In the emerging AI software battle between Microsoft and Salesforce , investors do not need to pick a side. The announcements came roughly one year after the tech giant launched a suite of AI assistant tools called Microsoft 365 Copilot. Both companies leaning into AI agents is notable because Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has not been hesitant to attack Microsoft's competing AI offerings. Salesforce stock is up 28% year to date versus Microsoft's roughly 9% gain since the start of 2024. I don't want to go against Microsoft," Jim said.

The S & P 500 has now seen seven consecutive weeks of inflows, keeping the post-election momentum intact. I want to use the S & P 500 SPDR Trust ETF (SPY) to hedge these gains and bet against the consensus of markets finishing the year on a high note. SPY YTD mountain SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust, YTD Investors have rejoiced with expectations for a more business-friendly economy ahead following President Elect Donald Trump's victory in early November. Some major tech companies including Meta are taking steps to combat “pig butchering” scams, which trick Americans out of billions of dollars each year through fake online friendships and romances. Pig butchering scams are elaborate and often take months to unfold. Meta on Thursday announced it has taken its first major steps into addressing the scams, including dedicating staff to identify where scammers operate, sharing that information with international law enforcement, and taking down more than 2 million accounts this year. The announcement reflects how more tech companies are recognizing the severity of pig butchering scams. Calling themselves the Tech Against Scams coalition, the companies pledged to share scammer information with each other and better educate users.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Thursday issued a finalized version of a rule saying it will soon supervise nonbank firms that offer financial services likes payments and wallet apps. That would include payments services from Apple, Google and Amazon, as well as fintech firms including PayPal and Block and peer-to-peer services Venmo and Zelle. While the CFPB already had some authority over digital payment companies because of its oversight of electronic fund transfers, the new rule allows it to treat tech companies more like banks. “Digital payments have gone from novelty to necessity and our oversight must reflect this reality,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra. The CFPB said the rule will take effect 30 days after its publication in the Federal Register.

Stop & Shop spokesperson Caroline Medeiros said that despite the limited number of products, Stop & Shop stores and pharmacies are still open and operating as the chain works to restock its shelves and anticipate item availability. “At my personal Stop & Shop, I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of chicken, ground turkey. A user showed pictures on a Facebook from a Stop & Shop in Pittsfield, Massachusetts with rows of empty shelves and wrote “Avoid Stop and Shop… their shelves are empty.” A user on TikTok posted a video with over 40 thousand views of the empty shelves in a Stop & Shop in South Boston. Many in the comments of both posts said they had been confronted with similar scenes at other Stop & Shop locations. “Stop & Shop is well stocked with turkeys and hams for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, along with staples like potatoes, gravy, and stuffing,” she said.

SYDNEY, Australia — Australia’s center-left government on Thursday introduced a bill in Parliament that aims to ban social media for children under 16 and proposed fines of up to $32 million for social media platforms for systemic breaches. Australia plans to trial an age-verification system that may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off, some of the toughest controls imposed by any country to date. France last year proposed a ban on social media for those under 15, but users were able to avoid the ban with parental consent. The law would force social media platforms, and not parents or young people, to take reasonable steps to ensure the age-verification protections are in place. “Social media has a social responsibility ... that’s why we are making big changes to hold platforms to account for user safety,” she said.

The Justice Department on Wednesday asked the judge in its antitrust case against Google to force the company to sell its Chrome browser. "Advertisers would find competitors for their business, rather than needing to pay a dominant search engine." When you open Chrome and type something into the search bar at the top, these words are automatically transformed into a Google Search. And when there's an option for users, Google pays partners billions of dollars to set its search engine as the default. For instance, if most people click on the third result, Google's Search engine will likely adjust and rank that result higher in the future.

California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed California's bill at the end of September but signed into law another bill which requires transparency in generative AI systems. "A lot of the privacy risks associated with AI can be tackled through a comprehensive data privacy regime," she said. The U.S. has historically approached data privacy with decentralized, state-by-state legislation, which is where AI regulation is currently headed. Regarding Colorado's successful AI bill, Maroney wrote on Facebook, "It is unfortunate that Connecticut chose not to join Colorado as a leader in this space. Even a model approach, if done wrong, could pose a major risk to the U.S. "Everybody's looking at California, especially when it comes to tech," Elgendy said.

While the S & P 500 and Nasdaq 100 have both pushed to new all-time highs in November, market breadth indicators have mostly not confirmed those recent highs. Market breadth indicators like these are equal-weighted, meaning they simply count the number of stocks fulfilling a certain requirement. The change in that indicator over the last six weeks tells us that about 20% of the S & P 500 members have registered a sell signal on their point & figure charts! This chart shows the percent of stocks above their 200-day moving average, as well as the percent of stocks above their 50-day moving average as we quoted above. The S & P 500 continues to make higher lows, but a push below 5,850 would break that pattern which has been in place since August.
