Regional bank stocks are having an underwhelming year, but investors who are on the hunt for good dividend payers might find a few gems, according to Piper Sandler. "Given the recent pullback in bank stock prices, we are finding lots of regional and community bank stocks that have eye-catching dividend yields," wrote Mark Fitzgibbon, managing director at Piper Sandler, in a Thursday report. There is more to picking solid dividend stocks than just going by the yield. Piper Sandler further whittled down the list by eliminating companies that had cut their dividends over the past decade. Piper Sandler called out Heritage Commerce of San Jose, California, as a bank worth snapping up.

Investors should look for companies in the third quarter that are on solid ground, both in their fundamental business and their stock price, according to Piper Sandler. The firm's yardsticks for quality fundamentals include free cash flow yield and positive earnings revisions. Piper Sandler's macro select model includes some of the big tech companies that have outperformed in recent years, in part due to their combination of solid balance sheets and strong growth. Two other stocks on the list with momentum are Chipotle Mexican Grill and Wingstop , up roughly 37% and 66%, respectively, in 2024. The company said in its first-quarter report that cash was up and debt was down compared with the same period a year ago.

Actively managed exchange-traded funds are having their time in the limelight as ETF managers seek new strategies beyond passive funds. "But with active management, you can differentiate assuming the active manager is actually doing something meaningfully different than the underlying benchmark," he added. While active ETFs have been around since 2008, the popularity took off in 2019 after the SEC eased launch restrictions. So far this year, the number of active ETFs that have launched have already overtaken passive ETFs by a ratio of three to one, according to Morningstar. While it's the firm's first active ETF, GMO has run a traditional actively managed mutual fund called the GMO Quality Fund (GQETX) since 2004.

The six largest stocks in the BNY Mellon Dynamic Value Fund were in one of two sectors, as of September 30: financials and healthcare.

Volatility has made a comeback, and that's typically when hedge funds outperform and offer downside protection. When it comes to picking stocks, Hannah Gooch-Peters of asset management firm Sanlam Investments UK avoids chasing trends. She said she believes investors need to look beyond the "Magnificent Seven," referring to Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla — tech stocks that have made massive gains this year. Sanlam's $5 billion-plus Global High Quality Fund invests in global stocks with a "high quality bias." The companies her firm picks have rather low capital expenditure as a percentage of their sales, she said. It also has a "mortgage-signing technology service which is "really, really exciting," she said.

South Korean giant Samsung Electronics has an edge over other semiconductor companies, according to Hannah Gooch-Peters of asset management firm Sanlam Investments UK. Semiconductor firms have "to massively invest," Gooch-Peters said. Samsung produces dynamic random access memory chips and NAND chips. And you know … if you've got generative AI you need these memory chips to be able to use it," she added. It also has its very stable smartphone business, Gooch-Peters said.

Club name and Dow stock Caterpillar (CAT) was one of the leaders, soaring more than 8% and accounting for over 100 points of the 30-stock average's 700-point surge. Meanwhile, the tech darlings that have recently propelled the market higher — including top-performing Club stocks Nvidia (NVDA) and Meta Platforms (META) — took a relative backseat Friday. For that reason, it's a hopeful sign to see other sectors walk the runway in the Wall Street fashion show Friday. Amid rolling banking stress and ongoing inflation and recession concerns, the flight to high-quality funds has become more appealing for exchange-traded fund investors. "Our clients are really worried about what they see in the marketplace -- high interest rates, high inflation," Paglia said. "So, it's not a coincidence that you see high quality and low volatility being in the driver's seat." While Ladner explained the benefits of junk-seeking strategies, he affirmed that quality is still the standout factor in a slow-growth market environment. "That behavioral modification aspect to investing in a quality portfolio in a time of economic uncertainty can be just as powerful as the economic implications of doing that."
Disinflation — not inflation — will be a key driving force in the economy this year, according to Jefferies. Therefore, investors can find winners this year by looking at the stocks with a positive correlation to inflation cooling down. Jefferies looked at changes in inflation expectations and which equities had the highest correlation to those changes. So Jefferies reasons that these stocks will have the most to gain this year as disinflation takes over. Jefferies gave clients a list of names it believes are quality stocks trading at reasonable prices.
Shares of the London Stock Exchange Group are trading at a "very good" entry point for investors after a 10% decline in the bourse's stock over the past month, according to a fund strategist. Hannah Gooch-Peters, global equity investment analyst at Sanlam Investments, said the U.K.'s premier stock exchange had performed well in the past year due to the volatility in the fixed-income markets and the high spot prices of commodities. LSEG-GB 5Y line The share price of the London Stock Exchange Group has risen by 101% between Jan 2018 and Jan 2023. The London Stock Exchange Group, which goes by the ticker LSEG, is the fifth largest holding at 4.1% of Gooch-Peters' $480 million fund. However, the consensus price target of analysts compiled by FactSet shows a 24% upside from the current share price.
BNY Mellon mutual fund managers John Bailer and Brian Ferguson belong in the second camp. Over time they started to collaborate more closely thanks to their shared approach to value stocks. In time, the two began working together on coverage of large cap value stocks as well. Bailer has run the Income Stock Fund since the end of 2011. The Income Stock Fund has one additional criterion: the fund prioritizes dividends that are at least 50% greater than the yield of the average S&P 500 company.
John Bailer and Brian Ferguson don't chase growth stocks. And that's an approach that's helped their five- and four-star-rated mutual funds beat this year's market rout. "What I'm talking about is a focus back on fundamentals in the market," said Bailer, a portfolio manager at Newton Investment Management, a subsidiary of BNY Mellon. In nearly two decades, the managers delivered roughly 300 basis points in alpha to investors, Bailer said. "With these high oil prices, good refining margins, they've been able to build a lot of cash," Bailer said.
Today, though, I'm homing in on another front in the global markets story — specifically, Russia. Official customs data showed China spent a record-breaking $8.3 billion importing Russian oil products, gas, and coal in August. "What happens is that [isolationism] reduces the number of products that [Russia] can buy," Jay Zagorsky, a markets professor at Boston University, told Insider. They told Insider the exact books that got them started on the path to building wealth — see their list of four reads here. That's according to Bank of America analysts, who wrote Monday that global markets will remain strained heading into next year thanks to a variety of factors.
Goldman Sachs's US Economics team is anticipating three rate hikes this year, ending at a 4% rate. It's looking like interest rate hikes aren't going away anytime soon even as financial conditions keep tightening. Goldman Sachs' US economics team is anticipating three more rate hikes this year, according to a September 9 equity strategy note, with the next one coming in hot on September 21 at 75 basis points. The note adds that increasing nominal treasury yields, widening credit spreads, a strengthening US dollar, and compressed equity valuations add to the evidence that financial conditions are tightening. Since tightening financial conditions are a key source of macro uncertainty, the investment bank predicts that these stocks should generate attractive risk-adjusted returns.
