Samsung unveiled a slew of new products including foldable smartphones, new smartwatches and the Galaxy Ring. "I believe strongly that these Galaxy AI, mobile AI are strong motivation and driver for purchase of new products," he added. Still, many analysts don't expect these early AI apps alone to drive new phones sales. So we're going to provide and enhance Samsung software and apps for consumers," Roh said. He said that the hardware components required for foldable smartphones are improving, as is the relevant software.

PARIS — Samsung is developing its suite of artificial intelligence features known as Galaxy AI specifically for the Chinese market, the company's mobile chief told CNBC, as it looks to regain market share that has been decimated by local players. But China, the world's biggest smartphone market, has been a struggle for Samsung over the last few years. Foreign firms looking to launch AI features in China likely need to partner with local companies.

It’s debate week! She has a plan for Thursday’s presidential debate between President Biden and former President Donald Trump — and a plan B if things go south. “Bingo might turn into a drinking game instead if things go badly.”Last week, I asked you all how you were feeling about the first 2024 general election debate. But many of you, like Lowe and her friends, want Biden to do well but worry he will slip up. Some described real despair about the prospect of seeing Trump on a debate stage once more.

Chey Tae-won, billionaire and chairman of SK Group, prepares to leave after speaking during the Nikkei Forum Future of Asia in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday, May 23, 2024. Shares of SK Inc., one of South Korea's biggest conglomerates, surged as much as 16% on Thursday after a court reportedly ordered the company's chairman to pay $1 billion to his wife in a divorce lawsuit. Chey Tae-won was told by a Seoul court to pay 1.38 trillion Korean won to his estranged wife, Roh Soh-yeong. Prior local reports suggested Roh was seeking around 2 trillion won as part of a settlement and some of Chey's shares in SK Inc. The final settlement is lower, perhaps explaining the jump in SK Inc. shares, which eventually closed more than 9% higher in Seoul.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A former Philadelphia police officer has been sentenced to 15 to 40 years in state prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting women and girls — often while in uniform and in the back of his police vehicle. Patrick Heron, 54, entered the pleas Friday after reaching an agreement with prosecutors in advance of a trial on more than 200 counts that included child sex assault, child pornography, kidnapping and related offenses, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Jane Roh, spokesperson for the district attorney’s office, said victims who are now spared the trauma of a trial welcomed the guilty plea. Investigators said they later found photos and videos indicating predatory behavior spanning years and including dozens of often vulnerable young women and girls including those who had run away, been arrested or struggled with addiction. She said investigators have identified 48 victims, though many of their identities remain unknown, and more likely haven't come forward.

Seoul/Hong Kong CNN —When Hwang Ji-sun, 52, first joined the assembly line at South Korean carmaker Hyundai 22 years ago, women like her had it tough. A wider problemDespite the incremental improvements, South Korea still has widespread problems of gender-based exclusion and low pay, researchers say. Gita Gopinath, first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has proposed South Korea adopt new measures to help keep women in the workforce. Making childcare more affordable, lowering the number of working hours or allowing more flexible arrangements is key, she told a South Korean forum last September. In a culturally conservative society like South Korea, much more needs to be done to change perceptions about women in male-dominated professions, according to Hwang.

Industry experts say even a small increase in crime can have massive, cascading effects that cause retailers to close stores. And stolen items can have an outsized impact on store profitability, considering the razor thin profit margins many large retailers typically operate at. “Increasing store crime is another variable in play right now for retailers,” said Zak Stambor, senior retail & ecommerce analyst with Insider Intelligence. Organized retail crimeAt issue is a particular type of store theft that loss prevention experts classify as “organized retail crime” or ORC. Last month, Dick’s Sporting Goods warned that retail theft was damaging its business and would lead to lower annual profits.

Employee productivity and accuracy decreases during the afternoon, according to a recently published study in the science journal PLOS ONE. Unlike other studies which examine worker productivity, this one doesn't rely on self-evaluations or manager feedback. Instead, researchers tracked computer usage metrics like typing speed, mouse activity, and typing errors. Afternoons tended to be when most typing errors were made. And on Friday afternoons, specifically, there was a decrease in computer activity and increase in typos.

SEOUL, July 27 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics' (005930.KS) mobile chief said Samsung is "going in the right direction" in China, the world's largest mobile market, as it seeks to raise its lagging market share by boosting premium offerings and ties with local content firms. Third-party data shows the world's largest smartphone maker is making small gains in its single-digit market share in China, said TM Roh, head of mobile experience at Samsung Electronics. "We are making efforts to reach Chinese consumers with products that fit the China market, through software optimisation that fits the China market, and I think the results are coming out little by little," Roh told reporters this week. But by March, Samsung had recovered a 1.1% market share, according to Counterpoint data. Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker, announces full second-quarter earnings later on Thursday.

