Justin Sullivan | Getty ImagesAsian semiconductor-related stocks mostly slumped on Thursday after Nvidia reported an earnings forecast that failed to meet the lofty expectations of some investors. The sentiment has spilled over to Asia, with stocks tied to Nvidia suppliers as well as other chip companies mostly falling. Selloff in AsiaSemiconductor testing equipment supplier Advantest , which counts Nvidia among its clients, dropped as much as 5.6% on Thursday, the largest chip loser on Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp , which manufacturers Nvidia's high-performance graphics processing units, slipped as much as 1.5%. The company has been a key supplier to Nvidia and is building the world's largest manufacturing facility in Mexico for assembling Nvidia's GB200 superchips, a key component of its next-generation Blackwell family computing platform.

To deliver with Blackwell, Nvidia must juggle performance expectations and complex supply chains. How next year plays out will significantly depend on the performance of Blackwell, its next-generation AI chip. The Santa Clara-based chip giant reminded everyone why it has grown more than 200% this year to become the world's most valuable company. AdvertisementNvidia must navigate complex supply chainsFirst, Blackwell is what Nvidia CFO Colette Kress called a "full-stack" system. There had been some recent suggestions that cooling issues were plaguing Blackwell, but Huang seemed to suggest they had been addressed.

Those hopes fall on Blackwell, which is Nvidia's name for a family of server products based around its next-generation AI chip. Some of Nvidia's most important end-customers have already received some Blackwell chips, the company confirmed on Wednesday. "We will we'll ship more Blackwells next quarter than this [quarter], and we'll ship more Blackwells the quarter after that than than our first quarter," Huang said. A limiting factor to producing more Blackwell systems is the amount of components that Nvidia's suppliers can provide, Huang said. As Blackwell rolls out, Nvidia's current AI chips, which it calls Hopper, will be relegated to serving AI models, not creating new ones.

Shares of Samsung Electronics jumped on Monday after the company unveiled a surprise plan to buy back about 10 trillion South Korean won ($7.19 billion) worth of its own stock over the next 12 months. Samsung last bought back shares in November 2017, according to data maintained by LSEG. In a regulatory filing, the company said that 3 trillion won of shares will be bought back in the next three months and canceled. While the repurchase of the remaining 7 trillion won worth of shares will be "authorized accordingly by the Board, which will decide on ways to enhance shareholder value, including when and how to use the treasury shares," it added. According to South Korean media, SK Hynix is the first chipmaker in the world to supply fifth-generation HBM3E chips in March to Nvidia.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in this week's election has raised questions about how Asia will be impacted. "When passed, the [tariffs] will sweep across Asia, particularly China [and] should spike volatility and compress multiples as uncertainty prevails." Even so, the analysts say the region is "more prepared than in 2016" and investment opportunities remain, especially given the weaker yen and stimulus in China. This will bring about "structural shifts in global supply chain ... [and] could boost infrastructure spending in ASEAN and South Asia," he added. The currency has fallen versus the dollar following Trump's win, hitting 154.7 per dollar on Wednesday — its weakest level since July 30.

Micron Technology shares surged roughly 14% in after-hours trading after the memory maker forecast higher-than-expected first-quarter revenue due to the thirst for its memory chips used in artificial intelligence computing. HBM is a space-saving, power-efficient type of dynamic random access memory chip, or DRAM, crucial for AI-focused graphics processing units, that aid in processing vast amounts of data. "Demand from data center customers continues to be strong and customer inventory levels are healthy," Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on a conference call with analysts. The AI boom has also helped Micron cushion the hit from a memory chip inventory glut in PC and smartphone markets. Personal computers infused with AI technologies are expected to have more memory chips, helping firms such as Micron.

Analysts at major Wall Street banks are getting more cautious on chip darling ASML , raising concerns about the critical chip equipment maker's demand outlook. Earlier this week, investment bank UBS downgraded ASML to "neutral" and cut its price target on the stock to 900 euros ($1,000.78) from 1,050 euros previously. Other Wall Street banks have subsequently come out with their own respective analyses on ASML — and they're more downbeat than they were before. The bank remains bullish on the stock, though, keeping ASML in its top pick for EU semiconductor equipment stocks. UBS cautioned ASML's machines could face a slowdown in demand due to an "architecture shift" to gate all around architecture, or GAA.

Critical chip equipment supplier ASML is set to face softer demand from buyers of its products in the coming years — and the artificial intelligence boom won't be enough to offset these downside risks, according to analysts at investment bank UBS . Such memory chip makers include Samsung and Nvidia supplier SK Hynix. ASML is behind a key technology involved in chip manufacturing known as EUV, or extreme ultraviolet radiation. DRAM is a type of memory chip that's needed for a computer to function.
