CNN —A powerful “bomb cyclone” will combine with an atmospheric river to unleash over a month’s worth of rain, hurricane-force wind gusts and feet of mountain snow to parts of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. This bomb cyclone will work with an atmospheric river, a long plume of water vapor moving like a river through the atmosphere, to wring out heavy rainfall and significant mountain snowfall in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California beginning Tuesday. The pair will stall along the coast and hammer the area with hazardous conditions through the week and into the weekend. Rainfall of this magnitude is expected to cause significant urban flooding, debris flow on roadways and river flooding. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service office in Seattle warned.

But in 2024, in an election cycle as divisive as ever, these same companies and many more have been less active in encouraging voting. Gary Allen Montelongo won $10,000 for a science project on train derailment. Montelongo built and coded an experiment on railroad suspension, then won a national competition. AdvertisementThe internship ended, but Montelongo couldn't get the derailment off his mind, so he went down to the train tracks near his house. Then he built three sets of model railroad tracks out of foam and fitted them with three different types of springs: fresh new springs, midlife springs, and old, worn-out springs. This mimicked the different suspension systems he'd seen at the train tracks near his home.

It identified the deaths of at least 973 Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children who attended the boarding schools. During his remarks, Biden acknowledged that "the real number is likely to be much, much higher." “The federal Indian boarding school policy, the pain it has caused, will always be a significant mark of shame, a blot on American history,” Biden said. “Many Indian children suffered physical, sexual, and emotional abuse at these institutions,” the report found. It took less than five seconds for the building in southern Beirut to be reduced to rubble. Videos circulating on social media and verified by NBC News, showed several men watching the strike on Lebanon's capital from a distance, standing by their cars as the building crumples. In another video, one man can be seen running from the strike as a colossal bang rings out. “They targeted two buildings, not one,” a man can be heard shouting in the third video. Two explosions can be heard in several of the videos, although it unclear where the second blast came from.

CNN —A European spacecraft and two shoebox-size satellites are about to launch to survey the aftermath from NASA’s DART mission, which intentionally slammed into an asteroid named Dimorphos and altered its orbit two years ago. The European Space Agency’s Hera mission is expected to lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 10:52 a.m. The spacecraft and its two CubeSat companions are slated to arrive at the asteroid Dimorphos, and the larger asteroid it orbits named Didymos, in late 2026. NASA planned the DART, or Double Asteroid Redirection Test, mission to carry out a full-scale assessment of asteroid deflection technology on behalf of planetary defense. But many questions remain, including whether the DART spacecraft merely left behind a crater or if its momentum completely reshaped Dimorphos.

Northern bald ibis: Back from the brink

Editor’s Note: Call to Earth is a CNN editorial series committed to reporting on the environmental challenges facing our planet, together with the solutions. Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues and to inspire positive action. After the northern bald ibis disappeared from Europe more than 300 years ago, some assumed that 16th century drawings of its gleaming plume and long, arching beak were works of the imagination. Today, tenacious conservation efforts in Morocco have increased the population to more than 500 individuals, resulting in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species changing its status from critically endangered to endangered in 2018. In addition, thanks to a first-of-its-kind reintroduction program, the ibises are back migrating in Europe for the first time since the 1600s, with a managed migratory population of around 270 birds.

Israel’s killing of Hezbollah’s longtime leader has driven home how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set the agenda in the Middle East in recent months, with a frustrated Biden White House unable to shape events or defuse a spreading conflict in the region. Officials in the Biden administration felt blindsided by the Israeli air strikes Friday in southern Beirut that killed Hassan Nasrallah, and other senior Hezbollah figures, current and former officials say. Follow live updates hereThe Biden administration was so confident in the proposal's success that a senior administration official briefing reporters after its public debut suggested both parties' agreement was a foregone conclusion. American and European officials believed they were moving closer to a possible deal, but then came the television images of a massive plume of smoke rising over southern Beirut. President Joe Biden, Pentagon senior leaders and other senior officials across the administration were infuriated by the timing of the Israeli government operation, U.S. officials said.

Above the small city of Vinhedo, Brazil, on Friday, a passenger plane was falling from the sky. Residents began filming. Those videos show the horrifying moment when an 89-foot-long plane, carrying 61 people and slowly spinning in circles, plummeted to earth.
