To the Editor:Re “Enough,” by Roxane Gay (Opinion, Nov. 17):I empathize with Ms. Gay’s feelings regarding not yielding “even a little” to Trumpism’s “odious politics.” But we also cannot be naïve about what’s necessary to most effectively fight and defeat Trumpism: political power. To win future elections Democrats — increasingly the party of well-educated, well-off citizens who have the privilege of voting based on concerns over the rule of law and cultural issues, not whether they can pay this month’s rent — do not need to cater to all who voted for Donald Trump. They just need to win over a small slice of the electorate that may have voted for previous Democratic candidates but, perhaps holding their noses, didn’t in 2024. They must acknowledge many voters’ fear, anger and insecurity over both major parties failing for decades to adequately address ever-increasing income and wealth inequality — that even when “the economy” improves, too often everyday workers still fall farther and farther behind. And they must relentlessly focus electoral messaging on their plans for how to repair this ever-worsening economic gulf.

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered prosecutors to get rid of copies of 19 pages of notes taken from Sean "Diddy" Combs' jail cell after his lawyers argued the seizure violated attorney-client privilege. Judge Arun Subramanian ruled Tuesday that the court will keep the papers while prosecutors and Combs’ lawyers submit briefs on the issue over the next few weeks. CNN —“Impoundment” is another word that Americans may need to learn in the vernacular of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. Trump took the time to record a video about impoundment during the Republican primary season, and he promised seizing control over spending from Congress would be a top priority if he was elected. Impoundment occurs when Congress appropriates money that the president then declines to spend. As a result of these standoffs, Congress passed a law to curtail a president’s use of impoundment, particularly for policy reasons. A malnourished emperor penguin that was found more than 2,000 miles from its icy Antarctic home is being been taken care of by a wildlife expert, the Australian government said Monday. The penguin was found on a popular tourist beach in the town of Denmark in southwestern Australia on Nov. 1, according to the Western Australia state’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Following protests in September about the city’s housing market, thousands of people living in the Portuguese capital have signed a petition demanding a clampdown on Lisbon vacation rentals. The group behind the petition, the Referendum Movement for Housing (MRH), is seeking to eradicate the almost 20,000 short term vacation rentals in Lisbon residential blocks, hoping to free up housing opportunities for locals. CNN Travel has reached out to Airbnb for comment about the Lisbon referendum petition. Changing the Lisbon tourist industryFreitas stresses a successful referendum wouldn’t eliminate Lisbon tourist lets altogether, but prevent them from “existing in houses registered for residential use.” Landlords would also be prohibited from establishing new vacation rentals in residential buildings in the future.
