The 2024 Latin Grammy Awards are here — and it's a milestone anniversary. This year the event celebrates 25 years of honoring the best of Latin music in Spanish and Portuguese. More than 700 artists were nominated across 58 categories this year, according to Manuel Abud, CEO of the Latin Recording Academy. Latin music icon Marc Anthony will also executive produce a special segment, with salsa great Sergio George, to pay homage to the tropical music genre. Puerto Rican artist Kany García performed during the pre-show and won best singer-songwriter song with "García."

Some of the biggest stars in Latin music will gather Thursday for the 25th anniversary of the Grammys in Miami — a hub of Latin American culture and the headquarters of the Latin Recording Academy. There are some new additions to this year’s Latin Grammys, too: best Latin electronic music performance and best contemporary Mexican music album will be featured as categories for the first time ever. “As we approach the 25th edition of the Latin GRAMMYs, our Awards Process is more robust than ever, with our membership evaluating over 23,000 entries this year,” Latin Recording Academy CEO Manuel Abud said. “The Latin GRAMMYs have grown in an amazing way to become a fundamental platform for music and culture. Carpenter and Roan are favored for nominations in the best new artist category. Two of the industry's most prolific artists — Taylor Swift and Beyoncé — are expected to snag nominations this year again. She also could be nominated in the best country album category after she was shut out of the Country Music Awards this year. Post Malone, who released his first country album this year, could also get nods in the country music categories. CNN —Iranian dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi had his death sentence overturned by the Iranian Supreme Court this week in what his lawyers have deemed a victory for human rights in Iran. After being briefly released from prison in 2023, Salehi was re-arrested for “making false claims and spreading lies,” according to Iranian judiciary news agency Mizan. On Saturday, his lawyer Amir Raesian broke the news of the reversal in a post on X, saying that the Iranian Supreme Court had “avoided irreparable judicial error” and overturned Salehi’s death sentence this week. The Supreme Court found that the death sentence delivered to Salehi was excessive and failed to comply with Iranian law,” the group said in a statement Saturday. London-based human rights lawyer Caoilfhionn Gallagher who is the international counsel for the Salehi family said it was “not enough” that his life had been “spared” by the Iranian authorities.

While some music critics praised Knowles' country tracks, other fans of the genre refrained from a warm welcome. Beyond just radio, Black artists and artists of color represented less than 4% of country songs played on the radio, airplay, charting songs, artists signed to major labels and award nominations, according to SongData. One such fan, Tenley Patterson, 26, said she didn't bother listening to country music before Beyoncé's releases, but was impressed with the country tracks. Rachel Whitney, head of editorial for the Nashville team, said playlists outside of the country genre are playing Knowles' country tracks, broadening its reach. The Beyoncé draw is also boosting exposure for other artists on some lists, like Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson, who have more "traditional" country songs, Whitney said.

There is no reason why Beyoncé's "Renaissance" should've lost album of the year. Her eighth album, the queer-pop masterpiece "Renaissance," was the obvious choice for album of the year in 2023. And to be clear, "Harry's House" is good, but it's no "Renaissance." Once again, Beyoncé was triumphant in genre-specific categories — best dance/pop album, best dance/electronic recording for "Break My Soul," best traditional R&B performance for "Plastic Off the Sofa," best R&B song for "Cuff It" — but not in the prestigious general-field races. In fact, out of her record-breaking 32 wins, only one has been in a general-field category: song of the year for "Single Ladies" in 2010.
