In the final weeks of the campaign, Trump kept supporters at a Michigan rally waiting for hours after he detoured to Texas to record Rogan’s show. And then many of them suddenly found themselves running Harris’ campaign. “This has been an historic partnership in which these teams have worked together extraordinarily well,” said a White House official who has been there from the beginning. “Not enough people understand the importance of that,” a Trump campaign official said of the Kennedy nod. It was the first energizing move that the campaign had since the switch-out.”A Democrat close to the Harris campaign said: “Brat summer had to end.

Read previewAfter months of having to defend his age, President Joe Biden seems willing to discuss it — and its limitations — openly. Sitting for an interview on "The View" on Wednesday, he subtly acknowledged how age factored into his decision to drop out of the election. While Biden stopped short of pinning his decision on his age alone, he openly hinted at the toll being an 86-year-old president would have taken. At his State of the Union speech in March, Biden simultaneously joked about and worked hard to justify his age. When Whoopi Goldberg, one of the hosts, compared Trump to a bug, Biden slapped the table, miming killing the insect to raucous applause.

With Hunter Biden on trial, special counsel spending grows
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Katelyn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Special counsel David Weiss’ office spent a total of $3.4 million over the past six months, a dramatic increase as it took Hunter Biden to trial in Delaware on gun-related charges and secured a conviction of the president’s son. Spending by two other Justice Department-appointed special counsels, Jack Smith and Robert Hur, decreased slightly compared with the six months prior. The disclosures come as courts have upped their scrutiny of special counsel office operations. Hunter Biden and another defendant in a separate criminal case have so far been unsuccessful in attempting to challenge special counsel Weiss’ authority. Challengers including Trump have argued that shouldn’t be allowed because Congress didn’t specifically sign off on the special counsel offices.

Biden is 81 years old and, if he completes another term, would be 86 by the end of his presidency. There is a move he can take to help turn the tides: Release the Hur tapes. In later testimony before Congress, Hur said Biden "himself put his memory squarely at issue." His White House lawyers also wrote letters objecting to the language, writing Hur characterized Biden's memory "in sweeping, quasi-medical terms." The audio of Biden's interview could be manipulated by deepfakes in a politically volatile moment, they say.

After Biden’s lackluster performance last week, some are questioning whether the White House press corps dropped the ball on fully covering Biden’s limitations. Nearly every media outlet has reported on growing concerns about Biden’s age well before the debate. Several White House reporters told CNN that the coverage of Biden’s age and his mental stamina should have pushed harder. The White House press shop has also been very “aggressive” and “fairly successful” in mitigating coverage of concerns over the president’s age, said another White House reporter who works for a different publication. “I think the press, most of the White House press, did suffer from a bit of lack of curiosity,” one of the reporters said.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump, 78, may have lied throughout the first presidential debate of the 2024 election, but the evening still may have provided a lift for his campaign as President Joe Biden, 81, struggled to find his footing during the debate. Trump and Biden had their first face-off on Thursday evening, breaking with election norms by holding a debate months before voters head to the polls in November. CNN's fact-checker, Daniel Dale, estimated that Trump said false or misleading statements 30 times during the debate. Throughout the Thursday debate, Biden's voice sounded raspy as the president struggled at moments to hold in a cough. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland departs for a recess during a House Judiciary Committee hearing entitled “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice”, in Washington, D.C., U.S., June 4, 2024. Attorney General Merrick Garland will not be prosecuted for contempt of Congress because his refusal to turn over audio of President Joe Biden's interview in his classified documents case "did not constitute a crime," the Justice Department said Friday. In a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Justice Department official cited the department's longstanding policy not to prosecute for contempt of Congress officials who don't comply with subpoenas because of a president's claim of executive privilege. Garland is the third attorney general to be held in contempt of Congress. He has defended the Justice Department, saying officials have gone to extraordinary lengths to provide information to the committees about special counsel Robert Hur's classified documents investigation, including a transcript of Biden's interview with him.

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled House on Wednesday narrowly voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress, a major escalation in the GOP's war against a justice system the party has portrayed as unfairly targeting Donald Trump. At issue was Garland's failure to hand over audio of special counsel Robert Hur's interview with President Joe Biden about his handling of classified documents. It's also unheard of for Justice Department prosecutors to go after the head of their agency over a contempt issue. Last month, both the House Judiciary and Oversight committees approved a report recommending that the House hold Garland in contempt for defying congressional subpoenas pertaining to the audio recording. Unable to come up with any wrongdoing by the president, they have now trained their sights on the attorney general," Nadler said.

