top-four seeds and first-round byes in the bracket. As part of the playoff’s expansion from four teams to 12 this season, its 13-member selection committee selected the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus seven at-large teams. Only the four highest-ranked conference champions were eligible to earn a top-four seed and the reward of a bye into the quarterfinals. Ultimately, SMU became one of the bracket’s biggest winners when the playoff selection committee included the Mustangs despite its title-game loss, leaving out perennial powerhouse Alabama. At least eight people died during a failed attempt to cross the English Channel from northern France, French maritime authorities said Sunday. Once the vessel reached the beach, rescue services offered medical assistance to 53 migrants, a statement from the French maritime authorities in charge of the Channel and the North Sea said. Before Saturday’s accident, at least 43 migrants had died or gone missing while trying to cross to the U.K. this year, according to the International Organization for Migration. Other surveillance and rescue operations are underway Sunday along the entire Pas-de-Calais coast amid stormy weather conditions and agitated sea, French maritime authorities said. In July, four migrants died while attempting the crossing on an inflatable boat that capsized and punctured.

Jerusalem/London CNN —Three Israeli soldiers and an Egyptian policeman have been killed in a rare border crossing incident. They say the Egyptian policeman shot two Israeli border guards – and that when Israeli back-up arrived later, a firefight ensued that killed both the policeman and a third Israeli. The first two IDF soldiers killed were discovered dead by their lieutenant when they did not answer their radio, according to the spokesman. COOKE CITY, Mont. — Two people were killed in New Year’s Eve avalanches in Montana and Colorado after heavy snow blanketed much of the West. A fatal avalanche near Cooke City, Mont., on Saturday. It broke on weak snow near the bottom of the snowpack. Saturday’s accidents marked the second and third avalanche fatalities this winter, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which tracks the deaths nationally.