The world's largest memory chip and smartphone maker estimated its operating profit fell to 600 billion won ($459 million) in April-June, from 14.1 trillion won a year earlier in a short preliminary earnings statement. It would be Samsung's lowest profit for any quarter since a 590 billion won profit in the first quarter of 2009, according to company data. Shares in Samsung fell 1.4% in early morning trade, underperforming a 0.6% drop in the wider market (.KS11). In the January-March quarter, the company reported a whopping 4.58 trillion won loss in its chip business as memory chip prices fell further and its inventory values were slashed. Revenue in April to June likely fell 22% from the same period a year earlier to 60 trillion won, Samsung said in the statement.

SEOUL, June 30 (Reuters) - A South Korean chip executive imprisoned over industrial espionage charges rejected allegations he had sought to build a copycat chip factory in China with sensitive information developed by Samsung Electronics. Choi is in custody at a detention centre in Suwon, a city south of Seoul where Samsung has its headquarters. Neither Foxconn or companies contracted build the Samsung plant were accused of any wrongdoing. A NAND flash chip is a storage chip that retains data even when a device is turned off, unlike a DRAM chip which loses data when the power is off. "What we were planning to build was a R&D fab and there is no R&D fab at (Samsung's) Xian plant.

SEOUL, Feb 8 (Reuters) - South Korean lawmakers voted on Wednesday to impeach the interior minister over his responses to a deadly Halloween crush, setting the stage for him to become the first cabinet member ousted by the legislature. The Democrats and other opposition parties had pushed for expulsion of the interior minister, Lee Sang-min, urging him to take responsibility for botched responses to the crush. A presidential official said there was no evidence that the minister had severely violated the constitution or any law. In 2017, President Park Geun-hye became South Korea's first elected leader to be expelled from office when the Constitutional Court upheld her impeachment. The court dismissed an impeachment motion in 2004 for President Roh Moo-hyun.
"Samsung, in a roundabout way, is saying production will decrease slightly," said analyst Kim Yang-jae at Daol Investment and Securities. CHIP PROFIT TUMBLESEarlier on Tuesday, Samsung reported its lowest quarterly profit since 2014 and said persistent macroeconomic uncertainty will make for a tough first half of this year, though it expects demand to start recovering in the second half. At 4.3 trillion won ($3.49 billion), October-December operating profit was Samsung's lowest quarterly profit in eight years. Some analysts expect the chip business to book a loss in the first quarter, pulling overall profit below that of the fourth. In mobile, Samsung said fourth-quarter profit fell to 1.7 trillion won from 2.66 trillion won a year earlier, as a decline in low- and mid-end smartphone sales was greater than expected.
SEOUL, Dec 26 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) plans to increase chip production capacity at its largest semiconductor plant next year, despite forecasts of an economic slowdown, a South Korean newspaper reported late on Sunday. Samsung plans to expand its P3 factory in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, by adding 12-inch wafers capacity for DRAM memory chips, the Seoul Economic Daily reported, citing unnamed industry sources. It will also expand the plant with additional 4-nanometre chip capacity, which will be made under foundry contracts - that is, according to clients' designs - the paper said. P3, which started production of cutting-edge NAND flash memory chips this year, is the company's largest chip manufacturing facility. In October it said it was not considering intentionally cutting chip production, defying the broader industry's tendency to scale back output to meet mid- to long-term demand.
SEOUL, Dec 6 (Reuters) - A South Korean court ordered the chairman of No. 2 conglomerate SK Group to transfer 66.5 billion won ($50.68 million) in a division of property, as part of a divorce ruling on Tuesday. It was not immediately clear if the transfer by Chairman Chey Tae-won would include stock in the group's holding company, SK Inc (034730.KS). Kim Hyeon-jung, a judge of the Seoul Family Court, said the estranged wife, Roh Soh-yeong, would also receive alimony of 100 million won. Chey holds 17.5% of SK Inc, the company's regulatory filings show, with a value of 2.7 trillion won at Monday's closing price.
NBC News spoke with South Korean lawmakers, human rights organizations and dozens of LGBTQ South Koreans in three of the country’s largest cities: Seoul, Daegu and Busan. Most say a bill that would outlaw discrimination against all minority groups — including the LGBTQ community — is the critical first step toward legal equality. The documentary filmmaker turned progressive lawmaker calls herself an advocate for this country’s LGBTQ community. This, he added, “includes South Korea.”While support for a comprehensive nondiscrimination bill is strong in South Korea, Jang concedes that the odds of one passing, at least in the near future, are slim. The country’s conservative president and People Power Party oppose a comprehensive nondiscrimination bill, while the left-leaning Democratic Party has expressed lukewarm support.