CNN —It’s the recurring threat President Joe Biden’s reelection bid will never be able to fully outrun. Democrats accused Republicans quoted or referred to in the account of making false claims and contradicting previous statements to damage Biden politically. But all it takes is one halting on-camera moment or media report to revive the frenzy over Biden’s age. Biden’s team habitually dismisses any concern over his capacity, and his doctors have certified him fit for duty. But they are concerned about Biden’s age.

Washington CNN —Attorney General Merrick Garland appeared defiant Tuesday as he spent hours fielding questions from lawmakers on a range of topics, occasionally sparring with Republican House members seeking to use his testimony to attack the Justice Department. “These repeated attacks on the Justice Department are unprecedented, and they are unfounded,” he told lawmakers. “I will not be intimidated, and the Justice Department will not be intimidated. “It is not the fault of the Department of Justice that Donald Trump has surrounded himself with criminals,” Lieu said. “Trump brought that upon himself.”Lieu also noted that President Biden’s son Hunter is being prosecuted “in federal court right now” by Garland’s Justice Department.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland testifies before the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, June 4, 2024. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday hit back at House Republicans threatening to hold him in contempt, calling their efforts part of a wave of "unprecedented and unfounded" attacks against the Department of Justice. "I will not be intimidated," Garland said in his testimony at the start of a hearing before the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary panel's hearing Tuesday morning was billed as an examination of how the DOJ under Garland has become "politicized and weaponized." "Guys, I'm starting to think you're in a cult," Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., told the committee's Republicans at one point.

Other Trump cases are in suspended animationTwo federal cases against Trump, in which he’s also pleaded not guilty, are in a holding pattern. At the same time, multiple disputes in pre-trial motions have put the looming federal trial in Florida over Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents into suspended animation. But if Trump wins, he could appoint an attorney general who could halt the federal cases in their tracks. Garland is also likely to face scrutiny over the Hunter Biden trial. Republicans celebrated when a plea deal, which they saw as “sweetheart” treatment for Hunter Biden, collapsed in court.

The DOJ clapped back against the groups in a legal filing late last week, arguing that releasing the audio could ignite an AI-powered, deepfake frenzy. CNN —House Republicans will take their first step towards holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress on Thursday for refusing to turn over the audio recordings of special counsel Robert Hur’s interviews with President Joe Biden. The House Oversight and Judiciary committees will each hold markups on their respective reports recommending a contempt of Congress resolution against Garland for failing to comply with a congressional subpoena. If passed out of the committees, the resolutions would next go to the House floor for a vote by the whole chamber. While Hur’s probe led to no charges against the president, Republicans have seized on Hur’s description of Biden as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” in his final report. DOJ has also outlined distinct privacy concerns related to an audio recording of an interview compared to a written transcript, and how the release of such an audio file could dissuade cooperation from future witnesses in criminal investigations.

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks while meeting with the Joint Chiefs and Combatant Commanders in the Cabinet Room of the White House May 15, 2024 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has asserted executive privilege over an audio recording of his interview with special counsel Robert Hur, the Republican federal prosecutor who declined to recommend charges against the president over his handling of classified documents. White House counsel Ed Siskel notified Reps. James Comer and Jim Jordan of the decision in a letter on Thursday. The decision came after Attorney General Merrick Garland recommended that Biden assert executive privilege. Biden defended his memory, and Garland later said it would be "absurd" for him to have tried to block Hur's language about the president's memory.

In February, there was a flurry of discussion about whether Joe Biden’s advancing age and seeming weakness in a matchup with Donald Trump meant that he should step aside. “The Drumbeat for Biden to Step Aside Will Only Grow Louder” ran one headline from that period, from Robert Kuttner in the American Prospect. All it took was Biden giving a passable State of the Union address: Thereafter his poll numbers marginally improved, the optimists on the Democratic side seized the rhetorical initiative, and the “should Biden step aside?” discourse faded into background noise. But it’s also quite consistent; since last fall, both candidates are bouncing around within a very narrow range. ), because voters aren’t paying close attention yet (but don’t they already know both of the candidates quite well?

CNN —The Department of Justice doubled down on its decision to not release the audio files of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur to House Republicans, stating that Republicans have not established a legitimate legislative purpose for demanding these recordings, in a new letter obtained by CNN. The DOJ’s refusal to turn over the audio comes as Republicans find their impeachment inquiry into the president stalled now that the prospects of the investigation ending in impeachment are increasingly unlikely. Without the votes in their narrow majority or evidence of an impeachable offense, Republicans are now struggling with how to end their probe. Uriarte pointed to the possibility that audio files can be manipulated through “cutting, erasing, and splicing” in a way that increases the privacy concerns of the witness. Uriarte therefore accused Republicans of going after these audio files for the wrong reasons.
