CNN —President-elect Donald Trump announced Jamieson Greer as his pick to serve as the next US trade representative. Greer is no stranger to the role, having served as chief of staff to the trade representative during Trump’s first term, Robert Lighthizer. Trump has routinely referenced the passage of the USMCA trade agreement – which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA – as a political victory and a highlight of his presidency. The threat of tariffs could also be used as a negotiation tactic, as Trump has pledged to renegotiate the USMCA. New York CNN —Yet another fast food CEO is stepping down. Subway announced Tuesday that its CEO, John Chidsey, will retire at the end of 2024. Chidsey, the first chief executive outside of the chain’s founding family, joined Subway as CEO in 2019. The chain’s store count is also shrinking, closing 400 restaurants in the US last year and finishing 2023 with the lowest store count since 2005. Incoming interim CEO Walsh is currently the company’s president of Europe, Middle East and Africa and also served as global chief marketing officer.

New York CNN —Kohl’s announced its CEO Tom Kingsbury will step down on January 15, 2025, and will be replaced by the CEO of arts and crafts retailer Michaels. Ashley Buchanan, the next Kohl’s CEO, has been CEO of Michaels since 2020 and was a senior executive at Walmart and Walmart-owned Sam’s Club for 13 years. He took over after former Kohl’s chief executive Michelle Gass announced she was leaving the company to become the CEO at Levi’s (LEVI). Kingsbury will stay on as an advisor to Buchanan and on the Kohl’s Board of Directors until he retires in May 2025. Shares of Kohl’s dropped 5% in after-hours trading Monday.

☆ Microsoft’s massive Outlook and Teams outage has gone on for hours

New York CNN —Microsoft said Monday that it has identified the cause of a major Outlook and Teams outage, and is deploying a fix to the problem. As of noon ET Monday, outage-tracking site Downdetector showed more than 5,000 user-reported problems, though this data doesn’t fully reflect the scale of the outage. Around noon, the company said the fix had reached “approximately 98% of the affected environments,” though reports on Downdetector kept increasing. The outage has hindered many office workers – though some US users on X celebrated the small break ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Tech outages have had dire effects around the world this year, though Microsoft’s case isn’t as widespread in comparison.

The proposed class-action lawsuit filed Monday claims Chipotle understated customer dissatisfaction regarding its “highly inconsistent” portion sizes in official disclosures. “First, there was never a directive to provide less to our customers,” Niccol said during the earnings call. Last week, KFC accused Church’s Texas Chicken of violating its trademark rights when its fried chicken competitor began using the words “Original Recipe” in its advertising and promotions. KFC claimed in a lawsuit that beginning September 30, it noticed Church’s “abruptly” began using the phrase and ignored KFC’s October 24 letter objecting to the ads. In the disputed promotions, Church’s posted photos of its fried chicken deals with text above reading: “our original recipe is back.”The phrase, which KFC has been using for over half a century, “is likely to create confusion in the marketplace and dilute the ORIGINAL RECIPE® Mark,” the lawsuit, which was filed in US District Court in Texas, said. But when it comes to fried chicken, KFC also has to compete with Church’s Texas Chicken, Popeyes, Raising Cane’s, Zaxby’s and more. More than 30 years ago, Edwards recorded four iconic lines for what was then a little-known company called America Online. His wife, Karen, worked at Quantum Computer Services, which eventually became AOL, Edwards said in an AOL YouTube video in 2012. She volunteered her husband, and Edwards recorded the phrases on a cassette deck in his living room. “I didn’t enjoy being on camera as much as I enjoyed being behind the scenes,” Edwards said on the podcast.

New York CNN —Sam’s Club has now entered the Thanksgiving meal deal wars. Sam’s Club on Thursday announced a Member’s Mark Thanksgiving meal, which feeds up to 10 people for under $100, made up of the warehouse club’s private label products. That follows Aldi, which released its lowest-priced Thanksgiving meal deal in five years, feeding 10 people for $47, or $4.70 per person. That is about $2 cheaper than a similar offer at Walmart, which owns Sam’s Club, which markets a meal to serve eight people for less than $7 per person. Unlike Aldi and Walmart’s turkey dinner, Sam’s Club is also offering to deliver the meal fully pre-cooked, ready to be heated up and served in under two hours.

New York CNN —The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Goldman Sachs and Apple to pay $89 million, and Goldman was temporarily banned from issuing new credit cards, because of the companies’ mishandling of their Apple Card partnership. Apple neglected to send tens of thousands of Apple Card disputes to Goldman Sachs, the CFPB said. The Apple Card issued by Goldman Sachs and running on the Mastercard network rolled out in August 2019. In April 2023, Apple announced it would be offering its Apple Card holders a 4.15% high-yield savings account with Goldman Sachs. They may park both the 3% cash back they receive from using the Apple Card on select purchases plus other savings they may wish to deposit.

Some users on Yelp blamed the McDonald’s franchise for allowing Trump to host a campaign event there. McDonald’s was thrust into the political spotlight Sunday when Trump served fries at a Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania, location, even though the chain attempted to distance itself from the stunt. Yelp will flag and temporarily disable reviews on businesses that have received increased public attention. On Sunday, McDonald’s said in an internal memo to employees obtained by CNN that it did not invite Trump.

New York CNN —Fans of Whole Foods’ iconic Berry Chantilly Cake have been up in arms on social media over the past few weeks. Berry Chantilly fans say they were victims of skimpflation, a member of the shrinkflation and inflation family. Whole Foods customers were quick to catch on, and by Friday, the company announced it had reversed its changes. “Based on feedback from our customers, we will reintroduce single slices of the Berry Chantilly Cake that are the same as the classic our customers know and love,” a Whole Foods spokesperson told CNN on Friday. The cake slices will be back to their previous version by next week, the company said.
