The interest rate outlook will come back into focus next week with key inflation data and Federal Reserve meeting minutes coming out ahead of Thanksgiving, as investors wrap up a major month for markets following President-elect Donald Trump's election victory. The October personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index set to release Wednesday could dent already-dimming hopes for a December rate cut if it comes in hotter than expected. The inflation rate is expected to have increased 0.2% month over month and 2.3% year on year. Rosy expectations Even with the interest rate cut expectations coming in, investors are optimistic on the direction for stocks to close out the year and into 2025. Goldman Sachs' David Kostin this week said he expects the S & P 500 can end next year at 6,500.

Update: These letters were published online before Matt Gaetz said he was withdrawing from consideration as attorney general. To the Editor:Re “House Republicans Block Release of Ethics Report on Gaetz” (news article, Nov. 21):Let’s just call it what it is — a Republican cover-up. The witness testimony and evidence produced by the House Ethics Committee at taxpayer expense must be presented to the U.S. Senate so the senators can carry out their constitutional responsibilities in a fair and complete way. And should the House cover-up succeed, voters must hold their representatives accountable. Richard DickinsonRichmond Hill, Ga.To the Editor:If the roles were reversed and a Democrat selected for a cabinet position had an ethics report that the Democrats moved to block, Republicans would mount an attack, leak the report anyway and say, “The American people deserve to know!”

But holding the White House and Senate majority for another few weeks doesn’t guarantee Democrats will have an easy time processing the final batch of Biden appointees. “There is a push across the board from the White House and the Senate for Democrats to show up and do the job they were elected to do,” a senior White House official, asking for anonymity to speak candidly, told CNN. The White House official pointed to how Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn on Saturday promised “no weekends, no breaks” to confirm Trump’s Cabinet once he took power, and the White House official encouraged Democrats to show that dedication to judges in Biden’s final stretch. “Regardless of party, the American people expect their leaders to prioritize the rule of law and ensuring the criminal justice system can function effectively in every stated,” said White House spokesperson Andrew Bates.
