CNN —Air Canada said early on Sunday it had reached a tentative agreement with its pilots union over a new four-year collective agreement, in a last-minute deal that will avert a near-term strike or lockout. Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which operate nearly 670 flights per day carrying about 110,000 daily passengers as well as freight, will now continue flying as normal, the airline said. Air Canada said in a statement the terms of its new agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) representing more than 5,200 pilots will remain confidential, pending a ratification vote by its members expected to be completed over the next month. “After several consecutive weeks of intense round-the-clock negotiations, progress was made on several key issues including compensation, retirement, and work rules,” said First Officer Charlene Hudy, chair of the Air Canada ALPA master executive council. As a result, some United pilots now earn 92% more than their counterparts at Air Canada, the pilots’ association’s data shows.

The pilots of a FedEx cargo plane couldn’t see the runway or the airfield at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. On Thursday, another near-miss was added to the list when an Alaska Airlines plane and a Southwest plane nearly collided in Nashville. In some cases, hero pilots such as Bradeen and Carvajal have kept collision courses from turning deadly. But about three miles out from landing, they grew uneasy when an air traffic controller cleared the Southwest flight to take off in front of them. The pilots’ awareness was heightened, but Bradeen said he didn’t realize a collision was imminent until about 100 or 150 feet away.

Rather than sparking typical cheer on Wall Street, Elliott's campaign, spelled out in a 50-page presentation, led to confusion and concern among investors and customers. Several activism experts pointed to two of Elliott's past targets for insight into the hedge fund's strategy for Southwest: Suncor Energy in 2022 and Marathon Petroleum in 2019. Elliott partner John Pike, who is now leading the Southwest campaign, was involved in the firm's actions at both energy companies. Pike and portfolio manager Bobby Xu are leading Elliott's Southwest campaign. But in 2018, a few months after reaching an agreement with Elliott, Marathon announced it was only getting bigger.

New York CNN —A federal investigation is underway after a Southwest Airlines flight plunged toward the ocean off the coast of a Hawaiian island. The incident occurred April 11 aboard Southwest Flight 2786, but only came to light publicly on Friday after Bloomberg reported Southwest sent a memo to pilots about the incident. Flight tracking data from ADS-B Exchange shows the plane dropping at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute while only 600 feet above sea level. The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association has not commented. The flight was an inter-island hop from the main Honolulu airport to Lihue airport on the neighboring island of Kauai.

Read previewAirport security officers have concerns over the special crew-member lanes that enable flight attendants and airline pilots to bypass typical passenger screening procedures. However, former and current TSA agents told Business Insider the lanes were "terrible" and that cabin crews could be "a bigger flight risk than the passengers themselves." 'KCM should be eliminated'TSA agents told BI these stories of cabin-crew wrongdoing "completely breach the trust that we put in them." "Transportation Security Officers conduct security screening for prohibited items at airport checkpoints and checked baggage screening," a TSA spokesperson told BI. However, Harmon-Marshall said airlines should do a better job of educating their crews about the dangers of the program, particularly when a flight crew is walking around in their uniforms.

CNN —The union representing pilots at American Airlines says it is seeing a “significant spike” in safety issues on flights. There were roughly a dozen incidents on United Airlines flights last month alone, according to a CNN analysis, which prompted CEO Scott Kirby to send a safety message to customers. “While United Airlines is currently under public and government scrutiny, it could just as easily be American Airlines,” said the message from the union’s safety committee, urging members to report problems and to resist being rushed or intimidated. “As the last link in the safety chain, our passengers and crew depend on us to be the strongest link in that chain,” the message said. American Airlines insisted in a statement that safety is its top priority, saying that “our robust safety program is guided by our industry-leading safety management system.”“It includes a multitude of collaborative programs — and regular touchpoints — with the FAA and all our unions, including APA, to further bolster our strong safety record and enhance our ever-evolving safety culture,” the company added.

CNN —The US aviation industry has asked the Biden administration to pause approval of additional flights to and from China, saying Beijing’s “existing harmful anti-competitive policies” hurt American airlines and workers. The letter was signed by industry lobby group Airlines for America — whose members include American Airlines (AAL), Delta (DAL) and United (UAL) — and other unions representing aviation workers, including the Air Line Pilots Association. Chinese carriers were given approval by US officials to make 50 weekly round trips to and from the United States, up from 35, from March 31. “These actions demonstrated the clear need for the US government to establish a policy that protects US aviation workers, industry and air travelers,” it said. “It [boosting flights] will help the two peoples strengthen exchanges and enhance mutual understanding,” the ministry added.

Spirit Airlines said Monday that it will defer deliveries of new Airbus planes and that it plans to furlough about 260 pilots as it tries to boost liquidity. Spirit said it will defer all Airbus planes it has on order that were scheduled to be delivered from the second quarter of 2025 through the end of 2026. The budget airline said the deferrals would boost its liquidity by about $340 million over the next two years. United Airlines pilots' union last month said the company is offering unpaid time off for pilots next month because of late-arriving planes from Boeing . The Air Line Pilots Association, Spirit pilots' union, said Monday it is exploring voluntary measures that could limit the number of pilot furloughs.

United Airlines is asking pilots to take unpaid time off next month, citing late-arriving aircraft from Boeing , according to a note sent to pilots. It's another example of how Boeing's customers say the manufacturer's production problems and safety crisis are impacting their growth plans. The offer comes after United and other airlines in recent years have clamored for more pilots when the Covid-19 pandemic travel slump ended and demand surged. "Due to recent changes to our Boeing deliveries, the remaining 2024 forecast block hours for United have been significantly reduced," the United chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, the pilots' union, said in a note to members Friday. United was contracted to receive 43 Boeing 737 Max 8 planes and 34 Max 9 models this year, but now expects to receive 37 and 19, respectively, according to a company filing in February.

United Parcel Service will become the United States Postal Service's (USPS) primary air cargo provider, the company said on Monday, as rival FedEx announced an end to its more than 20-year partnership with the postal service provider. USPS was the largest customer for FedEx's air-based Express segment, even as payments declined after the postal service shifted letters and packages from planes to more economical trucks. 1 USPS domestic air contractor, FedEx had supported the agency's Priority Mail and other quick services. "The parties were unable to reach agreement on mutually beneficial terms to extend the contract," FedEx said in a securities filing on Monday. A fight is brewing in Washington over whether the mandatory retirement age for airline pilots should be raised from 65. The debate comes as baby boomers more broadly are reaching "peak 65" — the biggest number of Americans reaching that age in history. Age 65 has traditionally been thought of as retirement age. In France last year, pension reforms that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64 sparked fierce protests. In the U.S., the Senate is expected to mark up a Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill that will consider the pilots' retirement age.
