A new brick-and-mortar store from the e-commerce startup Outlandish is bringing to life the world of TikTok Shop. In addition to TikTok Shop, Outlandish has experience working with brands to help them sell on Douyin and other social apps. Other TikTok Shop sellers have experimented with adding livestreaming spaces to their storefronts, such as the New York-based pre-owned luxury store What Goes Around Comes Around. Outlandish, which began in 2018 as a social shopping agency in China, is an official TikTok Shop partner. If that does happen, August said Outlandish's Santa Monica sellers could pivot to livestreaming on other platforms.

AdvertisementKatie Vasquez landed her first venture capital job at 23 years old. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Katie Vasquez, a 26-year-old investor at Calibrate Ventures based in Santa Monica, California, on her experience working in venture capital. I'm an investor at Calibrate Ventures, an early-stage deep-tech venture capital firm. My advice for other people hoping to get into VC is to leverage your network and stay up to date on the industry. This experience provided a great foundation for thinking more about technical due diligence, tech architecture, and strategy, but moving into investing and venture capital felt like the most exciting path.

Beata Zawrzel | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesWith Americans heading to the polls on Election Day, social media companies like Meta , TikTok, X and YouTube are under intense pressure to handle what's expected to be a flood of disinformation, heightened by the rise of artificial intelligence. The video amassed hundreds of thousands of views within hours after it was posted on Elon Musk's social media platform X. And TikTok failed to catch ads containing false election information despite its ban on political advertising, according to an October report from Global Witness. On Facebook and Instagram, Meta said it's adding fact-check labels to election content that's been debunked. In sharing dozens of posts a day on X, Musk regularly amplifies false election information to his more than 200 million followers.

CNN —While Luther Vandross died in 2005 at the age of 54, his music remains timeless. Director Dawn Porter told CNN that as beloved as Vandross was, she wanted the film to be more than just an overt love letter to him. But for Porter, an award-winning filmmaker, the one person she wanted to make sure she gave an opportunity to speak was Vandross himself. “For Luther, I just gained such a much deeper appreciation of the work that he put into making his art look effortless,” she said. “Luther: Never Too Much” hits theaters in select cities Friday and will premiere next year on CNN, OWN and Max.

But navigating the city without a car is not impossible. Anticipating the crush of fans heading to Dodger Stadium, Metro Los Angeles posted a video on X of how to reach the stadium from the Chinatown station on foot. The path has been a staple for locals and Dodger fans alike over the years. There is also L.A.’s metro bus — known by many as “the Dodger bus” — which offers fans free rides from Union Station with proof of a game ticket. “Everyone in L.A. was complaining about the Metro being way too difficult and the 25-minute walk,” said Mr. Wechsler.

A California doctor is expected to plead guilty Wednesday in a deal with federal prosecutors over the fatal overdose of “Friends” star Matthew Perry last year. According to an 18-count indictment filed in August, Chavez is one of five individuals charged in connection with Perry's accidental overdose. The other individuals charged in connection with Perry’s death include the actor’s live-in personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, 60, and Erik Fleming, 54, a friend of Perry’s who authorities described as a “street dealer.” Both have pleaded guilty and await sentencing. Also charged is Jasveen Sangha, 41, an alleged drug dealer known as the “ketamine queen” who has pleaded not guilty. “We allege each of the defendants played a key role in his death by falsely prescribing, selling or injecting the ketamine that caused Matthew Perry’s tragic death,” Drug Enforcement Administration chief Anne Milgram said when the charges were announced.

Snap on Tuesday announced the fifth generation of its Spectacles augmented reality glasses that can overlay digital graphics onto the physical world. Snap's announcement comes days before rival Meta's Connect event, a conference where Facebook's parent typically unveils its latest hardware. Like Meta, Snap has been trying for years to break into consumer hardware. The previous day Meta reported better-than-expected quarterly results that sent the stock price up 7%. That’s made home insurance increasingly unaffordable or even inaccessible – and that’s leaving more people in the same position as the Daneaus. California’s largest insurer, State Farm, requested a 30% rate increase for its homeowner’s line last month. Last year, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara reached an agreement with insurers with an aim to cover approximately 85% of properties in high-risk areas. “[My insurance plan] wasn’t canceled but my insurance company increased the rates quite a bit,” she said. But he cautioned there’s no guarantee of that, leaving homeowners like the Daneaus grappling with uncertainty.

Walter Arlen, a Viennese musical prodigy who fled to the United States after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and became a music critic and a late-in-life composer of Holocaust and Jewish-exile remembrances in song, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 103. The death, in a hospital, was not widely reported at the time; Howard Myers, Mr. Arlen’s husband and sole survivor, confirmed it to The New York Times only recently. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Myers, longtime residents of Santa Monica, had been companions for 65 years and were married in 2008 after California’s Supreme Court upheld the legality of same-sex marriages. Even after eight decades, Mr. Arlen’s memories remained vivid — of his father being dragged off to a concentration camp; of his mother’s nervous breakdown and suicide; of his family’s home, business and bank accounts stolen by the Nazi authorities; and of witnessing the vicious murder of an older Jew by an SS guard.

Two Los Angeles-area beaches were shut down for 48 hours after thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into a creek — but that did not seem to bother the crowd of dog walkers, runners, yogis and surfers enjoying the beach early on Tuesday before the day’s heat set in. An estimated 15,000 gallons of sewage — about the volume a backyard swimming pool holds — were discharged on Saturday afternoon in a neighborhood roughly seven miles east of the Santa Monica Pier, entering Ballona Creek, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said in a news release. “The cause of the sewage discharge was a broken water main that pushed sand into the sewer, causing the blockage,” the agency said.
