The Texas Board of Education narrowly voted Friday to allow Bible-based curriculum in elementary schools. Greg Abbott has voiced support for the lesson plans, which were provided by the state’s education agency that oversees the more than 5 million students in Texas public schools. Staci Childs, who is an attorney and a Democrat who voted against the Bible curriculum at Friday's hearing, said she believes it will be challenged in court. The new Texas curriculum follows Republican-led efforts in neighboring states to give religion more of a presence in public schools. The Texas Education Agency, which oversees public education for students statewide, created its instruction materials after a law passed in 2023 by the GOP-controlled Legislature required the agency to do so.

NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana’s plan to make all of the state’s public school classrooms post the Ten Commandments next year remains on hold under an order Wednesday by a federal appeals court in New Orleans. The state contends that deGravelles’ order affects only the five school districts that are defendants in a legal challenge. Jeff Landry signed the bill into law in June, prompting a group of Louisiana public school parents of different faiths to sue. Murrill, the Republican attorney general, has said she disagreed with deGravelles’ ruling and that the law is constitutional under Supreme Court precedents. In recent years, similar bills requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in classrooms have been proposed in states including Texas, Oklahoma and Utah.

President-elect Donald Trump is planning to nominate South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem to serve as the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, according to four sources familiar with the decision. As Homeland Security secretary, Noem would oversee a number of key federal agencies including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Secret Service, TSA and the Coast Guard. But because she was having a miscarriage in a hospital in Georgia, surgery had to wait. Several others restrict it to certain points in pregnancy, including Georgia, which limits abortion to the first six weeks of pregnancy. Bell’s pregnancy was at 18 weeks — too early for her fetus to survive outside the womb but well past Georgia’s limit. Doctors told Bell she’d have to wait, unless her condition grew worse: Georgia makes people wait 24 hours before they can have an abortion except in medical emergencies.
