It may be a coincidence that the celebrity look-alike competition returned to prominence just as American citizens were voting in what some called “the most significant presidential election in our lifetimes.” But once it happened, the appeal was obvious. Here was a different kind of democratic event: a totally insignificant one, in which attractive men with slightly off-kilter features were lined up in public and ranked by the roaring crowd. At the first contest, which convened a flock of Timothée Chalamet doubles in Manhattan last month, the New York Police Department showed up, deemed it an “unscheduled demonstration” and arrested four people. They are typically publicized with posters on lampposts, staged in public parks and accompanied by meager prizes. The Mescal double won 20 euro “or three pints”; the White winner received $50 and a pack of Marlboro Reds.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with House Republicans at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 13, 2024. Congressional lawmakers will soon debate expiring tax breaks and new promises from President-elect Donald Trump. With a majority in the House of Representatives and Senate, Republican lawmakers can pass sweeping tax legislation through "reconciliation," which bypasses the Senate filibuster. But choosing priorities could be difficult, particularly amid the federal budget deficit, policy experts said Tuesday at a Brookings Institution event in Washington. Legislators will be "representing their districts, not their party," Howard Gleckman, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, said Tuesday in a panel discussion at the Brookings event.

The world’s largest coral has just been discovered in the southwest Pacific Ocean, scientists announced Wednesday. It’s three times larger than the previous record-breaker in American Samoa, according to Pristine Seas, and longer than a blue whale, the planet’s biggest animal. Steve Spence/National Geographic Pristine SeasA diver swims alongside the mega coral, which is made up of nearly 1 billion polyps. “Making a discovery of this significance is the ultimate dream,” said Paul Rose, a National Geographic Pristine Seas expedition leader. Yet while the mega coral remains vulnerable, he believes its health and longevity do provide a glimmer of hope.

Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Braves have raised issues with the reorganization plan and future viability of Diamond Sports Group, the country's largest owner of regional sports networks, according to a Friday bankruptcy court filing. The filing noted that both MLB and the Braves have a vested interest in Diamond Sports succeeding with a reorganization plan, but they are not convinced that the one currently proposed is viable. Meanwhile, Diamond will seek approval of its reorganization plan from a U.S. bankruptcy judge on Thursday. The Friday objection does not mean that the Braves have turned away from Diamond for their regional media rights. On Friday, the Cincinnati Reds said they would exit their regional sport network owned by Diamond, according to a court filing.

Diamond Sports — the owner of Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks — said Wednesday that it plans to drop all MLB teams from its channels except for the Atlanta Braves. A Diamond attorney made the comments before a U.S. bankruptcy judge on Wednesday as part of an update on the company's ongoing bankruptcy process and attempt at finalizing a reorganization plan. Some of those teams were already slated to see their contracts end this season, and some contracts are not being determined by the bankruptcy process, a Diamond spokesperson said. "To be clear, rejecting these teams is not our preferred path," Diamond attorney Andrew Goldman said on Wednesday. Goldman said Diamond had warned the league about this outcome in August, noting it was a possibility if the MLB rejected Diamond's latest proposal.

Rose was one of baseball’s greats – a winning-obsessed sparkplug who topped MLB’s all-time hit list with 4,256 over a 24-season career. It wasn’t until 2004 that Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball and the Reds, though he denied ever betting against his own team. Sometimes, on the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he also would hold autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore. While Cooperstown didn’t admit him into its Hall of Fame, the Reds got him into theirs with the commissioner’s permission. That was the perfect way to capture Rose, said Johnny Bench, the Hall of Fame catcher.

Pete Rose, who holds the Major League Baseball record for hits and games played, has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson for the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Nevada. The hard-charging Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” broke Ty Cobb’s 57-year-old hits record in 1985. After his playing career, Rose continued as manager of the Reds. In 1989, Rose was banned from baseball for life after an investigation concluded that he had bet on games while he was both a Reds player and manager. SANTA ANA, Calif. — A Southern California bookmaker who took thousands of sports bets from the former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani pleaded guilty Friday to running an illegal gambling business. “I was running an illegal gambling operation, laundering money through other people’s bank accounts,” Bowyer told the judge. According to prosecutors, Bowyer ran an illegal gambling business for at least five years in Southern California and Las Vegas, and he took wagers from more than 700 bettors, including Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Meanwhile, sports gambling is illegal in California, even as 38 states and the District of Columbia allow some form of it. Federal prosecutors said Bowyer’s other customers included a professional baseball player for a Southern California club and a former minor league player.

CINCINNATI — The San Francisco Giants’ Blake Snell threw his first no-hitter Friday night at Great American Ball Park, striking out 11 Cincinnati Reds in the 3-0 victory. Snell got Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz to fly out to right-fielder Mike Yastrzemski, a defensive replacement. Snell threw 114 pitches and walked three. It was the 18th no-hitter in Giants history, and the 13th time Cincinnati has been no-hit. Last August, the Reds’ Spencer Steer broke up Alex Cobb’s no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning.
